SIGNIFICANT investment in sport is needed if Scotland is to win medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, MSPs were warned today.
Scottish sportsmen and women took home 29 medals from the last Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia last year.

But in a submission to Holyrood's finance committee today, national sports agency Sportscotland warned that "significant additional investment in elite sport" was required for Scotland to do well in 2014.

Lee Cousins, head of policy at Sportscotland, said: "Sportscotland have costed that for Scotland to compete and have a top eight finish in all sports and achieve a target of 45 medals, £33.7 million additional resources on top of current UK and Scottish investment in elite sport will be required between now and 2014."

He said the Games also had the ability to drive the development of Scottish sport, enthusing and engaging people to participate in sport and providing a focus for athletes to produce their best.

I think we are all loosing sight of these international games events. It's now a competition between the politicians as to see how many medals their countries competitors can get. SA IOC were considering not supporting the SA Hockey team because it was felt they didn't have much chance of winning a medal.

"He said the Games also had the ability to drive the development of Scottish sport, enthusing and engaging people to participate in sport and providing a focus for athletes to produce their best."

What a load of crap. The VAST majority of people will watch the events on TV, as with the London Olympics. Looks at all the sports channels available on TV. I doubt it will encourage more than one or two to get off their arses - then that will be to go get a carry-oot.

These events are there, funded by taxopayer money, to let the politicians show each other who has the biggest knob.

Well, think on this. The budget for the olympics has gone up from £2bln to £10bln, if you think it's going to stop there dream on. we'll be hearing of stories of brickies, chipies & sparkies on £1k a day in the lead up to this fisaco.

#5 If you dig into the numbers the Olympics haven't gone from £2b to £9b, the Games themselves have stayed at £2b which was the original submission to the IOC.

This £2b includes the cost of running the Games and all the sports facilities (temp or perminant) that are needed.

The increase in costs is down to the money being invested in the regeneration of the East End of London around the Games Park and the VAT decision. The second problem being down to two Gov departments (Treasury and DCMS) falling out over how it should be treated and Treasury (with Wee Gordy at the helm) winning out.

On the Commonwealth Games the budget is MUCH smaller and importantly other than the althlete village - which will be sold as afforadable housing post Games - all the facillities are either there already (70%) or would have been built even if the Games had gone to Nigeria.

The jist that the Games are about politicians has some basis, but remember that the then Aussie Prime Minister sat at the Montreal Summer Games back in 19?? and was so ashamed of his country's performance that he decided to shift policy and money toward making the population participants not spectators.

Here's hoping that 2012 and 2014 can do the same for the UK.
