Published Date: 09 November 2007
GLASGOW'S bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games ended in triumph today.
The city beat off competition from the Nigerian capital Abuja to win the crucial ballot, sparking wild scenes of celebration in Glasgow's Fruitmarket.

The decision means that Edinburgh is likely to host the diving contest at a revamped Commonwealth Pool, although final details have yet to be decided.

Glasgow had been the firm favourites going into today's meeting of Commonwealth Games Federation delegates in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Glasgow bid won by 47 votes to 24.

First Minister Alex Salmond hailed Glasgow's victory and pledged: "We will make these Games the greatest sporting event our country has ever seen.

"They will be our chance to show the whole world the very best of Scotland."

Julia Bracewell OBE, chair of sportscotland, said the result was "fantastic news" for the entire country.

She said: "Hosting such a high-profile event will undoubtedly help to drive sport forward at all levels, increasing participation and improving performance.

"It will provide Scottish athletes with the advantage of competing and being supported on home soil. And as importantly, it will give coaches, officials and volunteers the experience of a lifetime."

The result was greeted with cheers of joy from the Scottish bid team in Sri Lanka.

And there were scenes of celebration in Glasgow as the news was broadcast live on big screens at a series of public events, including around 1000 people in the Old Fruitmarket venue for the main event.

The Glasgow bid organisers had faced an agonising wait after the final presentations ended before the result was announced by Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Mike Fennell at 12.42pm UK time.

Mr Salmond headed up Glasgow's final presentation which lasted around 30 minutes and was accompanied by a video narrated by Sir Sean Connery.

He told delegates that Scotland was ready to host the Games for the first time since 1986.

The First Minister said hosting the Games in Glasgow would mean people would be "united in celebration of sport".

Glasgow were favourites because of the technical strength of the bid but Abuja was thought to have a lot of support from those hoping to see the Games in Africa for the first time.

The victory will result in a massive regeneration of Glasgow's poverty-hit east end, with new investment in sporting and housing facilities.

And it means the UK could host some of the biggest tournaments in world sport in a glittering decade.

The 2010 Ryder Cup will take place in Wales, with the event returning to British shores four years later when it is held at Gleneagles.

London will host the 2012 Olympics and the Rugby Football Union have already declared their intention to bid for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

The FA has officially announced that it will bid to host the 2018 football World Cup and a year later the cricket version will again be held in England.

Welcoming the result, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "It's looking like a great sporting decade for our country."

Mr Salmond pledged to make the 2014 Commonwealth Games the greatest sporting event in Scotland's history.

The First Minister said ordinary Scots had played a part in securing the Games by their enthusiasm for the bid – and he pledged an "electrifying" event.

"We will make these Games the greatest sporting event our country has ever seen," Mr Salmond said in Colombo.

"They will be our chance to show the whole world the very best of Scotland, to inspire people to take up a sport or embrace a healthier lifestyle, and a chance for our athletes to compete for Scotland on Scottish soil."

The Games would showcase Glasgow as "the friendly city", said Mr Salmond, who described today's announcement as the culmination of years of hard work.

"We put together a great bid and this was recognised by the voters," he said.

He quoted a report by the evaluation commission which said Glasgow had demonstrated the ability to put on an event that would enhance the image and prestige of the Commonwealth Games.

"But it's all of us – the people of Scotland – who have helped to make our Games dream a reality.

"The enthusiasm and excitement shown by people across the country did not go unnoticed.

"It's up to us all now to keep building the buzz to make sure we put on an electrifying Games and to make sure that we make the most of this wonderful opportunity."

Excellent news for Scotland, Glasgow and particularly the run-down East End of the city. This will provide a real boost to the regeneration of the area, and will provide a real national feel-good factor.

Many congratulations to all involved in the winning bid for their excellent success for Glasgow and Scotland.

This will provide a good boost to the edinburgh ecomomy because most visitors will take one look at tracksuit brigade who roam the streets of glasgow and choose to commute to the sporting events from edinburgh each day.

Pathetic. This is not a day for feeble East-West rivalry.

Scotland just won the right to host a major international event, which will benefit the entire country. We should all be proud of that.

5

Raoul Duke,

This country is continually unable to complete projects within budget. It apparently has no money for schools, hospitals and proper public transport, not to mention pathetic sporting facilities, but thinks its ok to ignore this and instead choose to spend gross sums on a 3rd rate sporting event, which will NOT make any real benefit to the nation.

Just got this by email...

As part of the announcement that Glasgow has won the bid to host the Commonwealth games in 2014 new demonstration sports have been included to add local flavour.

Ned-ball and Jakey-bashing should prove a big indoor draw whilst in the track and field the "100m Smash and Grab" is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

CONGRATULATION GLASGOW AND TO ALL GLASWEGIANS!!!!

BUT you had better start to do something about the filth - both human and urban - that is rampant in Glasgow.

And while you are at it perhaps a concerted effort by the police and municipal authorities to START to educate binge-drinkers and weekend revellers that puking, urinating in public, muggings, rapes, murders, break-in and general mayhem are not conducive to giving Glasgow a good impression to all the athletes and tourists that will visit your city for the games.

GOOD LUCK on that and it will be an uphill battle.

You have about SEVEN YEARS! to get on the wagon to rehabilitation.

Any truth in the rumour that the Prime Minister was first on the phone to the First Minister to share their joy in this great triumph for their native Scotland?

The news should doubly please Gordie as he was born outside Glasgow.

Tell me Mikey (#15) did Edinburgh find all the money for the 1986 Commonwealth Games? If it did, then why should Glasgow be different?

