HEARTS and Hibs played out a goalless draw in the first Edinburgh derby of the season this afternoon.
The Tynecastle side brought Jason Thomson in at right-back at the expense of his younger brother Craig, while Merouane Zemmama and SOl Bamba were missing for Hibs.

The two teams virtually cancelled one another out in the opening stages and it took fully 19 minutes before there wany real prospect of a goal, Christian Nade and Arvydas Novikovas combining to set up skipper Michael Stewart for a long-range effort that fizzed just wide of Graham Stack's right-hand post.

The home side came closer in 26 minutes when a corner frmo Novikovas was headed out of the danger aer by Chris Hogg, only for it to fall straight to Ian Black, who unleashed a dipping effort that looked set to test Stack, only for it to tke a deflection off a Hibs player and go behind for
a corner that came to nothing.

Hibs should have tested Janos Balogh as the half-time break appraoched when COlin Nish played a short ball into the patch of Stokes, but the Irishman couldn't get enough on it and it was easy for the Hearts keeper to collect at his right-hand post.

In pictures: Hearts 0 - 0 Hibs

As it happened: Hearts 0 - 0 Hibs

Driver tried to make the breakthrough seconds after tthe restarafter being released by Nade but the Enlishman's effort was easily dealt with by Stack.
They could have scored a spectacular effort just seconds later when Novikovas tired to beat Stack with an overhead kick, but the shot cannoned off Lewis Stevenson instead and way from danger.

Hearts were given time and space to create andother opportunity in 53 minutes when Jason Thomson lofted a ball high into the box, and it fell at exactly the right height for Black, but his glancing header was just inches away from the target.

Black then let fly with a powerful lef-foot effort that seemed certain to hit the back of the net, but Stack was well positioned to save.
Hibs brought Derek Riordan on to replace Benjelloun 11 minutes after the break and went with three up, the Scotland hitman being joined by Nish and Stokes.

The visitors then gave Hearts a scare when Novikovas gave up possession and David Wotherspoon charged forward to the 20 yard maerk and let fly with a thundering shot that took a deflection and came off the base of the post and Riodan was just too far away to beat Balogh to the rebound.

Balogh was called into actino again a couple of minutes later after Stevenson spotted a hole in the Hearts defence to feed Riordan through. The striker gratefully accepted and spun round to get a shot in that the Jambos keeper did well to get down to his right and tip away.

Riordan had certainly made a positive impact on proceedings for Hibs and Balogh again had to be alert to block a cross come shot from the Hibs player after a cross from Liam Miller.

Hearts had claims for a spot-kick turned down in stoppage time when a shot from Gary Glen was spilled by Stack and Jamie Mole went down under a challenge from the keeper as he tried to turn the loose ball home.

Hearts: Balogh, Wallace, Goncalves, Bouzid, J Thomson, Driver, Palazuelos, Black (Obua 73), Stewart, Novikovas (Glen 67), Nade (Mole 79). Unused subs: Kello, Kucharski, Mulrooney, C Thomson.

Hibernian: Stack, Stevenson, *Murray, Hogg, Wotherspoon, *Stokes, Miller, McBride, Rankin, Benjelloun (Riordan 56), Nish. Unused subs: Ma-Kalambay, Cregg, Thicot, Byrne, Galbraith, Hanlon.

Disappointed to have missed the game, a typical blood and thunder derby, the type that the punters thrive on.

When I heard the team news, must admit to being slightly apprehensive. Bamba at the back looked like a big loss but Ian Murray slotted in well and linked fairly well with Hogg. Zouma was always going to be a huge miss and the midfield looked totally dis-jointed in the first half without him.

All in all, quietly satisfied with a point. Ends a highly satisfactory first quarter.

Funny thing is though that a few Hibbies seemed to have internet connection problems last weekend which showed Hibs 11 (eleven) points clear of the BIG team. This computer virus must be spreading as my BBC sport connection still shows the league table as Hibs having an 11 point lead. Strange really, as I though that Hearts were supposed to be above Hibs by now.

Funny old game, eh?

I seem to have the same fault with my laptop.

No matter where I look on the internut I keep getting told that Hibs have 11 more points than The Team in Brown.

This cannot be right, Shirley? I was told on good authority that The Team in Brown were going to win today and move ahead of Hibs in the table.

Should i contact microsoft?

11 pts ahead of BIG(?!) team and unbeaten run are positives but this was abject stuff. Hearts are as poor as I have seen them for twenty years and with our players we should be doing better. All very well saying "Point is a point," but if we truly want to compete into 2010 we should beat teams as poor as Hearts.

