BEST-SELLING author Ian Rankin has said he may continue to write about fictional Edinburgh detective Inspector Rebus after his latest novel Exit Music.
During a promotional trip to Canada, the city-based crime writer said that he may bring his hard-drinking sleuth back in future novels - even though the latest book sees Rebus retire from the Capital's police force.

At a book-signing event in Toronto, Rankin told fans that he had considered killing off the famous character but now planned to give him cameo appearances in future books, which are likely to feature Rebus' female protege, Siobhan Clarke.

He said: "I've been cruel enough to him over the years. He's been punched, he's been kicked, he's been shot. He's lost a lot of friends, he's lost family. It would be the final indignity of his long and glorious life if I were to kill him. So I couldn't do it."

This seems at odds with last month's TV programme, when Rankin mooned around Edinburgh considering possible venues for Rebus's demise. Obviously had a change of heart - bless him.

Went to Ian Rankin's talk at Burlington Art Centre last Thursday evening given before over 500 fans! He was witty & funny drawing loud applause before taking questions about Rebus and his future. I asked him to consider using Rebus along with other "old" detectives as in the BBC series "New Tricks", in new tales of Edinburgh and he then said that was quite an uppermost thought in his mind. Seems like Rebus won't just fade away after all!

Today's Vote

Is Ian Rankin right to praise author Katie Price (Jordan) for boosting literacy?
Yes - she must be raising reading levels if people are buying her books
No - I've seen better literature on the back of a bus ticket
Errr... I only bought mine to look at the pictures