19

Eckles,

09/11/2007 14:19:52

I'll put money on it that there are several sprint records broken, both at Commenwealth and World levels. This will be due to the athletes being chased around Glesga by the local tribes of neds!

How much did Edinburgh get for the TramLine white elephant from Central Government? Something like £500m, wasn't it?

Please go away.

21

MikeyBoy,

Edinburgh 09/11/2007 14:22:16

The 1986 games had a budget of £ 14m and ended up with an alleged defecit of £ 3m and eneded up having to be rescued.

The 2007/2014 figures have increased somewhat over the years.

22

Eckles,

09/11/2007 14:27:07

We could use the M8 route as the Marathon, but you'd have to have the end in Edinburgh as that'll make the runners run quicker.

If it was in Glasgow no one would want to finish!

Scotland receives 9.76% of funding from the lottery money, & that's with only 8.4% of UK population too. Just don't buy lottery tx it's not compulsory!!!

Again, well done Glasgow...enjoy.

A wee bit difficult to enthuse as it's unlikely to attract really world class athletes - and it's a few years off. But congrats to Glasgow and the organisers.

A few points-

1. Where will the running track be? Does the West of Scotland have a top-quality stadium suitable for athletics.
2. Do we have an olympic-sized pool with sufficient spectator facilities?
3. Ditto - velodrome?

Surely some lottery cash will be forthcoming for such a major event. We are a small country in population terms and it would be unfair for other worhwhile Scottish Government programmes to be cut to the tune of - allegedly - £300 million.

35

The_Doctor,

09/11/2007 16:18:05

#34

1) The running track will be at Hampden park. A temporary platform will be built over the pitch which will hold the athletics events. This will help to keep costs down, by adapting an existing high-quality venue to accomodate athletics.

2) The National Swim Centre at Scotstoun. This already exists, but will be further improved prior to the Games.

3) This is one of the main infrastructure developlments, and will be built in the East End.

well done Glasgow
the main difference is that Glasgow welcomes visitors whereas the Edinburgh folk seem to resent them. they don't like too many furriners coming to the Festival; they don't like too many coming to the Hogmanay do because some residents might like to go but there are no free tickets for them.
as for the suggestion that Glasgow is a sink estate have a look at the post when the suggestion of affordable housing in Craigmillar was posted. even with improvements no-one in Edinburgh has a good word to say. sorry but there are part of Edinburgh that are equally or worse than some of the estates in Glasgow. if you want the snooty games pick Edinburgh or an the man said when asked
"where would we be without humour"
answer
"Edinburgh".

Edinburgh people (most of them) are the most insecure, jealous, up themselves and obnoxious people on the entire planet. People from Bath are almost as bad as the natives of Scotland's real-life brigadoon, both sets of natives have a real problem with neighbouring, much larger cities (Glasgow and Bristol).

YOU LOT need to grow up, it's time you finally outgrew the jealous wee town that's forever looking over its chippy shoulder at Glasgow and throwing insults westwards usual daily p!sh, stop being so childish and stop hating fellow Scots, especially our country's biggest city.

All you are doing every day in these comments is reconfirming and underlining the Edinburgh stereotyped native and proving to the rest of Scotland why Edinburgh deserves to be regarded with utter contempt.

Edinburgh is very lucky to have managed to hold onto capital status, despite only being the 2nd biggest city of the country.

The rest of Scotland can see the changes that have happened in Glasgow over the last couple of decades. All the rest of Scotland can see is Edinburgh hasn't changed, still very much a case of "Edinburgh: nice (looking-ish) city, but shame about the people".

Well done Glasgow, our major city will host a fantastic games (something that wee Edinburgh failed to do twice when it had the chance..).

51

I trust that you are off your high horse now.

Two things.

Does being a capital city rest purely with being the geographically largest?

And i'm sure you will find that east/west banter works both ways.

52

thomas,

midlothian 09/11/2007 20:38:56

quelle suprise, imagine winning something like the commonwealth games from a poor african city.
anyway it will upgrade the east end of glasgow, the people living there will be happy about that, good for them, and about time too. joke mconnell could have done this years ago without the games. the residents were entitled to better, long before now.
that said, we can enjoy the thrills of the games coming to scotland. our best against the best of 50+ countries is still worth getting excited about. hope they are a success, and glasgow gets in the frame to hold them again! if we have two cities capable of hosting the games so much the better!

53

Plastic Pat,

Salt and sauce and proud 09/11/2007 20:50:33

Only those who are insecure accuse the good people of Edinburgh of having a chip on their shoulders. Why would we? We are the Capital City and have seen many changes here too in past decade, we have hosted the Commonwealth Games twice AND have been recognised as the best city in the country to live in. No insecurities here, just getting on with life. Well done to Glasgow but please stop trying to talk your city up by talking Edinburgh down we should complement each other

54

Vanesa,

Meadowbank 09/11/2007 21:52:54

Great news about the games bid.

Interesting lesson that Glasgow can learn from Edinburgh (on the BBC website):
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/70...

If we want success in these and other games, we need to invest properly in training facilities such as Meadowbank; not sell them off for luxury flats.

Believing in ourselves is important, but providing sports facilities is a practical step that will achieve greater results.

55

Arnold Codger,

I can tell you for sure, on my first visit to the EN and frequent reader of Glasgow papers that there is NOT the vitriol towards Edinburgh expressed in Glasgow newspapers. There is some of course, mainly on financial grounds and on constructive criticism.

We do say that the people of Edinburgh are small-minded 'why don't you just go home' type and i can see that this is true now.
