FORMER Death Row Scot Kenny Richey said today he was on the brink of suicide after being pictured allegedly snorting cocaine.
The 43-year-old said his mum is on the verge of throwing him out after seeing the photograph in a tabloid Sunday newspaper. He also fears being banned from the United States, where he plans to visit his dying father.

Richey claimed he was only pretending to take the Class A drug during a drunken party at a flat in Abbeyhill.

He said: "I was really drunk and posed for a camera phone pretending to do a line. The guy told me he deleted it, but he lied.

"I feel like people are out to get me. I've never been closer to ending it all and committing suicide than I am right now."

What a truely self centred, selfish low life individual, putting his mother through even more trauma. Could have said it better No. 1.

Give the guy a break,so what he may or may not have taken drugs, I have actually met the guy last sat,and i have to say he was stone cold sober at 3am,having a night out with a friend and generally keeping himself to himself. He was very pleasant to myself and friends and not once did he or us talk about his past. give him a break.Im in no way accepting what he did or didnt but let him be.

Why was this guy allowed to enter this country? He is a convicted criminal. And before anybody tries to deny this, he admitted a lesser charge to get out of prison.

He is not British / Scottish. He is Dutch of an American father and Scottish mother, and has lived only 18 months in Scotland.

We have more than enough junkies here, living on state handouts, without importing more.

I just hope L&B police read the same article and do their duty.

Kenny - If you're going to attend a "drunken party", and "pretend" to do a line of coke, and allow it to be photographed - then the only person "out to get you" appears to be your stupid self!

He shoots, he scores! Right into the back of his own net....

How stupid can you get? You know you have been in the news world wide and have recently courted publicity with your story, what do you then go and do... be pictured apparently snorting a line of cocaine at a party. This must be one of his most stupid actions. I feel sorry for his poor mother, believing she had lost her son, getting him back then finding out he is a total moron. I think she should let him go and make his own way in life before something worse happens.

I do not condone what Kenny Richey has done. It was stupidity of the highest level.

However some of the comments on here need correcting.

#10 He is not a kiddy murderer. He pled NO CONTEST to not babysitting and to stealing some flowers. The prosecution DROPPED the murder and arson charge because the evidence did not support it and never did.

#14 He was allowed to enter the country because YES he is a UK citizen.
He was born in Holland while his father was based there with the forces.
It was always assumed he was Scottish. However it was discovered many years ago that the law in 1964 was that If a child was born in a foreign country and not that of either parent then the child automatically took the father's nationality. Which was American in this case. This was fought through courts and parliment for many people due to it being discriminatory and it was won. Kenny along with many others was granted his UK citizenship several years ago.

And actually he lived in Edinburgh till he was 18 years old.

I am sure L and B police did read the article and hopefully the scumbag drug dealer is caught also.

However, has anyone actually considered that this guy has been locked up for 21 years and is suffering a great deal with trying to adjust to living a normal life?

He has to be suffering post traumatic disorder and while the symptoms are not pleasant to watch, this is what we are all watching.

Maybe now he will get some of the help he so badly needs.

He is more to be pited than laughed at and thats the truth.

No one knows his emotional state after all that has happened so dont be so quick to judge.

There but for the grace of God go I is the saying another is

Oh, Great Spirit, grant that I may not criticize my neighbor until I have walked a mile in his moccasins." - Old Indian Prayer

#24 - Skotkaz - Aww c'mon. It was quite funny.

I think it's a fairly safe bet that this bloke will be behind bars for doing something really stupid before the year's out.

25

Scotkaz,

07/04/2008 21:40:29
I said it was amusing:) I think you might find that he will end up in hospital before the years out to be honest, if he doesnt get his act together.

But seriously, he has been free three months or so after a 21 year ordeal under harsh circumstance, how on earth can he act and react like a "normal" person without the proper help.

Even with the proper help it would take time to recover from such an experience.
26

Sunny Jim,

07/04/2008 22:41:24
I'm not amused by him, I find it sad that he's gone off the rails so quickly. I would have thought that he'd be doing all he could to prove that he's an upright citizen. He seems to be doing nothing to improve his situation.
27

Scotkaz,

Sunny Jim

I agree with you. He hasnt done a lot to help himself. In fact he has done the opposite. But I truly believe he just does not know what on earth he is doing at times.

People expect him to move on with his life, and act normal. But he has lived an abnormal life for so long I dont know how long it would take for him to know what is normal. It is sad.

Ferry Resident # 14,

As usual, you and a number of others come on these forums making accusations based on false information. HE DID NOT PLEAD GUILTY TO A LESSER CHARGE. And can I just ask you what you would do if you were wrongly convicted.
(1) Plead guilty to a lesser charge and be released
(2) Refuse to plead guilty and potentially stay in prison for the rest of your life.

Tough one isn't it? Well, Ritchie chose the second option.

If this guy is a kiddy killer then why has one of the strictest countries in the world on issues of justice just released the guy from prison?

A little while ago, Kenny was a hero for helping a woman in a pub. Now, he's a pariah. How fickle people are!

Well done, Scotkaz, for adding some balance to this thread of comments. And shame on you, all the mean-sprited individuals who have posted vindictive acrimonious comments on this and other stories on this man. Lots of people ready to cast the first stone here.

I wonder if anyone has heard the excellent programme 'All in the Mind' about life on Death Row, during which Kenny is interviewed. It's still available as a Podcast here:

Should be there till Monday. Well worth listening to.

Thank you Snowfinch. that is a great article and I have saved it and the transcripts of it.

People need to realise that while all these media reports may make "interesting" reading to some that behind it all that this is a mans life. A man who anyone can see is simply not coping with life and who needs help and understanding. Not constant critisism and people making judgements on things they simply do not understand.

People expected it to be like it is in the movies where the freed prisoner walks out and lives happily ever after. Or like they think they would be if they where saved from death row.

We are seeing now that no it is not like that and it is all very tragic.

The bitter and twisted irony of the Richey case is that the prosecutor, Randall Basinger, who cynically elevated an accidental death to murder by arson by convincing a panel of three judges (not a jury),of his fantastic arson theory of events leading to the death of 2 year old Cynthia Collins, now holds the title of judge and is required to dispense justice, a concept he denied to Cynthia Collins and Kenny Richey, for personal and political reasons. Undoubtedly, Richey's bizzare behaviour since release portrays him as the ultimate rectal orifice, which is not in it's self grounds for incarceration on death row, but coversely not a bar to being elected president. but certainly in this case indicative of post traumatic stress syndrome. The "good ol' boys" in Putnam County not only sentenced a man to death for a crime that he or anyone else ommitted, they did so knowing that the forensic evidence on which the three judge panel ruled was distorted, and unchallenged by Richey's defence attorney Bill Kluge. The fact that murder and arson charges were withdrawn reflects the desire of those involved in the prosecution, investigation and sentence of Kenny Richey to protect their reputations. How can Basinger reconcile justice with his handling of the Richey case?
