JAMES McCARTHY earned Hamilton their first victory at Pittodrie since 1931 – but he will not complain if he is left out of the team next week.

The 17-year-old has placed his trust in manager Billy Reid to ensure he does not do too much too young in his debut season in the top flight.

McCarthy was omitted from the starting line-up for the visit to Aberdeen yesterday after making his Rep
ublic of Ireland Under-21 debut in Portugal in midweek.

But Accies were struggling to trouble the home defence after falling behind to Gary McDonald's first Aberdeen goal.

Reid made a tactical switch in the 32nd minute as he replaced Tony Stevenson for McCarthy and the teenager put in the cross that led to David Graham's stunning volley two minutes later as Hamilton levelled. McCarthy then earned Hamilton a 2-1 victory when he burst forward and hooked the ball over Jamie Langfield just before the hour mark.

He said: "It's great to get off the mark in the SPL. I am always wanting to play but maybe he (Reid] is right to leave me out sometimes. He knows the game."

Elsewhere, a man-of-the-match performance was little consolation for Garry Wood after seeing his Inverness side lose 2-1 at home to St Mirren. The 20-year-old repaid Craig Brewster for his decision to partner him up front alongside Adam Rooney with another impressive display.

However, he said: "I thought we played well but obviously the main aim is to get three points and we didn't quite manage that."
