FORMER city leader Donald Anderson today said Sir Sean Connery was sending "mixed messages" about his views on Edinburgh's architecture.
Mr Anderson said he did not agree with the screen legend's opinion that few people at the council appreciated the city's international reputation within the cinema industry.

The former Labour leader did say, however, that he supported the stalled
plans for a new film centre in Festival Square, and thinks it should named in honour of the actor.

Mr Anderson led the city council for eight years, and much of the criticism raised by Sir Sean in his new autobiography stems from decisions made during this period in Edinburgh's history.

In the book, the 77-year-old praises the "imaginative" work of Edinburgh architects Allan Murray, Malcolm Fraser and Richard Murphy, but deplores the general standard of new buildings springing up across the city.

Mr Anderson said: "When you come back to Edinburgh, you will see big changes.

"(But] in terms of architecture, he says he is a fan of Allan Murray, and Allan Murray has done a lot of the architecture, so I think there's a mixed message."

Plans for the Festival Square film centre were unveiled by architect Richard Murphy three years ago, but no planning application ever reached the council.

Mr Anderson said: "I remember when the plans were explained to me and my first reaction was to think it wouldn't be possible to get through the planning hurdles. However, Richard invited me down to see the model, and it did move my opinion.

"There's no question that we need a new Filmhouse and the council needs to play a central part in that.

"Sir Sean Connery is the most famous Scotsman and there should be a permanent marker (to him] in the city."

'ex-leader Anderson' - that's got a nice ring to it, to paraphrase Donald Dewar. This shamelessly irrepressible self-publicist (and failed MSP wannabe) has clearly never heard the other saying that 'there's nothing quite as 'EX' as an ex-leader' - agree with #2 - who cares what Donald thinks about anything.

3 - Well, Donald and his pal Mr Rodent, with whom he has been known to have coffee, and maybe even the sharing of the back of a broon envelope to jot down a few notes for a fill the space article... (or the odd Press Release....) ... apart from those two... anyone?

Who is Donald Anderson to be asked for his opinion on this. Does he live in the City Centre? Has he an agenda?

Former leader nets top PR job http://www.ppsgroup.info/Network.aspx?page=4

"FORMER city council leader Donald Anderson has landed a top job with Mountgrange's public relations firm. He is to be the new Scottish director of PPS, one of the UK's biggest lobbying and PR companies, which is also promoting plans for a hugely-controversial giant waste depot in Portobello.."

Another of The Rodent's unsatisfactory articles. Where did he do his journalism apprenticeship??

It's not journalism as we know it, of course. He calls up his mates (or his mates who work for PR firms call him...) when he has space to fill, that's when he hasn't a press release from his mates to pass off as an article.

It's a hard life, being a hack for the EEN. Now that The Donald isn't at the cooncil any longer and can't leak 'stories', it must be hell

Donald Anderson - failed policies, failed City Centre development, failed politician - the electorate certainly saw through him. His views are irrelevant, his past connections are not, particularly over Caltongate et al.
High time an investigative journalist had a look at him.

Summaries from the World Heritage Committee:

Old and New Towns of Edinburgh

Expresses its concern at the potential impact of the Caltongate development
Requests the State Party to invite a World Heritage Centre/ICOMOS joint reactive monitoring mission to the property to consider the overall state of conservation of the Old and New Towns and particularly the possible impact of the Caltongate development on the integrity and Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage property, as well as the outline proposals for Leith Docks, the St James Centre, and other current proposals

If Connery lived, worked from and payed taxes here his views would carry a little more weight.

Is he still advertising (Japanese) Whiskey!!

grey fatique,

Its not a mixed message, get your act together edi 22/08/2008 20:06:02
The only mixed message is from the complete mess over the last 50 years of rubbish architecture. We want progress but lets build something of significance and pleasing to the eye not another clone town, this is our capital. We are not the most stylish nation maybe we have no taste and like the bland. We have a beautiful countryside but we build in general, ugly soulless urban areas. If Edinburgh did not have the historic centre it would a fairly ugly city. The fact that UNESCO have intervened is a clear indication of the mediocrity of appalling architecture, designs, materials and workmanship. The Sheraton Hotel off Lothain road is a prime example in a prime location as is the Leith docks. The only suggestion is for people of Edinburgh get out onto the streets and protest.
Come on Mr Salmond do something about our town planning and build by better design for the people of Scotland, just copy the Scandinavia's policies.
I live in a new build in Western harbour, the quality is rubbish, room sizes to small, not enough room to sit and eat, forget asking friends around, prison bars on windows, poor energy efficiency, paper thin walls and grey paint everywhere, poor workmanship and a transient population trashing the place. Would I buy here, no.
I would say Sir Connery you are spot of with your comments about the modern Edinburgh and assume will be the same for other cities and towns too.
