Fairs Cup, second round
November 29, 1967
MOST people had already written Hibs off when Napoli arrived in Edinburgh for the second leg of their Fairs Cup tie.
Colin Stein had scored an away goal in Italy, but Hibs had gone into the return leg at Easter Road trailing 4-1 to a side sitting top of Serie A.
An early goal from Bobby Duncan gave the Hibees a glimmer of hope when, with just five minutes gone, he lashed in a shot from 25 yards that caught Italian legend Dino Zoff off his line and soared high into the net.
That goal sparked Hibs to life and they doubled their lead just a minute before half-time when Stein's shot was blocked and rebounded into the path of Pat Quinn, who kept a cool head to slot home.
The Italians sent on an extra defender, Girardo, at the break but they couldn't prevent Hibs adding a third goal in 67 minutes when Alex Scott's corner was met by Peter Cormack, who had risen well above the Italian defenders to head into the net.
With the Hibs players and fans on a high they added another minutes later when Pat Stanton stooped to beat Zoff with a precision low header.
Napoli were reduced to ten men when Girardo was sent off for kicking Stevenson and their misery was compounded when Hibs secured their place in the next round with 11 minutes left, Stein meeting Eric Stevenson's cross ball to make it five.
Goal hero Cormack, who helped Hibs become the first Scottish team in eight attempts to master Italian opposition in a two-leg contest, revealed: "We had lost heavily in the first leg and, when we came back to Scotland, I don't think anyone really gave us a chance of going through.
"Most people had written us off but we played really well, everything that we tried came off and we got a few goals as well.
"The thing that turned the match in our favour was the fact that we managed to get two early goals back and went in at half-time with some real hope that we might be able to do something to turn it around – or at least give them a run for their money. At the end of the game the scoreline maybe flattered us a bit but we were well worth the win, we had put everything into it.
"It's a game I will remember for a long, long time. I was fortunate enough to play in a lot of big games in my career, the win over Napoli was a great highlight for me."