Plus marks for Stack, Wotherspoon, Murray and Miller (a class act , Liam) - rest pretty mediocre and on a par with Hearts.

It has been a great first quarter. Let's push on and see where we are at Christmas.

PS My laptop is broken too - says 11 pts ahead Hertz?

Perhaps it was as a result of installing Feejit Filter on your your computer. I installed a similar thing in Flange Firewall. Whilst it's been effective in some ways, it seems to have left some discrepancies......

Curiously, I've just seen Rolland's bookie wandering down the street chuckling. He's clutching a large wad of school lunch vouchers......

Enjoying watching Hibs in the last half hour - Yogi's building a lovely football team there. Miller class, Stokes and Riordan some nie stuff and Wotherspoon an excellent young player.

Re: Stack

Isn't it such a relief that every corner/free kick isn't met with trepidation? Absolutely solid again.

The Team in Brown now no goals in last 3 games at swiney against us?

ps Minute's silence on the radio is a bit dull.

Missed the first half, which I believe was eye-bleedingly bad. Didn't look as if we were going to lose it in the second. Stick on penalty, but thems the breaks yams.

Definitely not a virus Dood. Saw it in the paper as well. Then again, could be just another incidence of anti-hertz media bias.

Time to wish good fortune to the teams playing for us this afternoon....especially those looking to go above hertz ;-D

So we seem to be clarifying here that Hibs are in fact NOT relegation fodder and are in fact 11 (eleven) points clear of the BIG team?

How did this happen?

I thought that we'd only signed Falkirk rejects, had a first division manager, had played lesser teams than the BIG team, were peg selling junkies etc etc etc?

Or is this perhaps not the case?

Discuss.

Nobody said that we were great today. Most of Scottish Football seem to be accepting that we've been the most entertaining team this season so far.

Today we were missing key players in our team and it showed. First half we were very poor. So it doesn't really say much for the BIG team in that they did not trouble Stack in this period.

Yes, the biggest game of the season, Hearts v Hibs.

Now that should make everyone worried.

Disappointed with Hibs today. We didn't get going until about 60 minutes and only looked dangerous when Riordan came on. I suppose when you replace Zemmamma with Rankin the result is fairly inevitable. Benji and Stokes were very inneffective. On the plus side, Hogg, Murray and Stack strolled it and Wotherspoon was our best player (I would have liked him to have played right midfield).

Poor performance but 21 points from 11 games, can't complain.

lets be honest Hibs were dire.Benji was a non contributeing passenger until replaced by Deek .That aside Hibs showed an inabilty to pass to a green shirt an were second to every ball.It seemed as if we were content to sit back defend an play for a draw?Which is always risky.Nade is not a bad player an Hearts are a good team an thought there captain had an excellent game an ran midfeild Nade however is not a loan striker or a prolific goal scorer an needs a partner he is a similar type to hesky an is good at hold up play .Thankfully Hearts dont have a partner for him or they would have burried us today A counted seven nill to them in corners at half time ? the only time they will get a sEven nill agin us .Any hoo back to my team we improved significntly with deeks ariveal an might have even snatched it Though if spoonys an nish delection wich stung the upright after a brilliant save had went in it wouldve been an injustice.Brilliant though not fair as i belive a draw given Hearts woefull inability to convert possesion into goal threats was the rightfull outcome .On the plus side if we can play this badly an escape with a goaless draw it agaurs well for the return fixture

Hibs were very poor 1st half, improved 2nd half when Riordan came on. For all of the Yams extra possession and shots, Balogh had to produce the best save of the game. From Hibs point of view, Wotherspoon was our Man of the Match, with good performances from Stack, Hogg and Murray and Riordan when he came on.

The Yams biggest threat came from long throw ins into the box to try and take advantage of our lack of height and physical presence with Bamba out, Hibs defended these very well.

3rd place and 21 points after the first round of games is good reading from Hibs point of view. As for the Yams, that was them playing as best as they could and still couldn't beat Hibs at home with us playing poorly. One point off 2nd bottom, they should be thankful that Falkirk are so bad.

With regards to your current username, could you explain the relevance? Is it like an open question in relation to Rangers fans? For example:

What was the crowd doing ripping up seats and hurling them on the pitch? Or,

What was the crowd doing mobbing and rioting in ANOTHER city centre? Or,

What was the crowd doing singing songs of bile and religious hatred?

Perhaps you could change it after UEFA finally act and ban Rangers 'fans' from following their team in Europe to.....

Where is the crowd.

The bare facts are that Hearts are exactly where we were after 11 games last season - 8th and playing worse than we are now - while Hibs are 3 places better off. Good work. Of course, we then finished the season 12 pts ahead of you...

