LOTHIANS MSP Margo MacDonald hit back at Europe Minister Linda Fabiani after she rejected plans for a welcome centre to help migrants from Eastern Europe.
In January, Ms MacDonald called for a facility at Edinburgh Airport to identify migrants' qualifications, their ability to speak English and to provide advice on employment, training courses and other services.

Last month she met the Polish ambassador to Britain, Barbara Tuge-Erecinska, to discuss her idea. But Ms Fabiani has rejected the plans, saying it was not the Scottish Government's role to provide such a service.

She said: "This is something local authorities are much better placed to provide."

Ms MacDonald responded: "She has still missed the basic point. A welcome centre is a better way of identifying how many migrants we have."

" to identify migrants' qualifications, their ability to speak English and to provide advice on employment, training courses and other services"

She's got to be having a laugh.

I'm not shocked at the response from poster 1, however under the barnett formula , many millions of pounds have been allocated to scotland because of the surge in immigrents to England, but as usual this money sent to scotland is spent on scots..

#1 I agree; isn't it a bit late to going through qualifications/language capability/etc... when you're already through the arrivals lounge ? Shouldn't this be done prior to departure ?

It's not so much the migrants who have arrived legitimately by air, it's the ones not covered at all by any arrival mechanism! Surely people who have arrived in this country with passport and other means of id can be counted and identified from passport control stats.

It's a bit more difficult to figure out who came in on the back of a lorry with fake passport and no other id and who then disappear apparently with the governmment's blessing!

Do you feel concerned by the staff shortages in the city’s Indian restaurants?
No, I don’t really like Indian food
Yes, I think it will mean a fall in quality
They’re businessmen, they’ll find a way around it.
