Published Date: 01 July 2008
ANGEL CHERVENKOV returned to Riccarton today to take temporary charge of Hearts under the guise of reserve-team coach.
Vladimir Romanov's faith in the Bulgarian has earned him a second chance in Edinburgh despite a catastrophic run of results whilst in charge of the first team last season, which preceded his sacking in December.

He will oversee ball-work training until the majority shareholder appoints a new managerial team and is expected to remain as reserve coach thereafter until further notice.

A source close to Tynecastle told the Evening News: "Angel is coming back as reserve coach and will help with first-team training until a new management team is put in place."

Chervenkov has no chance of being appointed manager permanently.

Despite his surprise re-appearance in Edinburgh, Romanov's scour for a head coach remains ongoing, although his arrival as third in command could mean that Hearts are preparing for an eastern European coaching duo to lead the first team next season.

Andrei Zygmantovich, currently coaching at Romanov-financed FBK Kaunas, remains a contender for the position.

The Evening News has learned that Romanov interviewed three managerial candidates last week, one being the German Jurgen Rober, who has since refused the chance to work for the Russian banker.

Rober's wage demands of ¤1m (£790,000) a year were far in excess of what Hearts have offered to previous candidates during contract discussions. Mark McGhee, the Motherwell manager, was negotiating a deal worth £375,000 a year, whilst the Slovakian Vladimir Weiss was offered £200,000 a year to leave Artmedia Bratislava.

Chervenkov has never left Romanov's footballing empire despite his removal from the Tynecastle scene.

Earlier this year, he was recruited by the Lithuanian club FK Silute in a consultancy role. Silute operate as a feeder club to Kaunas in Lithuania's A-Lyga and are known to be heavily influenced by Romanov.

However, when offered the chance to return to Hearts, he had no hesitation in accepting.

His involvement with the first team is as a stop-gap figure for the moment but Romanov will be aware that he is decidedly short on time if he is to appoint a new manager before July 14, when Hearts play their first pre-season match against Glentoran.

i've heard that there is a plan to make everything better for us jambos, here it is.... wait for it....

apparently, we should GET RID OF VLAD.

hey presto, all is rosy in the jambo garden of mayhem.

This has to be the final straw surely for everyone!?

Even if Angel is a stop gap, how can he be allowed to stay on as reserve coach when he was such a disaster last year.

Hearts are finished. Most fans are past caring, in fact I don't even know why I am wasting my time writing this.

Can anyone really justify, in any way, what Romanov is doing/has done to Hearts. We are not even a football club anymore. There is nothing left.

How do we as fans recover from this? Will we ever get our club back and learn to love it again? It is looking very doubtful short term.

You know what, I don't know what makes me angrier. Romanov or the thousands of season ticket holders who actually renewed this year. Believe me, I felt guilty as f*ck but decided to pick and choose my games as and when I wanted to give Romanov money based on the fact that NONE of us received value for money last season. I didn't choose to walk away from Hearts, I will still go to the games. What I did was choose as and when Romanov received my hard-earned cash.

To all those who did renew, based on last years performances, why did you? You have tossed aside our ONLY, ONLY chance of letting Romanov know that he can't keep screwing us...

This useless Angel idiot is the icing on the cake.

If Vlad decides to up and leave, barring a russian oil barron who is going to stump up £40 million to save the club. A club that will have been totally stripped of any assets. We are properly Fricked.

You are correct.

I am sick of reading countless regurgitated articles and interviews in the papers which have the same theme 'How long will the Hearts fans put up with this for?'.

Forever it Seems.

I for one have had it with Romanov... he won't listen, he won't change and he'll never learn... it is time for him to be removed. Seriously, this is it Hearts supporters have to bring back the SOH campaign as we are in a no win situation now.

The Romanovs are killing the club and alienating the support. The players want out too and we will surely be seeing a much publicised player revolt now that the hopeless Angel is back... to remove Frail and replace him with this parasite is beyond comprehension.

I have not renewed my ST and won't, I feel sorry for those that have as they are in for a season of abject misery.

We have six weeks till the season opener against Motherwell when we will truly learn the gulf of a divide between a club on the up under an excellent manager leading a 'team' and one on the demise... a team broken by a poor pre season and 'dare I say it' devoid of any quality.

Even if a coach is appointed... he'll be from Vlad's pool and we ALL know how poor that is.

Gary Locke in his interview has spoken out about his Jambo daft family not renewing and top players he knows wanting out... this is happening Hearts fans and we must start protesting NOW!

SAVE OUR HEARTS!

Last day of my hols so just a flying visit...

I have to say that I am right behind any Jambo vehicle set up to try and force change now. 100%

Rober was told more about what Vlad's plans for Hearts are in his interview than we have been privvy to since the man took over.

