MOTORISTS are set for even more roadworks misery when a £1.7 million project to revamp one of the city's busiest roundabouts gets under way.
Work to replace the roundabout which links Seafield Road, Portobello Road and King's Road with traffic lights is expected to begin in May.

The 20-week project will take place at the same time as motorists face diversions and road closures in Leit
h and the West End as part of the tram project.

Last year, a similar project to replace the Milton Link roundabout with traffic lights caused delays of more than 30 minutes on journeys for commuters.

Today, transport chiefs insisted the disruption would be worthwhile as the new junction would be safer and help cut congestion.

As part of the revamp, new pedestrian crossings and traffic islands will be built, including one on Portobello High Street.

Bus lanes will be put in on the approaches to the new junction, and a new priority system will allow buses to bypass queues during busy periods.

Portobello councillor Maureen Child, said: "Long-term, this is a good move. I think the Milton Link has been proven to work well and I know Lothian Buses are delighted with the improvements in bus times.

"There is no getting away from the fact this will cause a huge amount of disruption given how much traffic passes through Seafield roundabout.

"However, I think the council has learned a lot of lessons from the experiences of building the new Milton Link and hopefully they will make this as pain-free as possible."

Statistics released by the council shows there have been 18 accidents causing injury at the Seafield roundabout over the last four years, involving 20 casualties.

Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport leader, said: "Research has shown that traffic-signal controlled junctions have a better safety record than roundabouts where pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable.

"This project should help in the council's commitment to tackling congestion and improving the flow of traffic.

"Also, the fact that buses will be given priority during peak times will encourage more people to use this excellent method of public transport."

The project's £1.7m price tag is £300,000 more than was first envisaged for the work.

The Milton Link roundabout was last year replaced with sets of traffic lights and bus lanes were set up in both directions along Milton Road, as well as a "traffic management system" giving priority to inbound drivers in the morning and outbound drivers in the evening.

Around 24,000 vehicles a day use the junction and the construction period resulted in major delays across the east of the city.

Iain Coupar, marketing director for Lothian Buses, said: "Bus priority measures in Edinburgh have always been successful.

"They definitely encourage more people to travel by public transport, so we welcome the fact that the council are looking to introduce more, which is good news for bus passengers and bus operators."

So they'll put more than three men on the job and work weekends then...... won't they?

"transport chiefs insisted the disruption would be worthwhile as the new junction would be safer and help cut congestion" oh dear, this statement can only be described as a load of spherical objects - the real reason for yet more disregard for the public who daily enter the city using their own transport and contribute to its economy and have little option due to the inadequacies of public transport is "a new priority system will allow buses to bypass queues during busy periods."
Yet again all that matters (apart from overseas 'fact finding' trips) is the cooncil bus co.

"Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport leader, said: "Research has shown that traffic-signal controlled junctions have a better safety record than roundabouts where pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable."

Which "Research" was that, then? A gut feeling by the now largely unemployed David Begg?

Phil Wheeler couldn't recognise a road safety initiative if he tripped over it. What is for sure that the only resultant easing of congestion is caused by blocked traffic being prevented from making progress!

Replacing all these perfectly good roundabouts with traffic lights is total madness and a waste of money.

All traffic lights do is to cause congestion. If you can't handle driving round a roundabout, you shouldn't be on the road. Period.

I've never had any problem cycling around that roundabout. I know some other councils are removing traffic lights and installing roundabouts instead. Which council should we believe is the safer junction?

5 MONTHS TO REPLACE A ROUNDABOUT !!!!!

24,000 vehicles a day use it and they are putting it out of action for 5 months !
looks like they wont be working nights and weekends again...another example of the council not bothering aboot the east and folk coming from the east. Its another part of a route that is totally unavoidable for the majority of motirists coming into Edinburgh from East Lothian - its gonnae be sheer misery again.

use Public transport.....so when your on the 26 and it takes you an hour to get through the roadworks it will all be worth it.

It was bad enough last year with the Milton Road r/a,
but not another year.

Biggest problem is the shear volume of cars....would it not be better to have Peak Time traffic lights
...and then for the rest of the time, traffic would flow without having stationary cars at off peak times polluting the air.

Bob 2,

11/03/2008 13:04:24
yes the old question why 5 months.

the r/a at Duddingston/milton road, was removed within days but it still took months to install traffic lights and resurface the road.

Time and NO motion.

Milton road / Harry Lauder road roundabout was fine, no one ever had any delays. then they spend FIVE months turning it into a junction. is this snything to do with the council losing the congestion charging vote detirmined to make motorists life a misery?

Councilllor Child seems to think that the Council will have learned lessons from the previous shambles at Milton Link. Why? They never have before. The proposals at Seafield will cause utter chaos for the duration and I dont believe that the Council themselves realise the knock on effects there will be given the lack of alternatives for motorists in this part of Edinburgh.
Phil Wheeler goes on about accidents. Why? The proposals are not aimed at reducing accidents. The scheme is supposedly aimed at reducing bus journey times and if anything these gains are likely to be negligible and certainly not worth the £1.7M plus cost of the job(when has a council job ever come in on cost??) It would also be nice if the Council could make the previous bus priority measures work effectively, spending large sums of taxpayers money installing a system that doesnt even work properly.

If this is all about reducing accidents, could the cooncil please provide some accident stats to justify it?

I must agree with the some of the points above, though:
a) what's wrong with part-time lights?
b) what's wrong with working evenings and weekends? Everyone else has to do it if there's a big job on. Even Network Rail do it.

No way!!! what ANOTHER waste of tax payers money!!! i use that roundabout all the time even in rush hour traffic and its not that bad!! i say if its not broken dont fix it!!!

