Mixu wants Euro clashes to be part of Hibs' future

HIBS headed for Europe today with boss Mixu Paatelainen declaring: "This should be our destination every year."
And if the Easter Road club's interest in the InterToto Cup was seemingly ended by IF Elfsborg's 2-0 win in the Capital, Paatelainen believes the experience of facing the Swedish outfit will help his players achieve that aim in future years.

Hibs' bid to overcome the odds this year will be boosted by skipper Rob Jones, who is available for tomorrow's match at the Boras Arena after recovering from the ankle injury which saw him miss the second half against the Swedes at Easter Road last weekend.

While accepting that his aim of finishing the coming season by clinching a place in the UEFA Cup is a bold one, the Hibs manager insisted it was a realistic target for his squad.

Having taken over from John Collins when Hibs were languishing eighth in the SPL table, Paatelainen steered his side into a three-way battle for third place, and UEFA Cup action, only to see his players slip into sixth place.

But, given that experience, he firmly believes his squad, which he aims to further strengthen over the coming weeks, is more than capable of doing much better.

As he checked in at Edinburgh Airport with a full squad en route to Sweden for tomorrow's second leg tie, Paatelainen said: "Is the UEFA Cup our target? Absolutely. We are a big club and I think we should be challenging for a European place every year. We want to do better than sixth and if we do that we won't be far from a place in the UEFA Cup.

"Our target is to do as well as possible and I feel with the tremendous backing of our supporters and the traditions of this club we should challenge for a UEFA Cup spot at least."

And Paatelainen insisted it was to that end he'd agreed Hibs' entry to the InterToto Cup despite the necessity of his players returning early for pre-season training.

He said: "Gaining European experience was one reason for entering. European football is totally, totally different to the SPL. Every country has their own style, their own mentality and approach to the game.

"People who say it's just 11 against 11, that it's just the same game of football, but they wouldn't say that if they'd taken part in such matches.

"These games against Elfsborg will provide invaluable experience for our players, most of whom have never played in Europe, and that's why I'll be making changes for tomorrow's game, to give as many of them as possible that opportunity."

Paatelainen, who insisted Hibs will "go for it" as they bid to get an early goal to unsettle the Swedes, is delighted with the news that Jones has been declared fit.

"Rob trained with the rest of the squad on Wednesday and there has been no reaction so he will be available.

"When the swelling went down on the ankle it wasn't as bad as we thought it might have been to start with."

Jings! Quiet the day.

Just like the Hibs on the transfer front. Can't help but think old Mixu's got this all the wrong way round.

If he doesn't get the league off to a good start, he could be in deep schtook. Be surprised if any of the other managers would be under the same pressure.

Anyway, we'll see.

Wise words Mixu, what a brainy wee man you are, all other SPL Managers are just happy with Playing in Scotland and have never thought that european football.

I'm a thinkin' a little more thinkin' about new signings might be more important for Mixu than worrying about Europe at the moment!

#4 Nail on head young man. The lack of ambition and comittment is appalling at Easter Road. Personally, I`m sick of `no news` news and meaningless articles when the club are quite clearly dragging their heels and assuming the ostrich position. Pure neglect, nothing else.

Errr... aye Mixu a real blinder of a statement...

I think its fair to say that 100% of all Hibs fans want European fixtures to be part of our future as many seasons as is possible....

How about trying to sign some new players of a decent enough quality to ensure that this time next year we're in a position to be looking forward to the UEFA cup proper?

Just a thought big man....

Hallitosis - Stop being so silly, your boss will be round in a minute no doubt to ensure your doing the filing & photocopying or to send you to Greggs for the cakes. I wouldnt want you to get caught and get a row you know.

Hearts are on top of what exactly? A large bank deficit perhaps?

Ronaldo Stuffed Everyone,

#7 I was never a fan of him but Collins at one point had Hibs top of the SPL. He also won the CIS.
Mixu has done hee-haw in comparison.
As for Hibs slipping to 6th - the only reason they reached 3rd was that the other teams had a lot of games still in hand. As soon as these games were played Hibs fell back to their true position.
Its important that Hibs do well at the weekend as its good for scottish. If Hibs @rse up in what is effectively the European diddy competition, then its bad for the image of the SPL.

Lenny,

Ronaldo

You really have do idea dude. How long did JC have Hibs top for? 24 hrs mate!!! Christ, Jim Duffy had Hibs top for longer than that. Totally flaws your argument.

Mixu has done He-haw? SIX MONTHS (yes just SIX) he has been here. And he took us from 8th to top 6. What do you expect? The treble?

Seriously, I assume you must be on the wind up most of the time as you dont half come out with nonsense.

May i respectfully suggest/beg/plead those in charge of "news" at Easter Road to at least give us a rumour of a new signing. Anything will do thanks. I'm getting anxious.

Looking at the photgraph of Fletch at the airport may I also suggest that Hibernian FC, through Mixu tells players that when they appear in photgraphs like this that they are representing a club with a fine history. Surely a shirt and a club tie is not too much to expect is it? He looks like one of a gang of numpties I saw last week in Princess Street gardens with scary starey eyes and a bottle of something nasty.

#10 & 17 Hibernian go into their 84th European tie in the Swedish city of Boras tomorrow knowing that they must score three to go through - although a glance at the Club's rich European history will show that is an achievement Hibernian have managed no few than ten times.

One of those ten occasions when Hibernian have scored three or more away from home was indeed against a Swedish side, Djurgaarden

to be honest i think hibs can win in sweden, if we get the early goal it will play into our hands.
lack of activity in the transfer market is a real worry for all hibs fans especially in the midfield dept, but i am sure mixu knows what he needs to do to build HIS team for the new season, and hopefully he will surprise us sooner than later.

on a happier note hearts have given there managers job to some bloke who did some thing somewhere in africa.

Good to see the majority of fans waking up to the scandal of Petrie's lack of investment.
The fans have supported the team superbly in recent years. If quality - non bargain basement - signings are not forthcoming soon it is time that we as fans get ourselves organised again.
Pressure must be put on the board to release significant funds and put their white elephant stand on hold.
PS See the much vaunted £5 million training centre is attracting quality players in droves, much more so than a decent wage structure eh Rod?

Does Mixu know that hibs have only qualified to play in Europe 5 times during the past 30 years?

If Mixu "wants" hobo Euro clashes in the future, he is going to have to oust Petrie and Farmer who have clearly demonstrated their lack of ambition.

#25. Oh dear, winning the league in Hungary a couple of times is significantly more than anything pantyliner has ever done or will do.

You show great faith in pantyliner "hopefully he will surprise us sooner than later". Sounds like same old, same old from the hobos, no players left and just hoping for the best. That is why Hearts are, always have been and always will be Edinburgh's most succesful, biggest and best supported team.
