MIXU PAATELAINEN today looked ahead to Hibs' InterToto clash with Elfsborg – but admitted that ensuring his players are fully fit for the SPL kick-off remains his priority.
The Easter Road outfit take on Elfsborg in the Capital on Sunday afternoon before travelling to Sweden for the away leg a week on Saturday.

The InterToto format was changed in recent years to allow successful clubs to qualify for the UEFA Cup but, while Paatelainen would love to see his side progress in Europe, he insisted that the league is his main focus: "It's a big match for us this weekend, but the InterToto is also part of our pre-season. Of course, we will be taking the match very seriously but it is also part of our preparation for the new SPL season, that's the main thing. The league is the bread and butter for us and it is important that we do well in that competition first and foremost this season.

"If we are successful over a couple of games in the InterToto then it would be great because it would mean entry to the UEFA Cup qualifiers. But at the end of the day, everything is geared up for the start of the new campaign on August 9."

And, with just a couple of weeks of training under their belts, Paatelainen urged supporters to show some patience with his side this weekend.

He believes it will take at least a couple of competitive matches before his side's levels of fitness and sharpness return to their peak, and he added: "When the game kicks off on Sunday we will still be very early in our preparation and we will not be at a stage where we are ready to play our best football. We will give it our best shot, but we need to realise that we still have some way to go in terms of sharpness, fitness and passing.

"You always find at this stage of pre-season that you are very rusty and that things are maybe just not coming off for you.

"The supporters will maybe have to be a bit patient with us and their backing will be very important to us, we need their support. We will really need a couple of matches under our belts before we are anywhere near to playing our best football.

"We have a great set of fans and I am sure that they will turn out in their numbers for the game and get right behind us."

And, while he will continue to work behind the scenes on the possibility of bringing some new faces to the club in time for Sunday's match, he admitted that making signings in time for the start of the SPL campaign is the priority. "Obviously there are players that I would like to bring to the club and it would be great if we were successful on that front before the weekend, but everything is taking time and the SPL kick off at the beginning of August is our target for that as well.

"Not too much has happened over the last week or two, but clubs are now getting back to business so we are hoping that we will be able to get things moving over the next few days."

I wonder if it will affect turnout if Hibby Andy Murray is in the Wimbledon final?

A couple of moves yesterday with Nicholson leaving Aberdeen and Burton O'Brien joining up at Falkirk.

Hopefully things will indeed start to move now that out of contract players are just that!

I wish though that Mixu would talk about this game in a similar manner to the way in which the Barca game seems to be getting talked up. This one is surely WAY more important in terms of possible revenue than a training match against some Spanish prima donnas for which Hibs will apparently get an appearance fee and that's it!

Fair enough there will be a lack match fitness on sunday but, there should never be any excuses for not being able to perform the basic's i.e. tackling, passing, crossing and shooting. Footballer's are paid a pretty penny to be good at their job! You would never hear tradesman who has been on the sick for a few weeks say....Oh my work might be a wee bit rusty or shoddy! If they did then they deserve the Ruud Gullit.

I wish I'd known that the Intertoto held no importance for Hibs before I bought a ticket.

Jim is quite correct. This is by far the most important of the pre-season games and Mixu should stop getting his excuses in early. The best I saw Hibs play last season was against Middlesborough and Bolton so lets have no more talk about getting better after some games. It didn't happen last season.

this tourney has and always has been a waste of time for us. the 3 times we've played in it now we've only had 1 week to prepare, which is just not enough. So, like Vetra and Odense, this will end in defeat. Dont get too hot and bothered when it happens. Elfsborg are a VERY good outfit. Good luck Hibs though.

No. 4, i hear what your saying. Funny how Tony M didnt think the Intertoto was quite so insignificant. Mixu had better try his best and pass that on to his starting 11 on Sunday. End of the day though, it really is all about day 1 in the SPL and gettin fitness etc spot on.

