Published Date: 30 June 2009
JOHN HUGHES today revealed how new signing Patrick Cregg believes he's in for the long haul at Easter Road despite signing only a one-year contract.
The out-of-contract Falkirk midfielder became Hughes' first signing as he teamed up with his former manager again in Edinburgh, the Hibs boss predicting the Irish star will quickly win himself a new army of fans.

The former Arsenal kid was actuall
y offered a two-year deal by Hughes, a second season dependent on him making a certain number of appearances.

But Cregg turned it down, telling Hughes: "Come Christmas you'll be pulling me into your office wanting to tie me up again."

And that, Hughes insisted, was a measure of the "hunger and determination" burning within the former Bairns midfielder.

The Hibs boss said: "I like things to be incentive-based, I want to keep my players hungry as some get a contract and put the tools away.

"To be fair to Patrick, there was another year for him in terms of appearances made in his first season. But it was Patrick who said to give him a year because he believes that by Christmas I'll be wanting him to sign an extension, he has that hunger and determination in him."

Cregg himself was delighted to join forces with Hughes again and admitted that he can't wait to meet his new Hibs team-mates when they return for pre-season training later this week.

The player said: "I loved working with the gaffer at Falkirk, so to be joining him at a club the size of Hibernian is a great opportunity for me. I'm very excited about pre-season and can't wait to start work at the training centre this week with the rest of the boys."

And Hughes believes there's no better time for Cregg to be making the move to Easter Road, convinced the new challenge will inspire the 23-year-old to greater heights.

He said: "Look at his grounding, coming from Arsenal to Falkirk, an Irish Under-21 player. He's a fantastic football player, his ability isn't in doubt.

"He's a bundle of energy, someone with a great work ethic and a real will to win. He still has his flaws, he can head the ball better and sometimes he wants to go chasing but we just need to get him schooled the right way in terms of getting on the ball, playing his passes and dictating play.

"I'm in no doubt the stage at Easter Road will see him kick on again. I see him coming here as a natural progression.

"I also feel we are a bit short on the right side of the park. We are overloaded with 'lefties,' Paul Hanlon, Ian Murray, Lewis Stevenson, Derek Riordan, Callum Booth, Alan O'Brien and John Rankin can all play there."

Hughes made his move for Cregg even though the Dublin-born player was out of the Bairns side for a spell last season, the Hibs boss convinced the manner in which he dealt with that disappointment was telling. He said: "He picked up a wee knock and Scott Arfield got himself into right midfield and did really well. We had Kevin McBride, Arnau Riera and Patrick all seeking that sitting midfield role and he found himself out of the team.

"But I watched him very closely. I felt something of a father figure to him. He'd been away from home as a kid going to Arsenal and then Falkirk and he needed a little bit of guidance. I saw him maturing. I watched to see how he'd handle being out of the side, if he'd do it the way I wanted. He always trained very well, he sometimes overstepped the mark and there would be a little bit of fisticuffs.

"However, that was only because he wanted to do so well. We just had to pull him back in and tell him his time would come again. But that's what I want, if players are not playing I want them to be angry and feel they have something to prove. I knew Patrick was available and I was delighted to get him. The fans will see he has that fire in his belly, that determination. He won't let anyone down, he lives his life right.

"The fans will take to him because they like a guy who is up for the cause. If his only fault is that we have to pull the reins in a bit at times then what a fault to have."

Good, an aggressive midfielder - could be just the job.

So long as he doesn't get sent off all the time.

In the battle of the free transfer midfield signings in Edinburgh, my betting is Paddy Cregg would boot Yam Black's jambo erky!

Refreshing stance for a player to take, comes across as confidence and a will to work hard/perform well. Good luck to the lad, hope he does well. Be interesting to see who lines up in midfield and the shape of the midfield come next season. If zouma added to the balance of Bamba, Murray, Cregg, O'brien, rankin, stevenson. Not sure how/who'd line up there at all, specially when you can put deeks on the left. Be interesting to see.

Cregg will hopefully be a decent signing but I cant say im exactly overjoyed. I think we've got a big enough squad as it is but we need a litte more quality over quantity, especially in midfield.

But a one year deal seems like a good idea tho, will of course give him the benefit of the doubt but if it doesnt work out then were not gonna be stuck with him. With Fletcher going we'll hopefully see some of that money coming in and Hughes will be able to clear out some of the dross and bring in a few more players with a new keeper surely the priority.