Also Rober's leak about Vlad (ridiculously) believing that the way forward for Hearts is to bring in guys from Kaunas and Ripo is the final straw for me... To what ends are we to go down this road??? For the massive transfer fee offered for Miko? The shafting that Rangers and Ostenstad gave us over Velicka? The success of such legends as Jankauskas? The sacking of great managers over their refusal to drop our top goal scorer for the less than useless Mikolunius? The disgrace of having to watch utter P1sh like Beni, Barasa, Ivaskevicius, Pilly-biter, Kancelskis etc pull on the great maroon jersey (devaluing it every time)?

Rober is a respected coach with a history of bringing on good young talent... HE DOESN'T THINK THAT THERE IS THE YOUNG TALENT AT THESE CLUBS FOR VLAD'S PLAN TO WORK!!! COME ON HERE PEOPLE ALARM BELLS ARE RINGING!!

What is this other possible club that he hopes to add to his axis of evil anyway??? Is he the reason Spartans are looking less than favourites now to join the SFL... This is a joke clearly but the point is unless he adds a team from a country with decent emerging talent then as Rober fears we are not going to get this business model to work.

I understand that we need to move players on for profit in order to make money... I don't have a problem with this but we don't make any money of the products of Kaunas and Ripo's accademys... We have made money from players brought through the ranks at Hearts, Players identified by managers and bought through Kaunas but as for trying to make money from substandard rubbish like Miko, Ivaskevicius and Kurskis... Whipping dead equines jumps imediately to mind.

While I hope I'm wrong the returning Angel may be the best thing for Hearts. It is entierly possible that Angel's team plans were being badly translated to the players by Steve Frail. Frail, not noted for his grasp of English won't be there.

Rober was offered a very good deal and I am SO glad that through his refusal of the job we finaly got to hear a little of Vlad's flawed plans for the future as it is the only way we have heard anything straight from the horses mouth on anything to do with OUR club since he took over.

In regards to Romanov, I agree with the earlier post #20 - he either needs to leave the club or be whacked, taken out, whatever you want to call it.

This is the worst state this club has been in since 1874. Its simply unacceptable the humiliation the hearts fans have had to endure. Like so many others, I used to count the days until the next Hearts match. Now, I've lost the will to even care. The 9000 who for some reason renewed to give him ONE LAST CHANCE (where have we heard that b4) have to attempt to get a refund. This club is being raped right infront of the people who love it and the sad thing is what can we actually do? we are f*cked.

#65 relax, Malofeev is not comming back. He is with the Belorussian Football Federation now, heading their youth and children department. Though from his interview of May 26, (http://www.football.by/news/15158.html for those who read Russian) it would seem that you've had a very narrow escape. He says that he left Romanov's football "factory" because he did not want to travel once more because of his age (2nd question). To travel where, one would ask? His last job was in Lithuania, so to travel from HERE on Romanov's orders would have been possible only to Scotland, or at least to pre-season camp in Germany, would it not? He opted to go home to Belarus, and got the job with the federation, so relax, at least HE is not threatennig you any more.

"Hearts look set to appoint Angel Chervenkov as their new reserve team coach.

Several players at Tynecastle felt the Bulgarian was one of the main reasons for the club's poor showing in the first half of last season.

However Chervenkov flew into Edinburgh at teatime yesterday and, with Stephen Frail on gardening leave, will help out with pre-season training.

He's also being lined-up to take the reserves as part of a new coaching structure at the club."

A few already slating BAnderson
But .... It is fresh news FFS - All the last week or so has been old stuff with bent bents put on it.(yes that was meant)
Angel had Hearts playing a style different from Frails...it did not work because of one reason. The ball retention and recycling methods he used required the most important man in the system to be a quality player - A good class cenre forward , that could hold the ball up and bring the 5 man midfield into play nearing the opposition penalty area.Unfortunately for us Hearts did not have this fulcrum as our forwards in the main were and are KRAP...ironically an in form and TRYING Jankauskas would have been the type of player , but being lazy and past it he had to go.
Chervenkov might have been a success if he had this one player up front - we played some alright stuff up until the penalty area , but that's where it all broke down.
Frail got us the points (most importantly) but the style or lack of it was perturbing.
The Bulgarian could do alright with the reserves.BUT THAT'S ALL FOR NOW VLAD.

Kaunas 01/07/2008 14:28:51
#73 agreed, it is quite sad. Do not know if this could cheer you up, but Malofeev does not spare compliments for Scottish football in the same interview.
But then there is more to the interview, I did not know whether to laugh or cry when I read it. I'll try to translate as close as possible (please, keep in mind, it was the end of May this year).
Malofeev: I am very glad that Hearts team, which I have prepared for this season, is now climbing the table, having won some matches recently. I am still following their performances closely. And to remind me of Scotland, I have a bag-pipe, and their famous plaid and skirt.
It seems some infectious hallucinogenic disease is spreading from Romanov to his henchmen, throwing everybody in his football hierarchy into long spells of delusions.

