Lots for Hibs boss to ponder as Elfsborg turn on the style

Published Date: 03 July 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today declared his flying visit to Sweden "invaluable" after watching InterToto Cup rivals IF Elfsborg maintain their turbo-charged start to the season.
Paatelainen was an interested onlooker as Elfsborg raced into a 2-0 lead after only 14 minutes away to Djugarden in Stockholm last night.

And, although they didn't add to those early goals, the win was enough to keep them second in the Allsvenskan, hard on the heels of leaders Kalmar, who romped to a 5-1 win away to Gefle.

Elfsborg were at full strength as the Swedish League season restarted following a month's break and got off to the perfect start as Anders Svensson, who had starred in all three of his nation's Euro 2008 matches, nodded home a cross from Stefan Ishizaki after only 61 seconds.

Ishizaki, pinpointed by former Hibs goalkeeper Daniel Andersson as the biggest threat to his former club, added the second from the penalty spot in the 14th minute, leaving Elfsborg with just one defeat from their opening 12 matches.

As he began his journey back to Edinburgh this morning to take a training session with his squad later in the day, Paatelainen admitted what he had seen, allied to an earlier report from coach Gareth Evans who watched Elfsborg in action last week, had given him plenty of food for thought.

He said: "It was a valuable trip. As I had thought, Elfsborg had their strongest side out because this was an important league match. Elfsborg are a quality side, well-organised and very disciplined."

Last night's clean sheet means Elfsborg have conceded just three goals in 1080 minutes of league action, another formidable statistic for Paatelainen to ponder ahead of Sunday's first leg at Easter Road.

He said: "They defend well, they are very solid at the back, no doubt about that."

The win left Elfsborg manager Magnus Haglund in better humour than he had been following last weekend's 0-0 draw with HB Torshavn, even although his much-weakened side had won the right to face Hibs thanks to a 4-1 win in the Faroe Islands a week earlier.

Haglund said: "The result gives us optimism for what will be a tough match in Edinburgh." Meanwhile, Sunday's match will be refereed by Luxembourg official Albert Toussaint, who has been marked out as one of UEFA's rising stars.

Having gained his referee's licence at the age of 14, the 31-year-old has been rising through the ranks, gaining his FIFA badge in 2005 and earlier this year joining Europe's other most promising young officials for UEFA's eighth "talent and monitors seminar" held in Nyon.

As such, Toussaint has been earmarked as a possible referee for the next European Championships in 2012 although, to date, he has taken charge of just one full international, sending off Kazakhstan defender Maksim Zhalmagambetov as his country was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Azerbaijan in a Euro 2008 qualifying match.

Toussaint will be assisted by countrymen Antonio De Carolis and Marco Tropeano while the fourth official will be Scotland's Keith Sorbie.

#1 Agreed. It would be easy to critisize the board/management so I`ll bite the bullet, say that I`m not optomistic, and wait for an unlikely but pleasant surprise. You have to think there is some transfer activity and Hibs over the years have kept their business very much under wraps, the down side is that lots of Hibby`s will feel let down again by the profound lack of ambition at Easter Road. It`ll not happen under Petrie I don`t think but for once, wouldn`t it be different to get enthusiastic about the club by way of positive, bigger thinking additions to the squad?

This has got disaster written all over it.

Since we slumped to our worst performance under Mixu (Muderwell last game of the season) we have had precisely no more inward transfer activity, though of course Beuzy has finally departed. There's been some speculation about JJ but that's only to soften the blow of Fletcher moving on, probably along the M8.

The players have had a whole 10 days off, so I'll be interested to see what, if anything, has changed. And how average Van Zanten is.

We could be in for a very long, poor season with not a decent quality signing in site and yet DUFC manage to snag the boy Flood who looked like a very useful player last season.

But as Hibs fans we're forever being told that the Board will back Mixu with cash and only the OF and Hertz pay more, etc. etc.

I'm really disappointed in Hibs - they haven't produced a decent enough player for Celtic to sign this year. Now come on!

Things not looking to good for you boys eh no more fantasy flair football to talk about then ?

I predict a few chickens coming home to roast with a bottom six finish and maybe even a wee relegation scrae along the way, no Gretna to save you either, could be a very fun season indeed.

So what sort of attendance can we expect at your latest interdodo cup humping ?

What happened to all this BELIEVE nonsense?

and how would it come down to the derbies?? we will still win more games than you then the derbies wouldn't count - and anyway the only reason you took more points off us last season is you FAILED to get into the top 6

Only one Manager has knocked us back that was McGhee.

The others were never offered the post in the first place so couldn't knock us back. Try to establish the facts before gobbing off in the future.

As I said reckon the shoe will be on the other foot this time round.

AS for signings dont know why everyones on there high horse?,who else in our league has been busy in the transfer market? 3 days into july so plenty time left.ideally you want everyone on board for the start of pre season training but it doesn't work like that.We need to bring in the right players not do a hearts and bring in any old sh!t for the sake of it.

#15 Rolland and roll and roll.........

The Tyncastle soap opera rolls on. While it may be true that only McGhee has actually turned the job down from the point of view of a formal offer being made, it is thought that at least 6 other possibles (mostly Eastern European) have been sounded out and have declined the opportunity to be considered. Romanv is surely now reaping what he has sown in that no self respecting genuine manager coach will allow the owner to a) recruit all the players without his input b) have the team on the park picked by that owner who is sited over 100 miles away.

