Published Date: 18 July 2008
HEARTS manager Csaba Laszlo will hold discussions with Uganda midfielder David Obua after the player arrived in Edinburgh this morning.
Obua has recently been on trial at West Ham United but is keen to consider all options after leaving the South African club Kaiser Chiefs on freedom of contract. He is hankering after a move to Europe and Laszlo remains an admirer from his time as national coach of Uganda.

It is not yet clear whether Obua, who can also operate in defence, would qualify for a UK work permit but Laszlo and Hearts officials will examine that possibility during their discussions. The club would first have to confirm with FIFA that he had played 75 per cent of competitive international matches for Uganada during the last two years.

The 24-year-old flew into Edinburgh to meet his former coach and tour Hearts' facilities at both Tynecastle and Riccarton.

"We have arrived in Scotland and we will meet the manager for some talks," said Janos Hrutka, Obua's agent. "There is not much more we can say at the moment. There may be more to say after the discussions with Mr Laszlo and the work permit is something we must talk about."

Jeeeeez... I am not sure I can take much more of this sort of thing you know?

Is it just me or are we actually having a normal, traditional, good old fashioned pre-season?

Manager talking to the press about realistic goals and through the media conveying his thoughts to the fans and now... drum roll... Linked with players.

Oh well there is a long way to go and I remember the hassle with Gogita Gogua but at least we are identifying targets... Think I better lie down...

Jamboy do we not already have 4 midfielders that can defend ! !!!!!!! That is the problem with our team we are too defensive & it has been obvious for a while I do like the noises laszlo is makeing but surely our first potential signing a defensive midfielder doesnt set the heather a light im afraid . Do you not agree ?

Yes we have a a lot of defence minded midfielders but we still seemed to be playing Zaliukas as a sitting midfielder the last couple of seasons, perhaps Csaba doesn't think they are good enough.

I like Eggy and Ruben and think they fill that role rather well but I think maybe Stewart or one of them might be moved on.

As much as i like the players mentioned above can either of them play in defence? I wonder if we are going to see some players in different roles this season.

I would expect we are looking at strikers and the much missed box to box midfielder that we have missed since Hartley's departure but in the short term players who can fill different roles can only help.

When we had just appointed Csaba as manager, there was a piece on the BBC website where they interviewed the BBC Africa Football Correspondent. It's gone now, I just checked, but he was saying that Obua was a 'flying winger' who played for Kaiser Chiefs... so don't be surprised if, yet again, our good ol' friends at Scotsman/EN have got it wrong again...

I hope you are correct with your first paragraph .
But if you want to sell season tickets surely the best way is to bring in a decent name first & build from there ?
I am clinging onto the hope that Larry is our box to box midfielder I feel he is at his best through the middle & not lost out on the wing .

I think he has played well both on the right and as a box to box player... Trouble has been that when he was played on the right we were devoid of any creativity from anyone else in the middle... Stewart needs to give us a good season this year or the jury may return with a less than favourable verdict.

Strange thing is between Driver, Larry, Ruben and Jonsson we have a fair bit of talent in midfield but we were still being dominated by teams who were just more organised.

Miko looked a better player in patches too last season so hopefully Csaba can get them to perform to their full potential.

I think Nade has a negative effect on the dressing room aswell as the on the pitch, I'd bin him as now that Gonzo is offski the place might be a better working environment.
16

Glorious Hearts,

18/07/2008 12:21:16
#15 there was only one Gonzo and that was the great Stefano Salvatori!
17

Who?,

18/07/2008 12:24:08
If #10 is correct then another winger maybe not a bad idea. I know we have Driver, Beslija (well...) Miko, Larry and Chesney. I don't rate chesney or miko, Beslija will need time to get back and could well end up injured again and Larry prefers to play in the centre of midfield in a defensive role.

The only worry i have with this guy is that aberdeen in January is very different from cape town at the same time of year. The phrase horses for courses springs to mind.

Still excellent news that its the team manager who is running the show and is doing so with some determination.

* Appearances (Goals)
David Obua (born April 10, 1984 in Kampala) is a Ugandan football player who plays as either left-back or left-wing for South African side Kaizer Chiefs and The Cranes, the national team of Uganda.
He signed his first professional contract in the United States after briefly attending Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee between 1999 and 2001. His first taste of professional football was with Raleigh, N.C. in the United Soccer Leagues system. After a partial season in Raleigh, he moved to the Wilmington Hammerheads, a third division team, where he finished the season with 7 goals.
But problems off the field forced Obua to temporarily abandon his hopes of a professional career. He eventually returned to Uganda and started over again. Earning a place on the Uganda National Team, he was spotted by Kaizer Chiefs and signed for them for 3 years after a standout performance for the national team against South Africa. He went on to become one of the top players in South Africa during a two-year period 2005-2007.
Being out of contract he is now currently available on a free transfer. He has landed a trial with West Ham United where he spent his first day at Chadwell Heath on 11th July where he trained with his prospective new team-mates. Ha

Great that Csaba seems to be taking control of identifying potential targets. I still think we need to concentrate on a couple of strikers, and a left and right back first. Perhaps Csaba can work with Stewart and try and get a more attacking performance out of him?

Can I just say this is the quote of the day!!!!

One player Stevenson intends to get up close and personal with is Argentine star Messi, revealing that he's the one Barcelona star with whom he'd like to swap jerseys on the final whistle.

