BEST-SELLING author Ian Rankin has said he may continue to write about fictional Edinburgh detective Inspector Rebus after his latest novel Exit Music.
During a promotional trip to Canada, the city-based crime writer said that he may bring his hard-drinking sleuth back in future novels - even though the latest book sees Rebus retire from the Capital's police force.
At a book-signing event in Toronto, Rankin told fans that he had considered killing off the famous character but now planned to give him cameo appearances in future books, which are likely to feature Rebus' female protege, Siobhan Clarke.
He said: "I've been cruel enough to him over the years. He's been punched, he's been kicked, he's been shot. He's lost a lot of friends, he's lost family. It would be the final indignity of his long and glorious life if I were to kill him. So I couldn't do it."
