HIBS star Derek Riordan has been given the all-clear following fears he had broken a toe before pre-season training had even started.

Last season's top scorer spent last week receiving intensive treatment after hurting his foot while out running by himself as he prepared to report back with his team-mates to meet new manager John Hughes.

As a precaution he was sent for an X-ray with both player and Hughes breathing a sigh of relief when it came back clear.

Even so, as the rest of the squad began pre-season training yesterday in the searing heat which touched 90°F, Riordan was confined to lapping Hibs' East Mains Training Centre on a bike.

But Hughes was expecting Riordan to join in with the rest of the squad today. The Hibs boss said: "Derek had been doing a bit of work on his own but perhaps he's overdone it. He was in all last week getting treatment and we had his foot X-rayed as a precaution.

"It showed there wasn't a break which is great news. Derek is looking really lean, he should train with the rest of them today and our task is to get him right for the start of the action so we can get a really good season from start to finish from him."

Hughes was delighted to finally get down to work with his players nearly a month after succeeding Mixu Paatelainen as manager, his joy heightened at the sight of Kevin McCann back on the training ground after an absence of more than a year.

McCann was given the go-ahead by the specialist who operated to cure the tendinosis which had been plaguing him for more than 18 months and now, Hughes, admitted, the problem would be trying to keep the young defender in check.

He said: "It was great to see Kevin back. You could see he's had a long break from the game but he dug in and the most important thing was that he didn't have any reaction from the knee which was my main concern.

"Kevin wants to be right up there but I told him you don't do all your pre-season in one day. Towards the end of pre-season and when we start to play games I'm sure he'll be flying, but he can't be too hard on himself.

"As a whole I thought the squad was looking good although, as expected, there were one or two looking a bit better than others."

Hughes had promised his players they'd have the ball at their feet on the first day back and he was true to his word with only seven runs included in the session which saw the players go through 120 bottles as they tried to cope with the heat. The manager said: "The heat was a concern so it was vital the boys kept themselves hydrated. We had plenty of rest periods and stretching but I couldn't have asked for any more in terms of attitude and commitment."

Hughes also managed a quick chat with skipper Rob Jones whose future is subject to much speculation with the defender keen to return to England. Hughes said: "I'll be talking to him constantly, he knows I fully understand his situation but he also knows I am keen to keep him."

Really pleased to have McCann back, bit of an overused cliche but it is like having a new player and will provide some much needed competition at RB.

Also nice to see Riordan getting himself ready for the new season, it was clear that he wasnt fit enough coming back from Celtic after so little first team football but he improved as year went on and a good pre season should mean he's raring to go for the new campaign.

Ratboy stubbed his poor little toe while out running- who from the police? a drug deal demanding their tick? some guy's boyfriend?

I saw ratboy a few weeks back in "bar" in the west end of town with some really chav looking folk. It wasn't their bulging eye balls or their rubbery chins that made me stare but the fact they took turns sniffing the table. The establishment does food during the day so maybe ratboy needed a sodium fix after all his exercise to replenish his salt content...

...explains his thin guant look...

Its common knowledge that Jackie Treehorn is aware of the size of all clubs supporters tadgers and likes to cruise the likes of CC's to find out where they hang out so he can go out on the pull in more ways that one.

Good to hear McCann's back & pleasing to hear that Deek is obviously keen to show himself in a more proffesional light. Think the coming season could be a belter for Derek now he'll be regarded as top choice striker......

Yogi still saying the right things and I remain optimistic for the coming season, especially if our men from Morroco make a comeback.

As for the Hearts "fans" on this thread, I feel your pain on losing out on yet another signing target as your idea of a contract was "unacceptable" to him and your growing fear over the coming season becomes more & more palpable as each day passes......

Hibs to release JJ, Keenan, DVZ & Thicot in next few days.

before I get all the Source please etc etc am not going to reveal it, however you regular poster will remember me saying last week when asked if anyone had heard about hibs signing Cregg, I replied with yes I got a text last night saying he has signed, To which I then got ripped for various people for not revealing source. :-)

Good news on Deeks as I think he could get at least 20 goals this year for us now we seem to be sorting midfield.

Jackie Treehorn, no matter what players Hibs sign from whatever team, they are AT LEAST making signings, whereby Hearts just seem to be getting one KB after another in the signing stakes.I`ll be glad when Hearts have signed a forward to take over from last seasons forward !!!!

#24 you have the nerve to call Hibs fans dense when your club have been pulling the wool over your eyes since Vlad took over, with the finances, promises of winning the league, European glory, World Cup Superstar signings, a new stand to hold all 50 million Hearts fans from Edinbrgh. People who live in glass houses etc.
36

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

03/07/2009 13:55:31
35 Please explain, what wool over my eyes? If you thought Hearts could seriously win the Champions league then you need to change to a dealer of less hardend drugs. The finances were an absolute mess due to the pieman, World cup signings, wasn't Vlad who said that but this publication for the feeble minded to buy into and still 3 years on the feeble minded hobbos are still going on about that. At the end of the day Vlad has attempted to do what no other club at any stage since the 80's has in wanting to end the domination of the filthy weegies. He went about it all wrong at the start but hindsight is a wonderfull thing, still won the Cup and split the OF though, when are hibs likely to do the same can i ask?
37

Hibernia,

03/07/2009 14:06:37
Yes wool over your eyes if you believe anything Vlad says.

Where the heck did I say that I thought Hearts could win in Europe? I didnt youve just made that up.

I have no idea when Hibs will split the OF or the cup but I certainly dont have ideas way above my station when it comes to the team I support.
38

jamboron,

Jackie I find it very rich you calling me a thicko, when you should be at the likes of CC Blooms, checking up on the sizes of other folks c()cks.... still whatever rocks your boat.. Beside Black was signed on a pre contract , which I already knew about , so only Suso has actually been signed since the transfer window opened & he`s more of a winger than a striker.

Rolland,

#42 What cup was that ? Ah that's correct the one you's haven't won for 108 years and the one we knocked you out of (again) this time not on a Sunny Sunday at hampden but in the rain at fester road.

We also failed to beat the hobos in the league yet still finished way above you in the league so not sure what your point is.

The Gorgie boys are in town -

'Fwasn't Vlad who said that but this publication for the feeble minded to buy into and still 3 years on the feeble minded hobbos are still going on about that.'

quote from The Times 15th Oct 2005

ROM Kaunas, the second city in Lithuania, comes news of a seismic shift in the power base of European football. It concerns Heart of Midlothian — yes, Hearts — and it is this: that they are soon to win the Champions League.
Yes indeed: European champions elect. Step aside Chelsea. And if we were not hearing it from the Abramovich of the Baltics, then we would not bother printing it.

This is the future, according to Scotland’s Abramovich clone: “Our goal has to be champions of Europe. I want us to be at the stage where to do anything else, to come back without the trophy, would be shameful. I’d like to do it quicker but I think we’re looking at three years. Nobody believes us. That’s fine. Three years should suffice.”

I suppose the Times are lying as well

61 That's a funny comment, 'diminishing derby record' hobbos won two games last season 1-0, two draws and a fabulous 0-2 win at fester road. That's an improvement on your derby record by a whole one game. I'm afraid it's going to take about 20 seasons worth of games for the hobbos even to get the statistics level assuming Hearts let you win 4 times a season hohoho no chance normal league service will be resumed next season 3 wins out of three for the Jamtarts
