Hibs boss warns suspended trio as replacements shine

MIXU PAATELAINEN today warned his suspended stars they can't expect to walk straight back into the side after watching Hibs keep their UEFA Cup hopes alive with a battling draw against Rangers.
The Easter Road club will head west on Sunday to face the other half of the Old Firm knowing yesterday's stalemate in Edinburgh will only have sent Celtic's hopes of retaining the SPL title soaring with Gordon Strachan's side now seven points clear, although Rangers have three games in hand.

Paatelainen will have striker Colin Nish, midfield ace Guillaume Beuzelin and right-back Thierry Gathuessi all available again after they sat out the clash with Rangers because of suspension.

But today the Hibs boss admitted he'd been thrilled by the performances of their replacements: Ross Campbell, who made his first start of the season, Ross Chisholm and Kevin McCann, who returned after a 13-match absence. Now Paatelainen has seven days to ponder over his team for Celtic Park, although he insisted he'd have no hesitation in throwing the youngsters in again.

He said: "I was really pleased, the boys have done tremendously well in training and in the reserve matches. I've seen the way they've handled themselves in every situation. They are great young players but obviously I can only pick 11 at a time, the team I feel will do the job in specific games."

Paatelainen acknowledged he'll have greater options this weekend with the availability of Nish, Beuzelin and Gathuessi while Brian Kerr and Alan O'Brien took a place on the bench yesterday following lengthy injury lay-offs.

He said: "We'll have more players available again which is great, there might be changes, there might not. It's the same kind of situation for me before every game."

The point Hibs gained pulled them closer to Motherwell and Dundee United, both of whom lost at the weekend, although Paatelainen insisted the Fir Park outfit, with two games in hand, remain in pole position for third place and he warned not to discount Aberdeen who have hauled themselves into the fringes of the race.

But in conceding as much, Paatelainen was equally adamant Hibs' hopes of a place in next season's UEFA Cup remain very much alive. He said: "It's still on. If Motherwell manage to win their games in hand then they'll deserve third place.

"Their remaining fixtures are difficult, but we have to concentrate on our matches. We'll be going to Celtic Park looking for a victory, but, of course, it won't be easy. They are the champions and they have done well recently.

"They came under a lot of pressure when Rangers took the lead and appeared to be running away a bit. Celtic have played more games, but they now have a comfortable lead and Rangers know they cannot afford any slip-ups.

"All credit to Celtic, they have performed under pressure and, like Rangers, they have world-class players. But on our day we are capable of beating anyone."

The East of Scotland Shield final between Hibs and Hearts, which was held over from last season, will take place on Wednesday at 7:30pm when both clubs are expected to field youthful reserve sides.

Only the lower tier of the West Stand will be open with Hibs fans occupying the north end and Hearts supporters the south. Season tickets are not valid.

Surely McCann will keep his place ahead of bombscare Thiery? Chissy got himself in good positions, it was just his composure that let him down. Never really seen that much of Campbell, most of his work was done in his own half and rarely got the chance to show his credentials as a striker.

For Celtic I would swap Campbell for Nish, keep the same as before.

While admitting that the defence is generally a lot more solid with Ian Murray at left full back, we need a ball winner in midfield. I don't mind Chisholm there as he is competitive and tries to be constructive. I would not bring Beuzelin back. His form has been abismal this season and he is well off the pace. For Celtic park next week I would have 2 changes. Nish in with Campbell dropping to the bench and Murray into midfield with one of the 2 recognised left full backs coming in. I don't think we get enough from Rankin but there is always the possibility of him getting forward into a scoring position so it looks like Chisholm back to the bench with Morais and Shiels keeping their places in midfield.

Good effert by the whole team yesterday. Having watched Celtic on Saturday, Jones and Canning better take the field against Celtic wearing protective face mask as JVH was all elbows and arms across his opponents' faces when he jumps.

Replacements shine? Don't think so! Chisholm 5 out of 10, Campbell 5 out of 10, and McCann 5.5 out of ten.

For a team challenging for 3rd place there was a lot of empty seats yesterday.

#4: Generally agree, BUT, McCann must be a better option than Gathuessi, he is a serious liability!!

#6. A creditable draw against the UEFA Cup finalists and you think the youngsters were out of their depth? Jeez, you're a hard man to please!

Was that the third weekend in a row that Hibs had the opportunity to go to third place in the league? And missed each time?
"Paatelainen will have striker Colin Nish, midfield ace Guillaume Beuzelin and right-back Thierry Gathuessi all available again" Surely we have seen the last of Boozy? His contract, I believe is up this summer, and he has been poor this year. If we're lucky, maybe he will take Gateussi with him.
Third place? - Lets just look forward to the Intertoto cup!

You lot were mince! go on come back to me about the JT's being in the bottom six, listen I know we're bad, no we're utter rubbish! but you lot honestly believe you've got a good side, come out the clouds guy's
Rangers were a tired looking lot and were there for the taking and you never threatened, you maybe had a lot of the ball, but you never threatened, except for some long range efforts.
Now here come's the abuse no doubt as you'll not be able to except the truth!

Iain Bhern,

I wouldn't say we were mince #13 but I'll admit that when we got to the final third we faffed about passing instead of having a go for goal but that's been the case most of the season. Passes don't produce goals, shots do!

why would anyone show anything other than pity for a jambo from loanhead, dont you have enough probs of your own, i for one would never admit being from loanhead, never mind being a jambo as well, but if you want the truth the only reason you or any other jambo come on here is that you know hearts are going down the tubes

Fair comment. looking forward to next season to having some banter on who's the best rather than who's the worst, but to be fair I don't have much of a argument this season!

Mixu is showing John Collins up - glad to see hibs taking points of the wee arra people.

The experienced hacking and hoofing of Ian Murray was actually what John Collins' team was missing. Mixu is clever enough to put the result before his image..

..but while JC was complaining about not having enough 'pover in midfield' he let a tiff with Mikey Stewart influence his team selection.

I don't remember many hibbies onhere complaining about it - they were too busy going on about hoboconomics and fast flowing flair football.

I think the most pleasing thing about the game was the fact that we got the ball on the deck and passed it very well indeed. Wee Fergie never got a sniff and Shiels was in particular a stand-out. I'm tempted to say we would have been more threatening if Nish had played however I think we are much more inclined to fire balls at his head when he plays so the passing would have suffered. It seems to be a double edged sword.

Still, despite our best efforts we're still in the hunt (just).

Although Hibs battled well yesterday & had some decent moves we still lack a cutting edge up front & in midfield . I would have dropped Fletcher to midfield & played Benji with possibly Donaldson up front . Although Campbell looks a good prospect thats all he is at the moment & didn't really get a sniff . The same could be said of Chisholm how was caught in posession several times yesterday & could have cost us . Still think we've blown it for 3rd & would need a minimum of 4 points from our last 2 games & 3 of those from the Well game . Seriously think we need another 4 players for next season ( spend some money ??? ) & we all know who should be told to get to Donald Duck !

Well well, what can i say about the BIG team? At best, they were s***e. And as for this massive support they keep on bleating and bleating about. Where were they tonight? Must have been about 300 to 400 there.
