Published Date:
04 July 2007
TO hundreds of Hearts fans, he was one of the most colourful characters among the Tynecastle faithful.
Creag Macallanniach - better known by his fans' website username IrvineJambo - led an amazing life before his untimely death from cancer at the age of 30.

A boxing champion and self-made millionaire, he had married a Bollywood star and obtained no less than four university degrees.

His tragic death prompted a rush of donations from fans of both Hearts and Hibs, as well as members of the Tartan Army, to Creag's favourite charities.

The sad news was also relayed to fans at Tynecastle during half-time at one game.

But Creag is causing a stir again a year after his death - after it emerged he never existed.

A Tynecastle season ticket holder - who had claimed to be Creag's nephew - has made a public apology, confessing to having invented his "uncle" and posed as him on the forum Jambos Kickback.

The hoaxer, who posts under the name Craig (WoSH), blamed his behaviour on a cancer scare which he said left him depressed and fearing he would die.
APOLOGY: Parts of the confession posted online by Craig Allan
APOLOGY: Parts of the confession posted online by Craig Allan

Craig(WoSH) is said to be Irvine-based Craig Allan, a 22-year-old bank worker and prominent member of the West of Scotland Hearts supporters' club.

In his confession on the website, Mr Allan said: "After speaking with my mother, I have been told to write this as I was trying to ignore it and hoping it would go away. I went into a shell, and began to lead my life online, create an online personality to escape reality.

"This part of my life is one I wanted to forget, and unfortunately it is coming back to haunt me, and is now going to ruin my life again. I won't be back at Tynecastle or Hampden for the foreseeable future."

Speaking about his decision to create the character, Mr Allan said: "I was just being a stupid wee boy at the time. I hope it hasn't hurt anyone and it has definitely done me a lot of damage. I wish the whole thing hadn't happened."

IrvineJambo had been a regular figure on the website for around a year before his "death".

The details of IrvineJambo's colourful life were revealed in a series of postings online.

After Mr Allan announced his passing, Hearts and Hibs fans donated more than £250 to the Everyman cancer charity and a guide dog charity. One Hibs fan even took part in a sponsored parachute jump in his memory.

However, fans became suspicious as they began to realise no-one had ever met IrvineJambo, despite his apparent high profile.

Mr Allan confessed after one fan promised to check death records and another threatened to call in the police. The hoax has angered many fans despite the apology.

Steven Kilgour, a member of the Federation of Hearts Supporters Clubs, said: "It is morally disgusting, and doesn't really matter if it's about football or not.

"The whole thing makes me quite sick and it undermines the genuine tributes to real Hearts fans who have died."

One regular poster on the site, who uses the name Coppercrutch, added: "I think a lot of guys are pretty annoyed at this, especially the ones who lost money."

Former administrator of Jambos Kickback, Scott Western, established the memorial fund for IrvineJambo. He said: "This is a very delicate and difficult situation. I am determined to establish that nothing untoward has occurred and take whatever action may be necessary if the charity payments cannot be traced."

The current director of Jambos Kickback Pete Lindsell, as well as the charities Guide Dogs and Everyman, declined to comment.

oh for God's sake..... look, either he's genuinely mentally ill, in which case we really shouldn't be castigating him in this way, or he's just a t***, in which case we shouldn't be giving him the attention he craves.

either way, could everyone just drop this now? its tedious in the extreme.

1. How many Jambos on the ST waiting list are real?

2. How many of the reported 400,000 Jambos are real?

shocking you should hang this guy up by his B*lls. But in all honesty how stupid are people, sorry not people Jambos, to give money to a fund when they have never met the person.
And as for the monkey that jumped out of the plane does he not know they do also land as well as take off, can someone tell him I have tickets for Elvis presley's comeback to life tour £150 each does he want them I have 4 to sell.

Aye, but he dive-bombed with flair.

Allegedly, upon jumping out of the plane at 30,000 feet he was hit on the backside by a Nerjus Barasa clearance at Tynecastle Stadium.

It is understood that the parachute jump took place in a field near Middlesex as well.

20

Flying Dutchman,

Edinburgh 04/07/2007 11:41:46

Look - he was feeling vulnerable having had a real health scare and has done something which he now regrets. In my mind he has:

1. Owned up - which must have taken some courage to do so in such a public way.
2. Exiled himself from Tynecastle - which must be making him feel bad (no doubt some may disagree with the pain of this particular decision).

As long as he proves the money donated by generous Hearts fans actually went to a good cause and he profusely apologises directly to Scott Western & other co-ordinators / organisers I think he should be allowed to get on & rebuild his self esteem. We all make mistakes we regret.

Agenda Aside,

Somewhere 04/07/2007 12:24:01

Jokes aside... personally I think Hearts and Hibs fans acted with complete altruism when faced with the news that someone had passed away.

Instead of looking upon it as being too gullible or being made to look stupid, I think it at least gives us some hope that there is still a sense of community (even on the internet) when someone needs help etc. Surely both sides can feel proud of themselves despite the 'real' agenda of this man.

Obviously he has some degree of mental health issues. These should be addressed - and I think that he knows this. It's embarrassing enough to be exposed on a fora, nevermind in the local news - I think he's probably suffering enough.

