FORMER Hearts defender Takis Fyssas is preparing to retire as a player just 12 months after leaving Tynecastle, with sources in Athens saying he is likely to assume a new position with the Greek national team.
Fyssas, now 35, is the leading candidate to fill the Greek FA's new "team manager" role, an intermediary position liaising between coach Otto Rehhagel and the players.
The full-back returned to Panathinaikos last summer but failed to establish himself as a regular in the side and subsequently missed out on a place in his country's Euro 2008 squad.
Rehhagel held crisis talks with Vasilis Gagatsis, president of the Greek FA, yesterday following the national team's early Euro 2008 exit.
It was agreed that a mediating figure would help relations between the coach and his squad, and Fyssas is in line to be appointed in his new post later this month after accepting that his playing days are over.
