HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today revealed he's made the first move to strengthen his squad for next season by snapping up St Mirren star David Van Zanten on a three-year deal.
Van Zanten, 26 tomorrow, is out of contract at Love Street at the end of the season but has agreed to join Hibs. The Irishman, however, has already played his last game for the Buddies as he recovers from keyhole surgery on a torn knee cartilage.

Paatelainen knows Van Zanten, who was once on Celtic's books, well having been a player/coach in Paisley and believes Hibs will see the best years of the defender's career.

He said: "I know exactly the type of player we are getting. David has done well at St Mirren, he was club captain over the last year or so which tells you a lot. I know him from my time at Love Street and it is important for me to have players in the dressing room who are positive, hard-working, honest guys.

"I hope the Hibs fans will enjoy his talents. He is a good age and I feel his best playing days are ahead of him. He is already a relatively experienced player but there is still room to develop.

"David is a very honest worker, he is sharp, he is a good defender, he can pass the ball well and although he is not massively big he has a good spring. He can play in various positions, I've seen him play at full-back, centre-half and in midfield.

"He has good energy levels, he's quick and he can cross the ball. I am looking to improve the quality of the squad and I feel David will be a good addition."

And while he admitted it was a wrench to leave St Mirren – Saints having rescued him from the soccer scrapheap after boss Gus MacPherson spotted him playing in a trial match for out-of-contract players following his release from Celtic – Van Zanten revealed how he jumped at the chance to sign a pre-contract deal with Hibs.

He said: "I've had five great years at St Mirren with a lot of great memories – winning the First Division title and staying in the SPL.

"In that time I learned a lot from the gaffer, too. But Hibs sold itself. It's always a worrying time when you're out of contract but when Hibs came in for me it wasn't a difficult decision, to be honest.

"It's a step up going to a big club with a big stadium but once they were interested I wanted to go there straight away.

"It's an exciting challenge and I'm looking forward to playing my part. They'll obviously have targets for next year and now I'm hoping they land the European place."

Meanwhile, Chris Hogg's chances of facing Celtic on Sunday continue to improve with the defender having resumed training with his team-mates for the first time since damaging knee ligaments against St Mirren at the start of last month.

The East of Scotland Shield match between Hibs and Hearts, held over from last season, will take place at Easter Road tonight with both clubs expected to field youthful reserve teams. Admission is £4 adults, £2 concessions.

Beginning to worry about quality - signings from Inverness, Gretna & St Mirren will not replace £2 - £4.5m players

#2 Get used to it mate. That's your level now. Think yourself lucky you're not a Hearts supporter. We've got millionaire players that play like Gretna/Inverness/St. Mirren rejects.

Decent enough signing IMO. always looked a good enough player when playing against us. And if it means Gathuessi will be on his way then its got to be a good thing!

#4, he hasn't 'got' Yantorno. He has offered to let the player use the medical facilities at the training centre on condition that we get first refusal when the player recovers and is ready to sign for a new club. He is currently a free agent having been made redundant by Gretna.

#2 Where did those million pound players come from? Lower clubs or the youth team. Nothing wrong with getting good buys that don't cost the earth.

Can't say I can rate this boy too highly but a lot said that about Murray as well and he is now a top squad player.
The fact that him and Yantorno are injured is worrying but there is no way Petrie would have them on the books unless full recoveries are on the horizon. Hopefully this will be another decent signing from the UK who is proven unlike the gash that JC and monkey heed threw into the team. Would like to see more out of contract Juve and Real players putting an X beside their name though instead of P!sh bottom 6 feeder clubs. Talking of feeder clubs:-

Heard Kingston is away

#8 Precisely well aware of products from youth team but how do McCann, Stevenson, McCormack, Lynch Campbell get a look in when sub standard players like Zarabi,Canning, Rankin,Gatheussi, O'Brian and Donaldson are cluttering up the squad. The youngsters have proved they can cope with help from seasoned players like Murray,Hogg,Nish,Zemmama etc. Also would not class the likes of Coventry (Thomson)Southhampton (McNeil) as lesser clubs.

#18 Entitled to your opinion - For the record definitely not a jambo or hungover. ER season ticket holder for "possibly" more years than you have been on the planet and a Hi-bee for 50 years. Canning has also sold goals this season that have cost us vital points that might ultimately cost us UEFA place (Aberdeen & Motherwell). In my opinion not good enough. Not expecting youngsters to play full season but space must be created to be able to give them fair crack at breaking through as Riordan, O'Connor, Thomson,Whittaker etc were given. Since Mixu has taken over he has limited youngsters chances and brought in players with very debatable quality.
19

Who's it gonna be? ,

07/05/2008 13:37:15
Yantorno has not given a solid yes publicly as to whether he will sign for Hibs and Hibs have also not tied themselves to a contract with an injured player. That sounds like good business to me. If he recovers well then Mixu can turn the screw on him-
You were here using our facilities and we payed for your rehabilitation so the least you can do is sign for a season. Maybe.

There again, I dont know if he is that good. Could he replace Boozy? Probably not as I think Yantorno is more of a Zemamma pop up from no where and take on 3 defenderstype of player.

Kerr, o brian and Gufftootsi all need to be shown the door. How long has Benji got left on his contract?

Basic facts here.

We have sold some extraordinary talent in the past few seasons.

The money made in these transfers will not be used for like-for-like replacements (ie. we will not be buying a £4.5m replacement for Scott Brown).

However, Hibs got Murphy & Hogg from English reserve team football, Sproule from semi-pro in NI, Jones from the lower leagues in England, Canning from Gretna, need I go on.