33

Personally, I think this is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time- I'm a Hibby, and the fact a fellow supporter jumped out of a plane in memory of the death of a fictional Jambo created by a wee fantasist is magnificent. you couldn't actually make it up. Apart form the 4 degrees and the bollywood wife of course. Oh, and the boxing championship.

I think this wee jambo fannybaws should get enrolled in a creative writing course asap. Surely there's a book or a short film in this?

I read some of this guys stuff at the time and all the Jambo's fawned over every word. He was seen as a voice of knowledge and experience.
The fact that his fantastical claims were obvious bollox, was lost on all but a very few Kickbackers.

BELIEVE

Ha ha ha. In the words of the great Mr Lydon

Unfortunately lads more bad news. Mr Romanov is not a made up character.

As wrong as this was and it must be upsetting to genuine cancer sufferers... Craig has obviously made a mistake and has apologised.

He has admitted feeling depressed at the time and Im sure his 'stories' ran away from him until he couldn't stop. Maybe he liked the life of his 'alter-ego' more than his own and this was a bit of escapism.

Hopefully he will be left to get over this on his own. For it to make the Edniburgh news is quite surprising, lets hope it doesn't reach his own local press.

53

Realistic Jambo,

I think it is a bit sad that this story has resorted to point scoring on this thread. If the guy is / was genuinely mentally ill, at the time of posting he should be getting medical help. If not, he should be jailed for his fraudulent activities. A lot of people trusted this poster, both Hibs & Hearts supporters, and to try and say one lot are more deluded than the other when being taken in by a cynical / mentally impaired "Irvine Jambo", leaves a nasty taste.

And the Jambos fell for that one too!!

You have a point, all football fans are deluded to some degree because their loyalty & passion often clouds the reality of their teams ability, size ect.

Gullability however is a different beast and I'm sure you would agree that when it comes to believing any old rubbish spoon fed to you, that the Jambos are in a class of their own. You've been there, done it and got the T-shirt.

61

This young man was an office bearer of the WOSH. How many of the Hearts supporters were taken in by this person. I feel sorry for him as he is obviously mentally ill. He needs help. We should let him get on with his life.

Mr. A,

Always thought he was a blaw myself and I stopped reading his posts well before he started the boxing champion and self-made millionaire nonsense. I'm actally surprised that anyone was interested enough in him to bother gathering all the bull stories together and sussing him out.

Like the vast majority of JKB members, I didn't contribute to his memorial fund and I'm sure that Hibby always fancied jumping out of a plane anyway.

He made this close season far more interesting than normal.

The guys an idiot.. Nobody beleived his stories, though if you were going to make stuff up on the net you wouldn't pretend to be a fool like IJ!! I had his 'wife' on my forum hmloyal.x.am trying to cause trouble.. I hope most of the money went straight to charity, not this guys pocket!
JKB is full of fantasists and people with a very tenous grip on reality, I can only presume it was a very slow news day!

Never underestimate 04/07/2007 20:07:25

I have never agreed with the saying that you cannot underestimate the stupidity of the general public. However the stupidity of some Hearts fans, especially those who populate the jambo forums is another matter.

If you feel strongly about it, call in John Smeaton to see to IrvineJambo. So you dafties can get in touch with John at johnsmeaton.com

Vlad says he is going to build a new stand for next year and he will sign world cup players to bring Hearts to the top of the league and compete in the champions league.

Yis believe all that pi$h so why not some sad wee daftie tied to his PC like a few folk on here?

I think he should be given an Arts Council grant! This stunt is pure genius. And the article doesn't say he got any of the money fans donated. Didn't know it was illegal to make a fool of people - if it was the last Edinburgh council would all be in jail.

Certainly anyone with four degrees supporting Hearts would be a dead giveaway.

112

Jock,

Look out for a big wheel. 05/07/2007 00:46:04

"A boxing champion and self-made millionaire, he had married a Bollywood star and obtained no less than four university degrees"
Now why would you have a whip round for a millionaire?
This is cyber space at its best, how much did you raise anyway? What where you thinking about. A thought it was only Vlad that had conned you Jambo followers. On the reality side what a sad wee Pr*k

So, a fake death inspired some people to donate to cancer charities or perform sponsored acts for charity?

People should fake their own death more.

116

Eddie,

As a result of reading this, I had a look at JKB for the first time. There you can look at previous issues of the fanzine - ATB.

The one I looked at (No 61) had some great stories in it - references to 'Captain Fantastic' Steven Pressley - a real Hearts great, wonderful ambassador for the club, etc, and some glowing comments about Paul Hartley - marvellous player, great Hearts legend, etc, etc.

However, things move on...

As punishment he should be made to have a season ticket at the Hobo's hear there having trouble shifting them!!! Or is that too harsh on the guy

Taxi for Brellier,

He should be strung up by the b*lls , but he hasn't got any as even in his disgrace he puts out that the apology was instigated by a discussion with his mother , when even Stevie Wonder can see it was down to bricking himself over the status of his employment and liberty.

looking forward to reading of him joining the dole queue.

Dave1974,

This boy has problems. That much as obvious.

In the grand scheme of things though, at least he didn't sink so far to ever want to be a HOBO.

I would've personally taken him out myself.....
