HEARTS' top-six aspirations were extinguished following a disappointing draw in Ayrshire that means the winner of Monday's Aberdeen-Falkirk match will secure their place in the SPL's upper half.
The visitors survived a first-half bombardment from their hosts but recovered after the interval to perform with far more cohesion. A late header from Christian Nade may have accorded them victory but the Frenchman nodded the ball into the turf from
only three yards.

The point sees Hearts level on points with Falkirk with Aberdeen two behind, leaving Stephen Frail and Co to contemplate their first bottom-six finish since the SPL split took effect in season 2000/01.

Gary Locke returned to the Kilmarnock side rather appropriately on such a critical day for the club which reared him. Virus-stricken Hearts enlisted the Argentine Fernando Screpis for his first start, whilst Kestutis Ivaskevicius and Ibrahim Tall also returned, coach Stephen Frail re-organising due to several regulars toiling with illness.

Anthony Basso endured an early fright in front of a vociferous 1700-strong travelling support, the goalkeeper's indecision allowing a Kilmarnock corner to career fortunately off his chest before bouncing to safety. However, he recovered to deliver a display which at times was nothing other than brilliant. He held a low drive from James Fowler with the hosts endeavouring to press Hearts onto the back foot, and on 17 minutes produced a momentous stop with his feet, denying Danny Invincibile a certain goal from David Fernandez's cross.

It was becoming apparent that Kilmarnock were turning the screw, although at the opposite end Hearts suffered due to their inherent lack of an attacking presence. Whilst the simpler catches seemed to tax Basso, the goalkeeper was airborne on 26 minutes to expertly palm away David Lilley's near-post header from Fernandez's corner.

Jim Jefferies' side again came close to convering their superiority into goals when full-back Tim Clancy struck a post following another Fernandez delivery. Basso then repelled Clancy's cross after it glanced off Jose Goncalves' head, and Craig Bryson only succeeded in scooping the rebound over the crossbar. Moments later, Goncalves was fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty for a late challenge on Bryson.

Half-time arrived with most inside Rugby Park toiling to explain why the hosts weren't at least holding a one-goal advantage.

Hearts emerged for the second period looking more resilient, with Screpis and Ruben Palazuelos initiating tidy passing movements from midfield. From Larry Kingston's free-kick, captain Christophe Berra headed off the base of Alan Combe's right-hand post before Stephen Frail replaced the ineffective Kestutis Ivaskevicius with teenager Gary Glen to increase attacking options.

Kingston's 65th-minute withdrawal was more difficult to comprehend, which may explain the midfielder's decision to saunter up the tunnel rather than watch the remainder of the match from the substitutes' bench. Combe's reflex save prevented Nade opening the scoring on 68 minutes and Palazuelos' rebound effort was blocked, however Hearts were by now threatening with reasonable regularity.

Mehdi Taouil, Kilmarnock's Moroccan forward, again brought out the best in Basso by angling a curling right-footed effort which required the Frenchman's fingertips to stop. That signalled a late advancing by the hosts but their industry was in vain. In the closing moments, Fraser Wright was dismissed for a second booking when he fouled Nade, and the Tynecastle striker bizarrely headed Michael Stewart's free-kick over from three yards when it seemed easier to score.

With that went Hearts' top-six chances. The visitors had performed considerably better after half-time than before, but their aspirations of finishing in the league's upper half died as all eyes switch to Pittodrie on Monday evening.

Kilmarnock (4-3-1-2): Combe; Clancy, Lilley, Wright, Hay; Fowler, Locke, Bryson; Taouil; Invincibile, Fernandez. Subs: Harpur, Wales 73 (for Fernandez), Gibson, Dalglish, O'Leary, Hamill 89 (for Taouil), Flannigan 73 (for Locke).

Hearts (4-5-1): Basso; Neilson, Tall, Berra, Goncalves; Kingston, Ivaskevicius, Screpis, Palazuelos, Mikoliunas; Nade. Subs: Banks, Elliot 86 (for Screpis), Wallace, Glen 58 (for Ivaskevicius), Husband, Stewart 65 (for Kingston), McGowan.

Attendance: 5901.

Referee: Craig Thomson.

Does this mean that you guys can finish in 3rd possibly 4th? given that there are 5 games to go (15 Pts) you's could finish on 57 points, this may be enough for 3rd spot and europe next season! Is this possible? given that we apparently finished 7th last season? Anyway, enjoy life with Gretna & co!

#3 - 'Looking forward to next season' - why??

This Hearts team is the worst I've ever seen. Our only decent players left are Berra and Kingston and I've got a sneaky suspicion they wont be here come next season. Every player of any value whatsoever will be sold off by Vlad and we will be left with Lithuanian duds. Oh and of course the fantastic talents of Calum Elliott and Jamie Mole.