He said: "I've only ever had a fake Barcelona shirt brought back by relatives from a holiday in Spain so this is a chance to get the real thing. I think everyone will be fighting to get a Barcelona jersey for themselves. I'd probably go for Messi but perhaps I'll settle for one of the young boys who is going to be the next superstar."

Jamboy you answered your own question with 'favouritism'. If you know you're gonna get picked regardless, or you don't have to pay your fines, where's the motivation. Besides we know how Chesney picked up his bout of Vlad flu, it was that 'sometimes he is a bit strange' comment he made about VR.

Up front and left back are the two positions that I don't think anyone disagrees need strengthened. So if he's coming in as a LB, who could cover for Driver on the wing sounds like just the sort of player we need. I'd like to see him come in, especially as it would be the first signing for what - 3 years? - that we know is entirely down to the manager!

Apparantely David Obua can play at either left wing or left back and is meant to be pretty pacy and good on the ball. His favoured position i believe is as a left winger but can also play as a box to box central midfielder. This information was found on the web so i dont know how true it is but if he can left wing / left back or box to box central mid then he could be a decent addition to the squad. IF HE IS ANY GOOD THAT IS!!

Csaba's stamping his authority and methods

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that's official - according to manager Csaba Laszlo.

The new boss has implemented a strict new training regime, designed to bring the Hearts squad together, in terms of tactical awareness, spirit and physical condition."

"8.30am is the new report time for the Jambos, 45 minutes earlier than before. Players and coaching staff now take breakfast together.

After that the players have time to get ready and prepared for their first session of the day. This might include time with a physio or masseur.

At 9.45am the players head outside - earlier than before - to begin the first session of the day.

Csaba explained, "I want the players to realise that this is their job and the Academy is their place of work.

"We must be together and work hard. If we only come into work for two hours then we do not have the right mind. We must focus, work very hard, rest, and then continue our work again."

The manager confirmed that Hearts players are likely to train three times a day in Germany, starting at 7.30am in the morning before breakfast."

Nade must be shaking in his boots...wonder what Csaba's got him eating for breaky...half a slice of unbuttered toast, a grape, and a glass of water.

On a serious not, as each day passes and you hear more from this guy, the more you like hmi and get the feeling he will turn things around. Also the feeling that he is being allowed to make HIS decisions and get on with it is starting to show through i think.

ooops missed this part out at the bottom

"Hearts head out to Frankfurt on Sunday evening to the team's camp and Csaba admitted he is hopeful that there may be developments on the player recruitment front."

"We have some ideas and proposals," he added. "We must work together to make sure that any changes we make are very positive for Hearts."

#76 All in the past. Hearts fans are looking forward - the same direction as the team is going.

But a$$hole hibs fans like yourself, will keep thinking about the previous issues mentioned in your post, if only not to concentrate on the dire mess hibs are in.

Get it up ye' - Yehah!

Hang on a cottonpicking minute.
Am I going mental, or do we have a Hibee telling us to think about whats happened in the past, instead of how things might be going forward??

Surely that goes against the golden rule of Hobo.

GrahamL,

#85 No. You're right. From now on I'm going to believe everything you say. That's a much more sensible way than making up my own mind about things.

Tell me what you want me to do, oh master.
87

Who?,

Just when you think it will be OK to come back on the boards (like Tam Flogel) along come the children from Leith to put you off again. No point if you can't have a decent discussion without all the pointless name calling etc. it's like being back in the school playground.

The start of this managers reign reminds me of the early days of Burley, fingers crossed he is left to get on with managing team affairs because it breaks your heart to see the "team" turn out week after week in the manner they have last two seasons (with one or two exceptions).

Next door neighbour's 9 yr old lad got a new Hibs strip 2 weeks ago. Hasn't had it off his back.

Yesterday his maw told him she had to wash it but don't worry I'll hang it out on the line tonight and yoy can wear it tomorrow.

This morning he looked out the window and its lying on the deck.

"Why is my new Hibs strip lying on the muddy grass mum?" said he.

"Christ, these b@astards have been nicking the pegs again !!"

#94 Well mr Sinky Sub, you did enter the discussion by calling Hearts a circus. You then followed up with "the gunts getting mare knock backs than an ugly gorgie tart, the 'handling' of the Stevie Fail carry on, Fatboy Nade going missing, the imaginary stand development............ad infinitum..."

And you expect what from that? Some sort of intelligent discourse?

Summer holidays from school getting boring already?

For someone to see that joke as racist, they have to think like a racist in the first place.

That was no joke regarding gypsies, it was clearly meant that someone would rather steal a clothes peg worth nothing as opposed to a hibs top....but there again being a silly wee hobo we wouldnt expect you to have the intelligence to work that out....

I have a lot of time for these people.

Well, except for the chubbers.

Its not even that funny a joke.
Also if you look on the practical side of things the clothes peg has many more uses than the Hobo top.As for the Hobo top itself ....Andrex is much cheaper !!

This is hilarious...

The double standards of the Hibies is incredible!

One minute it is 'noone will take the Hearts job, 36mil debt, Asset stripping and morons saying absurd things like I have heard that Hearts are going into administration in errrr three weeks, and you wont buy players'

This week it is...

'The manager is a dud because we have never heard of him', 12mil off debt is to make it easier to shut down the club, Signing targets are duds because they are not local...

Make up your minds will you?

Before I go I would just like to say that i am very optimistic that the onfield product will be night and day better than last season... Give Csaba a chance, he has