In fact anyone know whats happening with Mallo as that seems to have been rumbling on for weeks now?

I see the rodents have arrived, quick someone call Rentokill.

This new guy could be a good signing methinks, aggressive and bags of energy.

Bring on the derby!

Hearts have signed a runner up from Britains got Talent I see.
Next signing is Zippo the Clown, he will fit in perfectly with the circus commonly known as Hearts.

Mallo deal will be announced tomorrow if it is going to happen.

I am a bit concerned that the papers are also trying to tie McBride in to follow Hughes to Hibs - there are too many midfield players of average or less quality there already. What Hughes forgot to mention is that Currie has also joined the first team squad and he is a very strong left sided player.

I would be interested on opinions on who of the midfield players Hughes should keep and play from the following list. An incredible 14 players chasing 4 places in the team:

Murray, Thicot, Stevenson, Bamba, Currie, Cregg, Keenan, Rankin, Zemamma, Wilson, Welsh, Wotherspoon, O'Brien, Cropley.

Looking at the above, why would he also sign McBride with the young 18 year old supposedly also on his way from Everton.

10,

The importance of Zippo signing fro Hertz is fundamental.
Zippo, of course being a clown will have to wear makeup - which in his case makes the pre-requisite of mask wearing redundant.

Perhaps the entire Tynecastle players and fans should wear clown-like makeup, therefore the mask wearing should not be required.

In these temperate times ones face could get rather hot when wearing said mask, the Hearts players and fans may appreciate this insight.

A mask for all seasons, coming to Tynecastle.

#11 Cheers for the info, just thought it was odd Cregg was being announced today but not Mallo. Your right about McBride, would be worried if Yogi signed him but hopefully its all just paper talk. If he's going to bring players from Falkirk would like to see Arfield and Barr come in but maybe thats just wishful thinking, perhaps with some of the Fletcher money?

Apart from the young Everton guy Ive also heard a lot about Danyy Galbraith but that seems to have fizzled out. Looking at the list its clear we have far too many midfielders but saying that some of the younger guys might unfortunately not make it so maybe cant be relying on them too much. I would like to see Keenan go and maybe AOB but because we dont have any wingers maybe would be good to give him another shot. Also guys like Murray, Thicot, Bamaba and Welsh (I think?) could all be classified as defenders aswell.

Glad Fletch did not go to the lice carriers, I think we have enough strikers to cover. Over time, the youngsters may have a role to play and hopefully, Yogi will get some of the cash for the sale of Fletch, then again - maybe no.

There are some obvious misfits or players who will not make it. Keenan is one, I have no faith in O'Brien, Cropley has gone backwards and while Wilson is a neat player, he is much too small. Welsh is primarily a midfielder and is too small to play centre of defense where McCormack is surely ahead of him. Thicot is, to me, a bench reserve for centre of defense and if Jones goes, Bamba is likely to play central defense. Wotherspoon is a right winger as is Galbraith if he comes.

All this is either a problem for Hughes wih too big a squad, or he will see it as an opportunity to have a big choice to get the right blend.

Murray is suspended for (3 games??) ad might struggle to get in the team if it starts well.
26

Angus R,

30/06/2009 12:53:59
But Cregg turned it down, telling Hughes: "Come Christmas you'll be pulling me into your office wanting to tie me up again."

Is this a new motivational tactic?

I have to say, the level of wit used on either side is childish but more importantly, unfunny.Lets face it, at this time of year the most mundane, trivial and ininspiring news is stretched further than it usually would be. Im dissapointed that Hughes seems to be targeting below average domestic players. At least shabba is going further afield where its more likely you would find a hidden gem.

Good post, tbh I dont know much about the young players coming into the squad as I only really read about the U-19s towards the back end of last season and havent seen any of them play but im really looking forward to seeing what they can do. If even 2 or 3 become established first team players then that'll be great.

The only issue I have with squad size is that as you say, too many average players or misfits whose wages could be better spent in other areas where we need strengthening but Yogi will obviously have to assess the squad and decide whose worth holding onto, im sure we'll see some players being released or allowed to move on before the end of August. Whatever happens, im really looking forward to seeing what the team looks like come the first game of the season.
