THE Fringe Festival has been dealt a major blow with the news that the Famous Spiegeltent will not be coming to the Capital this year.
Organisers of the Spiegel Garden in George Square, which has become a key feature of the Fringe, informed performers and agents this week of their decision to pull out.

Explaining the decision, Leith-based "Spiegelmaestro" David Bates, who has bee
n bringing the mirrored tent to Edinburgh for more than a decade, said he was taking the tent off the road for six months to carry out "essential maintenance".

He also said he would not be taking the venue to the Melbourne Festival this year.

The news comes just a month ahead of the final deadline for the Fringe programme, and is expected to leave many acts who were looking to perform at the Spiegeltent scrambling to find an alternate venue.

Mr Bates told performers: "The Famous Spiegeltent is being taken off the road for at least six months as there is significant repair and maintenance work to be done.

"Unfortunately, for this and other reasons, my Edinburgh Spiegeltent project is not viable in 2009.

"Spiegeltent International will also not be returning to Melbourne this year.

"I know this news might come as a disappointment to many, but I wish everyone well and look forward to working with you in the future."

Music promoter Loudon Temple said he had hoped to see American musicians the Hot Seats return to the venue this year after a five-star show in 2008.

"This will leave a huge black hole right at the very heart of the Fringe.

"Everyone who loves the special circus-comes-to-town atmosphere created when George Square is magically transformed into the Spiegel Garden will be very disappointed," he said.

John Barrow, who is organising the programme for the Acoustic Music Centre at St Bride's, in Orwell Terrace, was able to find room for the Hot Seats, and said he had been surprised by the announcement about the Spiegel Garden.

"It will be a shock to the performers who might have expected to play there, and we have already been contacted by two groups looking for alternative music venues," he said.

"It has been a big part of the festival for a number of years, and was probably one of the most popular venues last year

but I don't think it will affect the Fringe that much. It is a huge, amorphous event that will be able to cope – people who can't go to the Spiegel Garden will simply find somewhere else to go."

A spokesman for the Fringe confirmed that the Speigeltent would not be appearing, but could not give any indication of what, if anything, would take its place.

"We have been notified of the Spiegeltent's decision not to return to this year's festival," he said.

"The venue's site in George Square Gardens has been a busy Fringe hub in recent years and we're confident that any new arrival in the Gardens will prove as popular."

It just makes you wonder how many other shows and events will withdraw from the Edinburgh Festival this year.

Well, their beer was outraegeously expensive and the whole thing destroyed the grass in George Square Gardens.

What a great shame. This has become my favourite festival place over the past few years. Good shows and a great atmosphere (shame about the beer prices). Hope this is not indicative of a more substantial decline in the scale and quality of the Fringe this year.

#9 John Knox furr First Meenister

John, I was of course alluding to any other cancellations and withdrawals from the next Festival which could/would result from Edinburgh's 'essential tramworks'.

As a fellow "wee ray of sunshine" I would have thought that the great John Knox would have considered Edinburgh's Festival to be the works of the Devil anyway?

All the signs are that this is going to be a bad year for the Festival and for Edinburgh.

Hasn't most of the Fringe privatised itself off into some new "Comedy festival" which will, purely coincidentally you understand, run at the same time as the Fringe?

Mebbe that affected the Spiegeltent?

#19.... accomModation ;0)

On an even more pedantic note, it is not the Fringe Festival, but the Festival Fringe.

So there.

The Spiegeltent and the Spiegelgarden are an essential part of the Fringe. Instead of moaning about beer prices lets try and get David Bates to delay the maintenance until after the Festival. The Spiegeltent and garden are the core of our Fringe experience every year.

Firstly, I don't think there is any bigger story behind this other than the Spiegeltent needing maintenance, or it having anything to do with the tramworks! The Spiegeltent tours all around the world over the course of the year and as such makes money all year round, so it's not like they've pulled it from the festival to repair it and are then going to leagve it sitting idle in a shed for the rest of the year!!!
Secondly, I'm sure the Spiegel Garden will still be there, be it under a different name perhaps, as I really don't think Montpelliers, who run the bar, are going to miss out on the huge money making opportunity that it is. This unfortunately, for those of you who complained about the beer prices, means it will still be expensive(for the record, I would also be much happier if it weren't so expensive!).
Therefore I still look forward to drinking a beer under the stars in the "George Sq Beer Garden" (let's face it irrelevant of what it gets called we will all still be calling it "Spiegel"), it will just be a shame that it won't have the beautiful looking Spiegel Tent there for us to dance the night away in!

I have been watching George Square in Glasgow on a Web Cam for the past week and have been wondering what the very large tents that are now going up was all about.

It looks like it will be a huge success after all.
