Forth Road Bridge inspection finds cracks in suspension cable nuts

A ROUTINE inspection has found cracks in heavy duty nuts used to secure the steel ropes which hold up the Forth Road Bridge.
Nine out of a total of 1888 of the nuts were cracked and have been sent for tests.

Four nuts have already been replaced and the other five will be replaced during the coming year using access platforms in place as part of ongoing work on the main cables.

The cause of the cracking will be investigated by Consulting engineers Faber Maunsell.

Barry Colford, chief engineer and bridge master at the Forth Road Bridge, said the bridge remained perfectly safe.

... sounds like routine maintenance to me. Cracks found in a very small number of nuts during a routine inspection. well done, FETA - good to hear you are doing an effective job these days.

#8 Agree, a tunnel would be a great idea for a new crossing, the bridge has far too many problems and is regularly closed to highsided vehcies due to wind.

In the interests of safety - I really think the bridge is closed until every nut has been replaced. I know this will upset a lot of car drivers, but safety always comes first.

Why was this non story printed?
Routine maintenance is not a subject for newspapers.
Only a clown would think this is a story. I don't expect to be informed every time they change a light bulb in the workies hut and don't think replacing a few nuts is worthy of reporting either.

A recent survey showed that there were approximately 17 million pot holes in Britain's roads, I trust we will get a similar non-story about this. Also I saw people replacing rails on a stretch of railway line at the weekend so they must be suspect too and didn't they recently re-surface the runway at Turnhouse.
Terrible people these engineers can't they make anything that lasts for ever and ever and ever and never ever wears out? The only thing that never wears out is politicians ability to grub perks and expenses off the taxpayer.
Oh and some of the harling on our house looks a bit old, should we move out and await the arrival of the emergency press reporter to frighten all owneres of similar houses. Oh and maybe we should ban weather.
OK I'm rambling on a load of rubbish but the EN started it..............

To #7. I would rather cross the The Forth Road Bridge 365 Day a Year twice a day than go into the Burnley Tunnel in Melbourne Australia it is the most dangerous place I know, so don't say that tunnels are safe. This tunnel has had water leakage for years and terrible crashes one severe crash causing death to several folks and there have been some bad crashes every other week. Even the Train System is not safe always someone getting Beaten or Mugged. Keep up the gid work one the Bridge Folks it's safe as hooses.
