Hibs 3 - 2 Hearts
A HAT-TRICK from Ireland under-19 international Kurtis Byrne earned Hibs the East of Scotland Shield at Easter Road.
The home side had to come from behind twice to get the better of their Edinburgh rivals last night but, after getting his team back on level terms twice in the first half, Byrne fired home a last-minute winner to seal the silverware.

Hibs' victory
evens up the score between the two sides since the trophy was brought out of abeyance in 2004.

Hearts won the shield that year, and since then the title has alternated back and forth between the two clubs.

Last night's game was actually the tie held over from last season, so it may not be too long before Hearts have the opportunity to reclaim the shield, and Hibs the chance to defend it.

Fans in attendance last night will also be looking forward to a prompt rematch, so long as it comes close to matching the frenetic opening 20 minutes of last night's match. Hearts took the lead barely two minutes after kick-off.

Making their first foray into the Hibs half, Jonathan Stewart was fed the ball out on the right wing. He sent in a cross to the near post, which was misjudged by goalkeeper Flynn, who allowed the ball to continue on its path into the net.

Despite the early setback, Hibs were positive going forward, and found an equaliser in the 15th minute. Deane and Cropley worked the ball between them in front of the Hearts area, before the latter threaded the ball through to Byrne, who shrugged off his marker and beat the keeper from eight yards.

Two minutes later, though, Hearts were back in front. Ryan Wallace found himself in plenty of room on the edge of the box after getting the ball from Mackle and sent the ball underneath Flynn and into the net.

It didn't take Hibs long to get back on level terms for a second time. Twenty two minutes were on the clock when an excellent ball from Currie set up Byrne, who in turn finished well by lifting the ball over Ridgers.

With four good goals already scored, the cup final still delicately poised, and with only a quarter of the game played, the crowd at Easter Road were being treated to a match which was entertaining throughout. The teams, both composed largely of under-19 players, impressed with their open play and ability to pass the ball. The referee also played his part, allowing the game to flow freely as the action moved from one end to another. The second half eased down slightly in terms of pace, but neither club were shy to look for a winner.

Cropley missed a good chance in the 70th minute after dragging his shot wide from short range.

Currie then whipped a cross in from the left wing in the 83rd minute with the ball speeding across the six-yard line. Had a green-shirted player got a touch on the cross, a goal would surely have resulted.

Hibs maybe had more clear-cut chances to win the game in the second half, although Hearts created some decent chances down the right wing through Wallace, only for the Hibs' defence to snuff out the final delivery.

The visitors were also forced into making two substitutions due to injury.

As the clock ticked on towards 90 it looked as though extra time was looming. But, with just sixty seconds remaining, Byrne fired home from ten yards to complete his hat-trick and capture the win for Hibs.

The presentation of the trophy was made by John Greenhorn, secretary of the East of Scotland Football Association, which organises the competition.

Hibs: Flynn, Russell, Booth, Wotherspoon (Bell 62) Welsh, Hanlon, Johnston (Kelly 80) Dean, Byrne, Currie, Cropley. Subs not used: Grof, Welch, Smith.

Hearts: Ridgers, Stewart, Devine (Cowan 76) Taylor, Rapnik, Mackle, Mulrooney, Mearns, McGowan, Wallace, Husband. Subs not used: Banks, Wood, Love, McCallion.

Sounds like a good game... well done the wee hibbys and comiserations to the wee jambos... beter luck next year/6 months or so!

One point... how did Hearts get away with naming Stevey Banks on the subs bench???!

Jamboy,

Cheering up again somewhat 08/05/2008 11:54:43
Well done little Hibs.

Perhaps Banks applied some of Miko's blusher to make him look younger.

This was 3-2 going on 8-2 with the yams playing hoofball as per usual. We are so far ahead of them at every level nowadays - it's amazing where £38 million get you these days!!

#1 & #2, sporting comments...well done.

I think both teams have a good mix of youngsters coming through, which we all know is the future for both clubs.

Yup and meant too... Shame the same can't be said about #3

Good losers are one thing but bad winners are another altogether eh?

Great young players coming through the ranks at both clubs as far as i can see.

#1 Hearts "got away" with naming Banks because the game was under the control of the East Of Scotland F.A. Both teams, had they wished, could have played the first team squads but nowadays elect to play reserve sides, usually young lads who are just under reserve team standard and on the way up. It was an entertaining game and credit must go to the scorer of Hearts first goal which was a beaut. I got some funny looks from fellow Hibs fans for applauding it!

