Scanner to help beat killer infections
SCIENTISTS have invented a “superbug scanner” that could win the war against deadly hospital infections.
Researchers at Edinburgh University are developing technology that can detect lethal bacteria in less than an hour and even recommend which drugs to prescribe.
The equipment can help fight the Clostridium difficile (C.diff) bug and MRSA.
Dr Till Bachmann, who is leading the research, said the technology could lead to patients being scanned and treated for bugs before being admitted to hospitals to prevent outbreaks.
It could also save the NHS millions of pounds.
Dr Bachmann said: “Our concern is that the current diagnosis of bacterial infections is too slow.
“It can take one day to know which bacterium you are dealing with and then another to find out its resistance.”