About time something was done. If you're travelling from Portobello it can be a nightmare to get onto the roundabout - you just can't see what's coming round because of the bushes growing in the middle of it. Might have been cheaper just to give the roundabout a trim though??

Young Gordon,

Edinburgh 11/03/2008 14:51:51
Aye this 'll be anither bad yin, that's fir sure!!
But it's the DELIBERATE 'Road Squeezing' that really gets me!!

Especially that terribly designed set of lights at the Bank of Scotland, that stop EVERYTHING going thru Porty whenever more than one bus (or any large vehicle) hits the area (2bus stops and 2lanes all merge into ONE at a really really really SLOW red light)!

They already reduced Seafield Road to one lane heading into Leith, and now they're going to put Bus Lanes onto Porto Road and Porto High Street are they?

Although I don't mind bus lanes so much, (I use the Bus regularly through here), and I'm a Car driver (who actually uses the lanes when we are allowed - these outside-lane-hoggers need a feckin brain injection), so my journey times aint so bad.

21

Young Gordon,

Edinburgh 11/03/2008 14:58:19
Now for my second pence worth:

Totally agree: 5 months to do this? You're having ANOTHER laugh at our expense! If this is a fixed price contract, then make them do it quicker than 5 months please!

I won't mind so much AFTER it's all done, as long as the 'peak time traffic signalling' works as well as the other two new projects do!

Another waste of public money.I don't recall ever having a problem getting to Sir Harry Lauder Road from Milton Link in the past but now that there are traffic lights we have queues back to the "Asda roundabout"

Of course the Kings Road Roundabout and the Milton Link Roundabout used to be controlled by traffic lights until the council changed them to roundabouts.

Great News!

Now then can we have the Drum Brae/St.John's Road roundabout replaced with TRAFFIC LIGHTS as it is dog eat dog at any time of the day when using the approach to this roundabout.

If this new roundabout has the same sucess as the one at Milton Link then it can only be a good thing.

The thing which they HAVE to address is the length of time taken to complete the project.

There should have been 24/7 works going on at Milton Link to comlete it sooner, but it dragged on for MONTHS.

Build the new roundabout but for goodness sake, get it completed in a decent amount of time!

This decision was taken by the last labour council and the monies were committed to this. Unfortunately it can't be stopped!!! It begs the question was the previous leaders of the council adverse to roundabouts in this city. 24,000 vehicles per day use the roundabout, which equates to 3504000 vehicles in the last 4 yrs, and there has been 1 fatality and 19 other incidents the majority involving slight injuries in the last 4 yrs. Now any death or injury is bad however does it justify fixing something that just clearly is not broken at a high cost to the majority of taxpayers. Oh I should have also stated the same Cllr Child was the labour spokes person for finance last year and presented their budget that this money was in. This has been put forward to promote the bus service who will have priority over every other roadtax paying member of the public. If the bus is running late the new traffic lights will have a system fitted that will recognise this and allow them through at the expense of every other road user.

More money wasted by the council. There are minimal delays there, the fact the Councils bus company is a few hundred yards away and may get longer green light times and therefore priority getting out the depot may have much to do with this.

"Iain Coupar, marketing director for Lothian Buses, said: "Bus priority measures in Edinburgh have always been successful." - yes for buses, but not for the majority of commuters, i.e. those that don't take the bus.

The Milton Link means longer delays for all as far is my experience, with perhaps exception of those coming from Asda at certain times of day, but only certain toimes of day.

#34???? You look right, if it's clear you go?? How confusing can that possibly be?

31

Bob 2,

12/03/2008 13:14:32
no 33, the contract goes to for approval to The Council tomorrow, so its not to late.

no 34 and how do you know how many people use the bus compared to the car, have you sat all day counting the number of people in them.

peak time bus carries 100 passengers , the equivalent to 100 cars coming into Edinburgh.

100 cars cause more congestion than 1 bus
32

PashedOff,

12/03/2008 13:21:29
Sorry, i dont get the references to the 'success of the Milton Link'. In what way was it sucsessful? 6 months of hell...60 minutes+ to do a 12 mile journey (Tranent to Seafield)...and now there is always a build up of traffic at the lights when the roundabout was often pretty clear...
33

allknowing,

17/03/2008 23:31:37
"Bus lanes will be put in on the approaches to the new junction, and a new priority system will allow buses to bypass queues during busy periods."

And this will help cut congestion how??

34

Drinking Session in a Brewery,

19/03/2008 13:31:44
The traffic problems at Seafield have only been created by the installation of traffic lights at Milton Link. All traffic now heads through Portobello to avoid the shambles at Milton Link. If they actually got the timings right for rush hour traffic it would help no end.

It is indeed a conspiracy to get all car drivers onto the Council Owned bus network.
35

Bob 2,

20/03/2008 12:36:02
no40 think you've been on the drink

it was like this before.

the majority of traffic comes from Harry lauder road going to seafield. The problem is the number of cars that use this stretch of road.

Biggest problem was caused by the Council, when they extended the pavement by a few feet at the Range Rover garage.

This Effectively this reduced the flow of traffic coming down moira terrace to the r/a to 1 lane.

result: Buses held up for no reason at all and congestion when there wasn't congestion before

Please do not do this ... I beg you!

Please do not waste 1.7M

Please do not do any mods to this roundbout.

Please ... its a really bad bad bad idea!

Traffic queues at the Seafield Road roundabout are bad enough ... if this goes as badly as the milton link junction then I will need to take a flask of coffee with me for the 1 hour wait during the roadworks and after construction is complete.

argh!!!!!!!!

I can't take the lies from the council anymore.

They are politicians and they lie, the queues because of the mods to the milton link roundabout are dreadful. The queues are longer ... I know they are because I wait in them everyday.

Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to kill myself .... because of these decisions!