#3 You're the worst type of hobo there is.

Everything is in relation to us: your user name and your entire outlook on your club relates to us. A complete loser.

I have heard from both sides about last night and everyone said it was a decent game which hibs may possibly have deserved to win. Fair enough.

Hibees forever,

Portobello 08/05/2008 12:54:08
Well done the hibees!

It seems as if Kurtis Byrne could be the latest in a long line of very good strikers to come through the ranks, another very good prospect!!

Damon Gray getting nearer the first team and David Grof on the bench, future looking very good indeed!

#11 Sounds like a decent prospect and certainly had a big say in the result last night. Touch of deja vu reading "He sent in a cross to the near post, which was misjudged by goalkeeper Flynn, who allowed the ball to continue on its path into the net."

Plus ca change....

As we're discussing the kids here, does anyone know what actually happened with Elias Wagner? Obviously I know he was released by Hibs after claiming to be homesick and then signed for Hearts but does anyone know the circumstances?

Whatever happened to the annual derby Edinburgh cup or whatever it was which the first team players played in? Is this it or has that been scrapped or am I just imaginging this whole thing?
17

Iain Bhern,

#16, you may be thinking of the Festival Cup which I can only recall ever being competed for twice. I think the problem is scheduling the game to coincide with the Edinburgh Festival. It's not been possible for a couple of seasons because the SPL has had an early start and one or other of the clubs has had European commitments.

Cracking game between 2 sides who could not be separated in their previous meeting's. Hibernian however having the better of the play in the second half and overall deserving the victory on the night.

Both clubs look to have some very good youngsters coming through and it bodes well for the Capital clubs.

Only down side to the evening was the non attendance at the presentation by some of the Hearts officials and players. At least 7 of the squad stayed on the pitch to applaud the Hibs side being presented, the rest including Frail chose to disappear at that precise moment.
19

Jambo-ree,

08/05/2008 15:05:22
#18 - I'm reliably informed that Frail and the others wanted to make sure they got to the front of the crowds lining Easter Road for the open top bus tour....instead of which they found they'd joined the no.1 bus queue.
20

Iain Bhern,

#19, I'll tell it like it is. The Hibs coach went over and shook the Hearts coach's hand and he (the Hearts coach) obviously wasn't happy about something as he started arguing with the Hibs man and pointing his finger toward someone else at which point the Hibs coach walked off and left him. To his credit though the Hearts coach must have thought better of his actions and went over to the Hibs man and seemed to offer some sort of apology whereupon both men shook hands. No idea what the disagreement was as the game was played in a good spirit by both teams. I wonder though why Byrne wasn't booked for removing his shirt after scoring his third goal. Perhaps the ref decided against it as there had been no reason to book anyone else throughout the match, or if he did he wasn't using yellow cards!
21

GGTTH#1,

#17 that's the one! Would have been good to have that this year even it is just an excuse for one more derby!

Jambo-ree,

#21 Seem to remember other clubs being involved in the East of Scotland Shield in the distant past - Berwick Rangers (remember losing to them!) and maybe Vale of Leithen?

#15. If you are still reading this thread re: Wagner. He started for Hearts reserves last week in the 3-3 with Rangers reserves. To be honest, he didn't look very good then suffered an injury which ended his game not long before half-time.

#15 & #23. Beg your pardon, I was at two reserve games against the old firm last week and got mixed up, it was actually the 1-0 win against Celtic that Wagner played. Doh!

Really impressive display from the Hearts Youth Players.

They didn't even bother to stay on the park long enough to see the Hibees lift the shield.

Only SEVEN players from Hearts had the good sportsmanship to applaud their opponents. Not one of the coaching staff hung around either. What a disgrace.

I wouldn't let my under 12's team display that sort of petulant crap. Utter disgrace.

Glorious Hearts,

#29 If you came on here every week to complain about Paatelainen's petulance then I might have sees your views here as being fairly well balanced and thought out. After all, he's the main man at your club and his actions in the dug-out set a very bad example to anyone, let alone under 12s.

I'm not defending the Hearts' staff's actions by the way, just pointing out that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

#29 BTW how many hibs players stayed on the field to applaud the victors after THAT Hampden semi-final 2 years ago? How many actually turned up in the first place? :D
