Published Date: 17 July 2008
THE "mystery" goalkeeper fielded by Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen against Raith Rovers was today revealed as New Zealand-based Phil Imray.
The English-born star is currently four days into a two-week trial with the Easter Road outfit as Paatelainen seeks to bring in cover for Yves Ma-Kalambay, who will miss the start of the SPL season having been called into the Belgium squad for the Olympic Games in China.

Although the 24-year-old admitted he didn't have his best game at Stark's Park on Tuesday night – rating his performance as "okay" – he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw in which he was joined by fellow trialists Joe Keenan and an un-named French defender.

And Paatelainen, who refused to divulge the identity of any of the trialists on the night, insisted he had seen encouraging signs, saying: "The goalkeeper made some good saves, he came off his line well, his distribution was okay and he put in a good performance all round."

A move to the SPL would complete a footballing rags to riches story for Imray, who was born in Worcester before moving to New Zealand at the age of 16 to study at the Ole Soccer Academy.

Only a few weeks ago he was plying his trade for Porirua team Western Suburbs in the Wellington-based Central League club competition.

Imray's visit to Scotland has been helped by the contacts of former Scotland and Celtic goalkeeper Jonathan Gould, now New Zealand's Olympic team assistant coach.

He said: "It has been a dream of mine, for a while, to play professionally over here, I've just got to make sure I try and raise my game while I'm here."

Imray admitted, however, that the difference in standard between Western Suburbs and Hibs was "staggering".

He said: "It's a massive step up, everyone is quality here and it's a lot more physical."

Although little-known outside Wellington, Imray shot to prominence as Western Suburbs lifted the 2006 Chatham Cup by saving three penalties in a final shoot-out against Eastern Suburbs.

Imray played in the NZFC last season for Team Wellington, captaining them at times and is said to be the top goalkeeper in the league, right up there with the likes of Wellington Phoenix stoppers Glen Moss and Mark Paston, who compete for the No.1 slot in the national side.

However, Imray is not pinning all his hopes on Hibs. He said: "I'm going to try and pick up a contract over here and, if it doesn't work out at Hibs, I'll try somewhere else. This is my first stop and it's a pretty big club. It's a pretty big step up so, if it doesn't work out here, maybe I'll try and drop down a level or two."

Meanwhile, a Hibs XI, made up mostly of youth players, will face Forfar Athletic at Station Park tonight (kick-off 7.45 pm).

Final confirmation that Mixu is clueless.

We have 3 mediocre goalies to step in for Maka (another one by the way).

Good rehash of a story on hibs fans sites YESTERDAY from NZ webpage by the way.

He is utter pi5h, No1 I agree Mixu's eye for talent spotting is seriously worrying! I was at Starks park on tuesday, the guy had no positional sense, he flapped at cross's and is kick-out's where shocking.

cany say i agree. wen mixu took over our best player was makalamby. no doubt he had a shaky start to his hibs career but the couple months before he got injured he was outstanding.

No.8 - what you have to remember is that we had these keepers last season as well and still finished above you.

Hearts look like they will be even worse next season and thats before I take into account Adolf Goulash being in charge of you!!

Regards and my apologies for making you look even more of a monkey

whats the deal with Grof? i've never seen him play for Hibs but hes been there for years - is he on a par with our other calamity stricken keepers?

surely somebody older is required as Maka and McNeil can be decent keepers but we've seen some costly howlers but there still young - bring back budgie!!

From what I've heard he was shaky at Raith. We need decent players who have proven themselves, not amateurs. What's happened to all the pro's that are getting towards the end of their careers? That's what we need - we've enough clueless wee laddies who will run all day, what we need is quality and experience.

The difference in class was evident when we watched Willand, the Swedish international no 2 keeper playing for Elfsberg. He was solid and at around 6ft 2'' he dominated his goal area. That's the kind of keeper that Hibs need. Dundee Utd found a good experienced keeper for the first half of last season and he gained then about 6 or 9 extra points before he moved on in January. He was Polish I think and was really good.

#4 - Spot on. The big laddie had a shaky start but really came onto a game. Until he was injured, Maka was performing to a consistently high standard. Remember, all keepers make mistakes from time to time - Cech in the Euros springs to mind.

And then there was Eduardas Kurskis. Sorry, just a wee reminder to the Yams that people in glass houses.......

What is it with Hibs and goalkeepers???

When was the last time we had a decent one? Goram, Budgie and Leighton are the standards we should be setting, not this shower we currently have.

Forget Hearts or anyone else for that matter. The current squad at Easter Road with a few exceptions are mediocre at best, which is why, if you are really honest with yourselves, you just know we will have a mediocre season... It's just the way it goes.

Motherwell and Dundee United will, I predict, both will finish above us this season.

We are in decline, and have been since TM departed. It’s just a fact

I was going to come on here, make a few smart-ass comments about the Hibs but I can't be bothered, our lot are just as p!sh as yours, so what's the point. I'm sure you're not looking forward to another season of subserviance to the Old Firm as much as me. You've got no goalkeepers, we've got no goalscorers, you've got a turd for a manager, we've got a lunatic for an owner, still, sigh! onwards and upwards - top six for us, Scottish cup for y''' na let's not go there.

The article in yesterdays Wellington's Dominion Post

C'mon Hardie - if your going to rip a article straight from another source, at least give them credit.

Fred Woodcock, the Dom Post journo puts a lot of time & effort in to support football in a country that's massively focused on Rugby.