Yes Hobo's very much lokoing forward to the Derby, have no fear we will be there ! Giving it big licks and no doubt embarrasing the flair team again.

#87 you know, it seems even Malofeev has snubbed Romanov in the very end...
But he still has Zygmantovich - after all, it was him who followed, after Chervenkov was exiled from Kaunas to Silute. But Romanov can't bring Zygmantovich in outright, as the Belorussian hasn't got the required badges. Unless he decides to bring along Ramoska, to serve the nominal coach for Hearts, as he does for Kaunas now.

You should try it its grrrrreat!!! I am now off to get my wrap/giro/sell pegs as I am peg selling gypo sc*m... mwah ha hah!!

#90 QUESTION: in the 'unlikely' event that HEARTS apoint a competent manager /make 3or 4 new signings/start their SPL campaign better than Hibs will you devote as much time to Hearts threads?

ha ha thats the best one yet!!! Priceless!!!

Kaunas 01/07/2008 15:06:57
#91 No, he does not have the understanding of the Lithuanian language :) He is Bulgarian, remember? And I don't think he has learned Lithuanian in the several months he spent here - at least not in Silute - they speak a Zemaiciai (or Samogitian) dialect there, which we Lithuanians find hard to understand. More different from Lithuanian than Scots is from English, I would guess.

#90 CJ, I know man, I was just having a bit of fun their. Tried to lighten the mood a wee bit.

I will chat about whatever is interesting at the time. It just so happens that Hearts seem to have talking points. Not positive for you guys but interesting all the same. I should point out that I never go on kickback or any other Hearts websites. This is the Scotsman website, therefor I feel free to comment.

Nice to see Ozdon still telling us how to live our lives, don't know how I'd cope without him telling me that I've sat on my backside and done nothing......

I wouldn't ever have realised anything was wrong otherwise, fantastic insight once again Ozdon.

Remind me, from your long list of options, which I've listed below, what should we have done?

#88 hi Dub, nope been away expanding it in the States.

Was great no Hearts chat to worry about and I return to this nonsense. Still something will be back to normal next season I am sure. In 2005 we were in a similar position as to what we are now and we ended up with the Scottish Cup and 2nd in the league.

CJ

I have a healthy interest in Hibs issues. I have commented but there is really not a lot else to say. Hibs, like 10 other teams in our league, are having the usual pre-season. Some rumours about players but not a lot to do really really except wait n see. Quite simply, Hearts are the opposite. No manager, players getting released, managers knocking back Vlad, debts higher than your assets, ex players speaking out against the regime... I could go on. If you dont see that there is more talking points with Hearts then there is something wrong with you.

I have my ticket for Sunday, but no idea if it is a sell out.

3rd place? Hehe, very good. Confidence or arrogance?

Agreed, CJ

I think Hearts will surprise a lot of teams this season. There's an abundance of talent in the squad (although I would like a back-up for Banks) and we've got some of the best youths in the country challenging for a 1st team place.

Write us off at your pearl.

Lenny,

CJ, I wouldnt have complained had Hughes got the Hibs job. I would be very very surprised if he ever ended up at Tynecastle however. And yes, his signings look good, O'Brian especially. Pity it wasnt Alan O'Brian!!!

I will wait until I see what players have came in until I predict for next season. I do find your optmisim baffling however. Def a glass half full man.

No VIC
"Apparently" you HUMPS need to get off your fat 4rses long enough to organise yourslves in such a way that you are at least able to get enough financial expertise on board to allow Fans groups to force some answers to the missing financial questions at DECLINE CASTLE...........but that'd rule YOU out then VIC...what with you not ever going out and forgetting that matches are on,...despite droning on about Hearts all day every day, Eh?.
Yours is a voice of despair that "nothing can be done" and if enough HUMPS don't dump your view, then you must at least consider the possibility that your club MIGHT well have to face ultimate failure....but that's OK VIC...I mean, you've been saying that" things are not as bad as they appear".....Oh Yeah??
....how DID you ever get to be a contender??
(Everybody HUMPS Hearts)

True mate. I will expand, I think we will sneak a win but lose over there. Not being arrogant, just fancies our chances at ER.

what a chancer,

19th hole 01/07/2008 16:57:15
as i sais yesterday,it is the least expensive option, cant afford to sack players for poor performance due to thier contracts, hearts must prove they are trustworthy or the building companies wont entertain his project, the youth set up is value for money but that will take time to fulfill till then its straight up the middle.