Can anyone tell me why a team who have represented their country in the Champions League fairly recently had to start the competition one round earlier than teams from Scotland, Wales and Ireland?

Elfsborg? When did they do that? They were in the UEFA Cup group stages last season if that's what you mean?

And it's down to country co-efficients. A Welsh side was playing an Irish side at the weekend (Bohemians beat Rhyl 9-3 on aggregate) just past. Bohemians will be playing an Icelandic side in the next round, and the winners of that will play either Hibs or Elfsborg for qualification to the UEFA Cup.

I dont see the negativity people have about this competition. It is bascally just 2 UEFA Cup qualifying rounds. Next year that is exactly what is replacing it. I wonder if people will complain then.

Is it becouse the 'Intertoto Cup' is such a stupid name?

#10 aye Lenny, and some people get to call it the inter-tattie cup to prove how witty they are.

Personally I'm concerned about the distinct LACK of inward transfer activity and rumours of Lewis and Fletch being off-ski. It could be a very long season...

SSH

I am concerned too. But to be honest I would rather we took our time and bought 2 or 3 quality players than the shedloads of nonsense JC bought last season. I imagine that is a bit of the problem, some of these players will proably have to be moved on.

Was dissapointed Nicholson went down south, I thought he would be perfect in the Hibs team.
13

SouthSideHibs,

01/07/2008 14:37:32
Nicholson was out of our wage bracket... but agreed a decent player.

I also agree that last season JC and TC went on a shopping spree and with hindsight demonstrated that neither of them could pick a player. Personally I don't think any of JC's outfield picks are worth keeping and Mixu has already moved a few on.

Just got my 3 tickets, Elfsburg, 'Boro and Wigan for £20. Well done Hibs on the sensible pricing. We are underdogs no doubt but as long as we give at a decent go I'll be happy.

Sounds like Mixu is planning for defeat and making excuses in advance.

Links Green. What are you saying? That Hibernian FC, the club that taught Brazil how to play football. That were invited to take part in th European Cup because their fame had spread world wide. That were the world champions. That have a European pedigree longer than your arm. Your saying that we are underdogs to a team that plays in the equivalent of our Div 1.

Are you serious? Hibs will win comfortably and you should know this. Why don't you ban yourself from these threads until you learn something about the club you purport to support. Underdogs indeed!!

I wont be happy if we give it "A decent go". I'll be happy when we reach at least the final of the Uefa Cup.

You will never be happy then.
Never mind you may win the Scottish cup this season for consolation.

#18 I'm already happy savouring the prospect. You know, winning the SC would be a bit of a disappointment given that I've waited over 60 years for them to win and some teenage whippersnapper would get to see it. It wouldn't be fair.

I think I'm joking but now that I mention it...!

Personally I hope Hibs manage to win this one and get through to the UEFA proper.

1) Because I always want Scottish teams to do as well as possible, especially Edinburgh ones.

2) ...and secondly because IF they do get through there's an outside chance that they'll get drawn in the UEFA against Depor if THEY get through too.

So I'll actually be able to get to a home game against Hibs this year - cause at the moment I'm not planning to be putting in any appearances at Tynie until Our Lord Vlad the Truly Mad has either:

a) Shuffled off his Mortal Coil - in a Hearts ownership sense.

or

b) Undergone the most profound Damascus Moment ever - even putting old Saul going very Paulish into the shade!!!

Cause I've got a horrible feeling that nothing less than divine intervention is going to make things improve at my spiritual home.

Ach well, I'll be off home to enjoy watching more coverage of the Spanish team still jumping about like a bunch of loonies - great stuff!!!

...and Hibs at the Riazor THAT would be very nice too!!!

I am so sorry.
Have been bantering with the young and forgetting about some of the older fans whose heart is probably more than theirs is.
I have been lucky. Stood on the base of the horse at the fut of the bridges in 56 and watched the bus go by with the cup.
Twice more but viewed from afar.
Really hope you get to see it one day.
Makes all the debts seem worthwhile, after all we have paid our due its up to others now