Vlad is ruining our club and I certainly will not be going back until he is out. he doesnt care about our club, only the money he can make from it. (Dont mention the money he is putting into the stadium redevelopment because it will not happen). As long as he is in charge we will see plenty more bootom six finishes or even worse. So plenty to look forward to eh??

Just a wee note to all you yams who were mouthing off throughout the season with comments like "just wait until the end of the season and we will be above you" - WHERE ARE YOU NOW?
Big team in bottom six - ha ha ha. How embarassing considering the diatribe that has been spewd out of so many on these boards.
Spending zillions of pounds has really worked - NOT - and yet so many still believe. How sad.
What spin will we get from the "big team" now? Oh I know, they will play the BOTTOM teams and possibly end up with more points than some teams in the TOP six so that will make them higher up in the final league positions.
BOTTOM SIX IS BOTTOM SIX - END OF.

See the wee teamers are out creaming themselves at the once in a decade acheivement of finishing above the big the team. Finishing in the lower half once since 1993 is what makes us a big team, how many times have you been down there ? how many relegations in that time ?

You'd think you'd be out enjoying it, naw you'd rather be on here creaming yourself.

#48. Not all sadly - a few of us decided that top 6 was not worth the effort and come to Aintree where at least we are a few grand up.

Not sure be wasting any on a season ticket next year - 1st non top 6 for 15 years.

Disillusioned since January when there seemed to be some momentum for protests, boycotts to register displeasure to UKIO shareholders, but a few hollow words from Vlad and all was right again to far too many.

Those of us willing to do something, made impot*nt by these wimp supporters and hope they enjoy the rest of season as until I see some commitment from Vlad, won't be giving him any of my money.

Season tickets may only cost relatively a few pennies, but can think of so many better ways to spend a Saturday than watch 3rd rate football.

20 year season ticket holder, so stood through some bad times, not this bad though.

Disappointed? Yes. Despondent? No. Hey it's only a game and there are things in life much more important than football, despite what Bill Shankley thought.

Let's hope we use the remainder of the season constructively and get it sorted for next season. As the song says, "though we sometimes go doon we can aye go back up" - and statistically we can still say Hibs have only beaten us once in the league in the last two seasons. Small comfort, but there you go.

Anyway, which Hibees started the celebratory bonfire in Albion Road?

The Balmoral is my local when I'm visiting friends up the dark side of town.

Whoosh.... another wind blows past the doors as a can scuttles into the gutter beside victor.

More from Kickback

Better team on the park and in a far, far sounder financial position.

Sickening.

Lovin it

Credit where credit is due , they have a better team than us

getting paid peanuts

We have a bunch of overpaid monkeys extracting the urine out of us .

Best one yet

They have the bragging rights this season, nothing more nothing less. Just have to take it on the chin.

Got to say though .... they are run by professionals and it shows.

We are run by a bunch of clowns and it shows.

It's only a game..... you seem to be rather confused, Kickback is a Hearts site not somewhere for Hobo's to hang out. Go an take a long walk up Fisherow harbout, hopefully the tide is in.....

Never even knew they had internet in gypo land, mind a couple of years ago I had to order a taxi to get out of the place..... Had a light a fire to make the smoke signals.

Comes close to the best

Regardless of all this big team/wee team nonsense.

The dividing line is, they are a *cough* professional team and we are an amateur team in the way both clubs are run.

We'll never fulfil the potential that exists when we are run by effin' monkeys.

I wonder what it's like in the bottom 6?? Can you weeteamers fill us in on what it's like as weeteams like Hibs are down there more than often?? Don't ask us what it's like to win the Scottish Cup as weeteams like Hibs will never do this! Hope you don't get in Europe as you really embarrass Scottish Football whilst there!? Hibs fans = supporters of Edinburgh's weeteam who've basically got nothing over Hearts when it comes to footballing statistics apart from having floodlights first.

eh?
you would rather your team wasted millions on pash players and finish 8th rather than pay less and finish 3rd???

we have no financial power or we wouldn't be selling all our top earning players
104

Rolland,

Rolly

We've been in the top six for the last couple of weeks in case you've missed it. Oh no you were concentrating on splitting the OF.

Enjoy Gretna, Inverness, Killie again to see your old manager as it's been some time since you had one.
110

Rolland,

05/04/2008 22:17:44
106 - Very good, seriously liked that at least its semi orginal.

Anyway, enjoy your loft position, we will re-group and come back stronger have no worries about that. Looking forward to collect 15 out of 15, wouldn't bank on Hibs picking up more points, I hear it wasn't exactly flair football on show again today.
111

ty175,

Rolly (fatboy)

"we will re-group" - Oh aye, when SF gets his pro-licence. Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

Oh aye, and when you get 15 out of 15?

a) Bet you any money you don't
b) Still bottom six. Loser.