It is not where they have come from, it is how they perform for Hibs that count.

Too many fans have made up their minds about signings before really seeing the guys play.

By the same token, Kerr & O'Brien have both been capped.
21

Mibo,

07/05/2008 13:49:46
#22 Good point - Don't think anyone expects like for like replacements but signing £100,000 players or free transfers is not in my opinion the way forward, better to concentrate and encourage the youth (with better wages) which has worked in the recent past to great effect. This approach now seems to be less of an option.A number of the signings in the last three years in the £100,000 category have simply not performed for Hibs.

Van Zanten is a good signing. Mixu is right to bring the lad in because Gattheusi and McCann are not the answer.

This arguement only goes round in circles. All teams at every level make signings based up the opinion of the manager and coaching staff and some are successes and some are not. I happen to be of the opinion that Canning is a good squad player while, having seen a lot of him in reserve football, don't rate McCormack - not so far anyway. However, you are correct in that a team like Hibs, who will never sign £1.0 or £2.0 million pound players are as well to make out of contract signings if they want experienced players as paying out £100,000 for equally ordinary players. I would assess the players Hibs have purchased or paid big compensation for as follows:

Rob Jones: Generally a success for his defensive strength in the air.

Zemmama: A super little player on his game. Needs to turn it on more often but is doing it under Mixu.

John Rankin: To me, inferior to the likes of Stevenson.

Colin Nish: Can be good and a threat to opposing defences. Needs to get his head sorted out. Is no Didier Drogba!

Alan O'Brien: This is where opinion was totally wrong (Tommy Craig). Is now an expensive white elephant.

Makalambay: Generally a good signing despite the occasional boob ealier in the season. Still only 21 years of age.

SIGNINGS BY MIXU:
Murray: Good for the squad with 100% committment
Canning: Big and good central defender.
Zarabi: Shaky and not a success so far. Can play centre half constructively.
Rankin: This Donald Park recommendation is too weak defensively.
Colin Nish: Can look very good but conversely at times looks very bad.

Van Zantan has progressed well with St Mirren and should be a good signing. However, he will inhibit the further development of Kevin McCann.

What mistakes did Canning make at Aberdeen and Motherwell?

I understand your point about giving youth a chance and agree to some point but you cant expect that bandwagon just to roll up season after season we need players with experience aswell

Some Hibs fans are priceless.

Didn't St Mirren beat hibs TWICE?
Didn't Yantorno score against Hibs?

At least give these guys a chance before you write them off. Everyone was lauding John Collins' wonderful signings.

Now Kerr gets panned, O'Brien gets panned, Morais gets panned, Gathuessi gets panned, Joneleit came and went without hardly a whisper. Curier got panned.

Ma-Kalamby is arguably the only decent one amongst them it seems and even he gets it from the fans at times.

Hibs could sign Christiano Ronaldo and some of the fans would have issues with it!

Hibees forever,

I have been wanting Hibs to take this approach for a while now. Look at what rangers and celtic have done, they have taken the best players from the clubs below them, (i.e. hibs, hearts, dundee united, motherwell, aberdeen). They therefore weaken the opposition and strengthen their team at the same time.

I have been saying for ages why dont we do this but on a smaller scale? Go round Killie, inverness, st mirren, gretna, falkirk and try to take their top players. Weakening them and strengthing us at the same time.

Be interesting where we might strengthen now though, right back was the obvious choice. Both keepers are playing well, right back (van zanten, mccann) centre halfs (hogg, jones, canning and murray can fill in), left back (he's just signed zarabi, got hanlon, stevenson, again murray can play there), holding role, (boozy, chisholm, murray), right mid (morais and deano), left mid (rankin and stevenson), attacking mid (zemmama, pos yantorno), strikers (fletch, nish, benji, campbell, gray).

Pretty decent squad but really not sure where he will try strengthen, to me left mid looks most likely, and maybe holding role if boozy goes.

#28 Hibs Forever

Spot on there with your observations. I would agree that holding midfield role and left midfield could be addressed for the coming season. The midfield, while skilled, is just too lightweight at the moment and when we are not on the attack, players like Rankin and Zemmama just get brushed aside.

There are a couple of promising youngsters on the way, not Thomsons, Riordons or Browns, but need to be developed with some first team exposure. Difficult to do that when the pool is clogged up with the likes of Kerr, O'Brien and Donaldson and to a lesser extent the likes of Morais.

Generally agree with Mibo.

I take on board we prejudging but I do not think these type of signings are the answer, having said that mixu had to bring in guys short term to bolster the side.
The best untried signings were from England, Murphy Hogg Jones .. even Antonio Murray was ok til he got injured.....and all relatively young.. they are always going to be better than your average scottish player, witness this Davis bloke at Rangers .... overnight sensation up here couldnt get a game down there ....

As I said they did a job, but I have no faith in Nish Rankin Zarabi .... I can see Canning is a handy guy to have around and Murray was a sensible piece of business but was hardly great managerial judgement....

As for you guys that think the midfield is ok.... I would have the lot of them out... apart from Zemama. That is where we need to concentrate out efforts

The players we've signed since TM left have been, basically, dire. Collins and Craig will have claimed at interview time that they had a 'network of contacts' and a 'big book of transfer targets'.

What has become very apparent is that neither of them could find or pick a player.

I think it's no coincidence that Levein and McGhee can do both, whilst also motivating and organising a team too.

I'd only keep Maka, the rest of them can all leave. Better a Van Zanten than another Gatheussi.