HOMFC should change to FFC.

Cannon

Hugh Let Packhard

Each had to decline, via the dealership, as the rental had to be paid for earlier than 6 months late.

filter 9: - Rolland - brain detection
filter10: - Rolland - pi$h detection

I think this will help next time Gretna of Midlothian numpties (Rolland) in particular come dribbling online.

Rolland.

I was just looking around the boards yesterday and it struck me that you had vanished. It struck me that you had maybe seen the sense in not posting on the Hibs threads when your own club is in deep doggy. It's a well kent phrase........

People in glass houses.......

Back to your team. You'll be taking 12 points off us will you? Care to enter into a large wager on that?

And only McGhee was offerred the job? Eh? That'll be how both the Slovak and German both came out and said they'd been offerred the job. And politely declined it.

Your ability to put positive spin on what can only be described as a thoroughly depressing situation for your club can only be described as incredible. Or laughable. Or stupidity.....

Have you ever through about entering politics?

Have you thought of applying for Charlie Mann's old job at Hearts?

Have to admit that I would like to see some new players coming into Hibs squad. I think that the Intertoto Cup is too much of a distraction.

The slow news stories coming out of Easter Road are really boring.

Mind you, the Hearts stories are always good for a giggle. Couple of weeks ago, Pinilla was getting special treatment/training in preparation for being Hearts 'great white hope'. This week - ta ta!

Next we get a story about a player we had all forgotton Hearts still had. Laughable.

And they dredge further into the bargain bucket for prospective managers. And still they get knocked back by those non-entities. Hilarious!

Yeah, Rolland, we're bricking it. Running scared. Dismayed by all the momentus events down Tynecastle way.

Great real mate!
33

Rolland,

And how have we got worse? we've not played since May ?

Oh the wisdow of the lesser spotted hobos.

For those that noticed I wasn't around I've had more to concern myself with with the happenings over at Tynie. I've also been out the coutry and not concerning myself with football matters. I'm off to Sweden on Sunday so enjoy your interdodo cup match, try not to embarras Scotland as usual.

You've lost your best player and brought in ziltch so can't see you guys being any great shakes, oh aye and Zibby is back :-)
34

Dood,

Rolland. Some points.

Firstly, I have no idea what wisdow is.

How have you got worse? Eh...... No players in, more dressing room disharmony, supporters revolting (very), no manager despite promises in January. Just a few things, there will be more, but enough to suggest that things certainly aint improved.

We've lost our best player? Pray, who? Boozy? Didn't kick a ball in the last two years. No huge loss. Oh aye, and Zibby's back. No huge issue as I doubt he'll be here to stay.

How is Eduardas Kurskis? And was he Zibby in disguise?

Sweden watch out, there's a loony coming!!!!!!!

Steady on there #39. Rolland is not so bad. Didn't you read above that he is off to Sweden to prepare for watching the Elfsberg v IF Hibernian 2nd leg match next Saturday. If that's not a clue to where his real sympathies lie then I am a turnip! All along I have suspected that he is really a Hibernian supporter at the wind-up and now we know for sure.

lets face it, I think its the hertz fans who are really bricking it, judging by the comments on their stories, i detect a massive amount of fear from the majority of those who have a brain cell and realize how bad the situation is.

those like rolland seem to be in denial and like all idiots, just lash out at others whilst ignoring their own problems. posters like #21, who raise sensible questions go unanswered. so, what reasons do the jambos have to believe they'll take 12 points off us and finish above us? anyone...

This is just a guess as I don't really know. I have a ticket, so does my friend Bernard so there will be us 2 for sure. So, in answer to your original question probably more than 2 would be my estimate. Does that answer your question? If anyone else has bought a ticket, add it on to my estimate and tell No 42. He's keen to know who's all going this Sunday.

I hope Hibs dont stuff up and feild a second string side, no disrespect to QOS, but we do need enougher SPL team to join Motherwell in the UEFA cup, as QOS will most likley get knocked out on their first try. And screw up the coef for Scotland!
45

Rolland,

41 - No at all us Jambo's are looking forward to the new season lets face it we can't be any worse. Frail has been removed and things are starting to look up. We're keeping Berra and kingston so plenty of goals from midfield. Expecting a couple of forwards to come in, looks like Clum is off as well so looking good, we are not at all worried. You lot however should be, you've got a manger granted, not a very good one and one still learning the ropes doubt he'll do much.

Sweden is a "business" trip and I return the day you lot play so hopefully won't have to see any of you lot embarras Scotland as you tend to do on these brief appearences in the interdodo cup.

#42 with the holidays here, I would estimate a crowd of around 6 - 7 K for this one. I mean most of the hobo's will just pop back up the road on a bus from their time share caravans at Port Seaton now won't they.

Dood - You points - re Shaggy, gone not a proper manager we will have one installed by kick off time, come the end of Aug when the transfer window closes we will have signed more or less a new team so not worried in the slightiest.

Do tell anyone, how is the plans for the new stand you were promised progressing ? Has building work started I see many cranes near ER but not actually starting any work on the ground, didn't you lot say the funding was in place ? Can't be the board telling porkies or could it.... how is the buy a brick cause your bricking it campaign going lads ? You never know you might just might get enough to build a BBQ.
