Published Date: 28 June 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today admitted he's keen to keep midfield star Dean Shiels at Easter Road – but insisted there was no need to rush into contract talks with the Northern Ireland ace.
Shiels is about to enter the final season of his current deal having established himself as a fans' favourite after becoming one of former manager Tony Mowbray's first signings, arriving as a virtual unknown from Arsenal four years ago.

The 22-yea
r-old looked to be heading for the exit door when he appeared to fall out of favour under Paatelainen's predecessor John Collins with Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood said to be ready to pounce.

But Paatelainen's appointment saw a dramatic turnaround in Shiels' fortunes with seven of his ten goals last season coming after the big Finn's arrival, three of them in his first match as the Easter Road side romped to a 3-0 Scottish Cup win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

While Hibs fans are desperate to see the club tie up Shiels on a new deal, Paatelainen said: "Dean has done really well since I came in, he's scored regularly and has played fantastically well.

"He is a player that I like, there's no question about that and I want to keep our best players. ButDean still has a year left on his contract so there is no rush at the moment."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen has received a first-hand report on InterToto Cup opponents IF Elfsborg having dispatched coach Gareth Evans to watch the Swedish side in cup action against Halmstad BK.

And Evans was treated to a thriller with Elfsborg, who enjoy a 4-1 lead from the first leg of their InterToto tie against HB Torshavn from the Faroe Islands, winning in a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw after extra-time.

Elfsborg were trailing until the final minute when Mathias Floren equalised only to fall behind again in extra-time before substitute Elmin Kurbegovic hauled them level for a second time.

Paatelainen wasn't surprised to hear Elfsborg had fielded goalkeeper Johan Wiland, who saved two spot-kicks before his side won 6-4 on penalties, and midfielder Anders Svensson who had both been on Euro 2008 duty with their national side a few days ago.

The Hibs boss said: "It was worthwhile Gareth going as Elfsborg had a strong team out and it was a hard match for them.

"I wasn't surprised to hear both Wiland and Svensson had played despite having been with the Swedish side in the European Championships.

"People here think they have been playing all winter when, in fact, their season started just three months ago although there haven't been league matches in Sweden for the past four weeks because of Euro 2008."

However, in addition to Wednesday night's cup game against Halmstad, Elfsborg, currently second in the Allsvenskan with just one defeat in 11 matches, will return to league action this midweek when they face Djurgardens which will ensure, according to Paatelainen, that they'll be in top condition before arriving in Edinburgh for next Sunday's match.

"They are in a different situation to us but we won't concentrate too much on them. We'll try to make sure we play the right way," he added.

Why wait? Better to tie Dean Shiels up on a longer contract now and reward his progress (and his patience) with a good wage increase. He is a valuable player for the team. A midfielder / attacker who can get at least 10 goals a sason, maybe more. He is probably the coolest finisher in one on one situations with the goalkeeper.

7 Don't make me laugh Hibs try to keep their players! And its the Andrew Duncan Clinic actually, you hobos should know your lot are never away from the place except when you sign on the dole of course.

Cannot possibly see any benefit in not getting Deano signed up now. Put it to bed quickly and allow the lad to fully focus on the forthcoming matches.

Something doesn't seem right with this imo.

We desperately need an on song Shiels as there are zero other players in the squad with any creativity or imagination. (not counting Zoomer as he is still injured).

Deano is a decent guy, whatever happens he will always be remembered for "doing" that big spotty git after scoring the pen, funny, as at the time I thought Deano would have bounced off of him, he may look small and agile but he must be 20 stone at least to do that.
Anyway, we should give him a new contract as soon as possible, one of our best players at the moment, just needs to be more consistent on performances, in both halfs of matches and from game to game.

All there in black and white. Hibs money all accounted for.

herts on the other hand are several £squillion in the doo-doo, net of assets. And you might just ask why it cost £3.3m to 'register' 3 kaunas diddies?

Your last sentence is looking more and more like wishful thinking.

Note from Craig Gordon:

'Please keep Dean Shiels in Scotland. I will always remember him as The Incredible (Green) Hulk. But when I come back to Scotland next year to play for Dundee Utd, then you can transfer him back to the English Premier League. (tremblng lip now) Just don't let him anywhere near me (tears now)'.

No 13.
Yes, yes and yes. To answer your question.

No14. 35K a week interest made me choke on my cornflakes.
The next little ditty about Hertz staff and payroll turnover made me spill my coffee:

The 2007 ratio of 121% is usually only seen when clubs are in dire straits or have some external source of income that is helping them out.

Is 'Long live HoMFC' your prayer to the Vlad gods UlsterJambo, or a forlorn acknowledgment of over a hundred years of existing as a club undone in 3 years?

#17 Shocker

These bits of advice coming from you and other Botany Bay exiles are invaluable. We have enough poor signings made in the last 2 years without adding to them and in this case blocking the way through for strong young left side wing backs like Hanlon and Currie. The Hibs management team must have seen Chelsea on his CV and thought - 'must be good'. We already have an example of the 'not necessarily good' from that source with Morais.

PS to Shocker

'Super' Tortolano was a cult figure and hero with the Hibs fans. The day he finally scored will never be forgotten!

To neutral ob Chelsea is also a suburb of melbourne and they have a team that play on a public park i think keenan may just get a game the hibees were alerted to scott mcdonald years ago from hibs fans down under.

Keenan could do a good job at Easter Road, he was reccommended to them by Grant Brebner an ex Hibs player currently playing with Melbourne Victory.

To be honest keenan didn't have a good year last year at Victory but was hampered by injuries, his pre-season was very impressive.

#23, Keenan is mince. End of...

Yes he was injured a bit last season but he was completely inadiquate at tackling, passing, running, and just generally playing... Not a man to do a job at ER that's for sure.

However I'm absolutely with Shicker here on the Sarkies shout, he's young, fast, an accurate passer and two good shooting feet too. Sign him Mixu before other Euro clubs do...

While The Chief...

sorry that should read shocker obviously.

We in Melbourne already have a Tortolano-esqe figure in the form of Steve, pantsman, pantolidis. He's as good as the first sylable of his surname would suggest...

Warrnambool Hibee,

Keenan always thought he was too good for Melbourne Victory, and especially got the sads up when he couldn't get a game! I agree injuries hampered him but they are part and parcel of the game and he showed no spirit in overcoming them, except that he sooked when he did not go straight back into the first team. If Benji goes, Hibs should try and poach Danny Allsopp!

Some guys on here have been drinking too much VB, Keenan=rubbish, sarkies=rubbish, Allsopp=rubbish only guy from oz league i'd even consider is that joel griffiths at newcastle and thats only a maybe, plenty good young scottish lads at Hibs who can do just as well as the names mentioned.
