CASINOS, bookmakers and betting websites are able to advertise their services on TV and radio in the UK for the first time.
Underthe Gambling Act, which came into force today, the commercials will be subject to strict rules, including a 9pm watershed. The Act aims to tighten regulation and ensure the young and vulnerable are not exploited.

Bookmaker Ladbrokes intends to launch a TV campaign later this year, while rival Coral said it could start doing so "in the short to medium-term". And a bingo prize of at least £1 million has been announced as a result of the new gambling laws.

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said: "The Gambling Act will give the Gambling Commission and local authorities unprecedented powers to ensure gambling is conducted fairly, children and vulnerable people are protected and crime is kept out."

But a Salvation Army spokesman said: "Gambling is not a normal leisure activity. Whilst some people enjoy a flutter or bet from time to time, gambling can become addictive and cause many problems. The results can be devastating on the individual, their friends, family, and on society."

It should be pretty obvious that the misery caused by gambling is going to get worse with this further legitimisation.

There are no depths so low that our government will not stoop to, to get its hands on more of our money.

Every programme on ITV3 is preceded by an advert for gambling.

How can it be any worse when there are already phone-in roulette gambling and virtual horseracing games on the satellite/cable TV channels?

It can get a lot worse. They are making a new market with this Act.