62#Hearts was the better team look at the stats the only problem hearts have is we cant score goals! You really do live on planet lithuania. You don't have anyone that can score goals.Oh sorry i forgot about NADE THE HITMAN,he was well up for it today again.Mister consistancy himself, must half had at least 20 shots on goal, but the ref told him he was not allowed to score today as it was the turn of Driver the next legend to play for Scotland or is it England.Must not forget to take my medicine before i go to bed tonight

"Of course, we then finished the season 12 pts ahead of you..."

Yup, we were gash last year. Nobody is denying that.

Fact is that for hearts to get 12 more points than Hibs this season would involve Hibs not playing any more games. Even then I think it would be touch and go whether Hearts could get 33 points.

Good luck.

This is the poorest Hearts' team in years. And yet Hibs were playing the kind of anti-football, hit on the break that Rankers do in Europe. Hearts' lack of a goalscorers and a midfield that can keep possession is cronic - if only the fans would come together and get rid off Vlad.

You're really up against it tonight mate. The cream of the Yam posters are out in force and are all ganging right up against you.

How will you cope? Will you be able to sleep tonight? Will their cruel posts leave mental scarring?

You have to admire the eternal optimism of them though. Sorry, !!

Well hibees what happened? I thought you were going to give us a pumping? I even heard the old 7-0 bandied about.

Instead you turned up and played anti-football of the kind that gave the Edinburgh derby a bad name back in the Alex Miller days.

For a team in 2nd place I expected more, a lot more.

Yes, we have no goal threat but, that aside, we looked a much more accomplished side, dominating possession, chances created, shots on and off target, corners.

All you had to offer was a couple of efforts and a dirty stamp from 'i'm hard but honest' Murray.

Poor. Expect to be found out in the second round of fixtures with that type of one-dimensional, anti-football.

I have just watched the game again on TV and as I thought at the game Hearts bossed it all bar 10 or 15mins in the second half. Our old probs in front of goal let Hibs off the hook.
What I did see on the TV was your old pal Murray standing on Ian Blacks leg,a very deliberate foot placed on the back of his knee.I hope the SFA have a look after the butter wouldnt melt in my mouth stance over the tackle last week.Very disapointed in him as used to have a sneaking liking for him and his love of his club but now I think he is a sneak.
JT for life.

"Expect to be found out in the second round of fixtures with that type of one-dimensional, anti-football. "

Ah, it's the second round of fixtures now. I could have sworn that Hibs were going to be found out after the 1st round was completed.

1dimensional antifootball indeed.

Yes, the jambos' Ajax-like game of total football really showed Hibs up.

Get a grip.

No, you were NOT imagining it. Seriously cringeworthy stuff but rapidly becoming par for the course for our youngest ever contributor to these threads.

I blame the parents. The Edinburgh Evening News website should be added to the Parental Control Block on this wee mans PC.

Yes, yes, we only drew.

But we didn't have to win.

Jambos!!! Listen!!!!
Hibs were rubbish. Hearts were the better team today. Its the first time most of you will probably have seen the Hibs this season. Yogi for some reason decided to defend with one man(Nish) up front against a team who couldn't score against my 5 a side team. Had he continued with his 4 up front, I'm sure Hibs wouldv'e won comfortably. However, another point for the Jambos relegation battle.
99

ERIN GO BRAGH,

edinburgh 08/11/2009 00:22:14
Have to say, Yogi's change of formation didn't do Hibs any favours today. This showed hertz a modicum of respect they don't deserve as they are very poor. Their current league position bears this out. This was Hibs worst display of the season and yet they still looked more likely to score than hertz. Not a great game, but we will play better and lose this year. BTW, so long shabba, yer taxi is waiting !

For me all the derby did was prove yet again that fibs fans are complete d1cks, all of the above prove that for sure. Absolute bunch of junkie plooks of the highest order. Let's see where we are at the end of the season, that would be too sensible for most of these aholes, d1ldo dood being the widest of them all !!

Dear deluded Edinburgh fans, watched the match on TV, I've spent more interesting Saturday afternoons being trailed round the Princes Street shops with my wife. Two very average teams, one with a reasonable defence but an impotent attack the other hyped up but found wanting in most departments. Hibs looked a bit more enterprising when they introduced the Celtic reject, Hearts could have played until next Tuesday and still would not have scored. When Hearts took free kicks you could tell by looking at the players that they would not score and that they themselves did not believe they could score. Thank God ESPN showed the Arsenal game - now there was something that was worth watching, by the way if Hearts are still waiting for me to renew my season ticket then they are in for a very long wait.
