Frail believes Hearts need to 'overhaul whole squad'

HEARTS must revamp their first-team squad this summer in order to restore the club to a challenging position within the SPL, according to interim manager Stephen Frail.
Majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov has stressed a willingness to develop youthful academy products in the near future. However, Frail stressed that recruiting experienced campaigners is essential to augment the burgeoning youngsters at Riccarton.

The interim manager labelled Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Kilmarnock as "apathetic" and, following last Monday's loss at Falkirk, hopes the Tynecastle hierarchy will permit some serious surgery to the side over the close season.

Although particularly short on strikers at present, Frail conceded that all areas of the side require improvement.

"I think there's an overhaul of the whole squad needed," he said. "That doesn't mean bringing in bundles of players because we've done that before. Those who do come in must enhance the young lads we have because it's difficult out there for the kids.

"I thought young Jason Thomson acquitted himself quite well on Saturday. Gary Glen was a doubt on the morning of the game and, after 55 minutes, the physio wanted me to take him off. He was cramping up because he has a real problem with his calf, but I had to leave him on to try and get something from the match.

"We need players who can come in and help these lads develop. I think we need to freshen up in pretty much most areas. Hopefully we'll be allowed to do that."

Frail is encouraged by the squad's reaction since he assumed the role of caretaker manager on January 1 this year. "The on-field discipline has improved a lot since then," he continued. "I've got a reaction from them and that's all I wanted.

"From January until the split we were sitting third in terms of form. I'd like to think that's down to something I've done but it's also because of what the players done.

"We're disappointed to lose the last two games because we wanted to win them, but there was an apathy about Saturday's performance. Now we have to get a victory over Gretna tomorrow night."

Meanwhile, Romanov sent a tribute to Robbie Neilson yesterday as the defender enjoyed a memorable testimonial match between the current Hearts team and a select side from the club's 1998 and 2006 Scottish Cup- winning sides.

Romanov said: "Few modern players give the loyalty and commitment to their club that you have with Heart of Midlothian. You have captained Hearts, won a Scottish Cup winner's medal, played for Scotland at international level, scored a UEFA Cup game winning goal."

The Evening News can reveal that Julien Brellier did not appear in Neilson's game because he missed his flight to Edinburgh from Switzerland.

Lets just get the priorities in proper order...
First-The coaching staff needs dunted.
Second-We need the promise of a NEW manager to be fulfilled.
Third-We need about six first team players to come in and about the same number of the current squad to leave.

Ahhh there you go, jealousy is a sad thing eh?
I mean we may not be great but we still have some sort of hope of UEFA qualification. I seem to recall your mob applied but withdrew when it became obvious that you wouldnt even qualify for that.

I'm so upset at only qulifying for the intertattie... I relly wish my club had £40m+ debt, had its worst leauge placing for years, Didnt have a manager although being promised one for months now, Hasnt got a chairman with a brain the size of a pea and a mouth the size of the Forth..... I could go on & on but I'm just so jealous you see that I think it'll make me cry...

You just go on clutching at your tiny straws lad.. and laugh at club entering a competition that you cant qualify for anyway... Sad little boy.....

Arnie,

The players haven't covered themselves in glory this year but it is the tactics which have been the most disappointing aspect.

To often this season we have played one up front and then hit aimless balls in their direction which just tires the player out.

I think Banks, Karapidis, Berra, Cesnauskas, Kingston, Stewart, Driver are the spine of the team for next year but we badly need two decent full backs and two decent strikers.

As far as Palazuelos and Jonsson go, both are decent players but taking out a forward player to accommodate them has been the biggest mistake of the season.
18

Who?,

12/05/2008 12:50:57
Not exactly an earth shattering statement from Frail. In fact if there was a prize for stating the obvious then congrats Mr Frail- you've won!

A manager needs to get appointed.

The manager should have the final decision on which players stay and which players go.

While some people may buy or have bought a season ticket for next season i like many others haven't yet. It would be a better idea to do so on a game by game basis that way vlad will need to stick to his promises to keep the cash coming in.

No manager= no season ticket

After Saturday's successful jumble sale scam in the church hall (http://www.heartsfc.premiumtv.co.uk/...305765,00.html)we are pleased to announce that over £300 was raised that will go towards the float we need to open the UKIO Bankas branch here in Castle Street.

Can I please urge all supporters who have yet to renew their season tickets that we are in desparate need of the cash. Without your hard earned wages Mr Romanov's empire cannot function - the money has got to come from somewhere!

As a special incentive for all new accounts opened we will throw in a free satin reversable jacket - but only for the lucky first 400,000 who open an account.

47

GGTTH#1,

The reason Hearts are not in the Inter Tattie is

a) they fo not have a qualified coach and will not have a qualified coach by the time the tournament starts.
b) they were not high enough in the league to be considered.

If Hearts were able they would have applied.

Not too sure exactly what the Jambos have against this cup. It is a route to Europe that many clubs bigger than Hearts attempt to utilise. Main problem is the fact that it starts so early in the season making it very difficult to prepare for.

Any Jambos want to be a bit more specific on their issues with the Inter Toto or is it just bitterness you cant even qualify for that?
48

The Hallucinist,

"It is a route to Europe that many clubs bigger than Hearts attempt to utilise. Main problem is the fact that it starts so early in the season making it very difficult to prepare for".

It shouldn't be difficult to prepare for. Footballers play 1/2 games per week and train most days and are well paid for it.

Don't start making excuses already, just accept what everyone knows - hibs won't qualify for Europe!!
51

GGTTH#1,

12/05/2008 14:37:09
The point is that if Hearts could have been in it they would have. And my question is why do the Jambos have an issue with this cup?

Funny how they were going to apply but pulled out after it became apparent that a qualified coach was required despite the fact Vlad had already promised one for the new season? Hmmm seems to me he knew even then there would be no qualified coach in place?

"It shouldn't be difficult to prepare for. Footballers play 1/2 games per week and train most days and are well paid for it."

This is true and that is why clubs have a thing called pre-season training. It is used to build up players fitness levels etc after a summer break. Unfortunately when entering the Intertoto there is very little time for preseason and Brian Kerr has already missed on holiday!

I for one dont like the intertattie cup as its another way to reward teams with european football without having earned the right. I also dont think its fair to give a team who finish second in the cup the chance to play in europe (this place should go to the forth placed team in the league if need be). Europe should be for the best teams in the league to represent and for cup winners. If this was the case and the Hobo's did come fourth and qualified for europe then well done BUT why should teams be rewarded for failure.

If anyone is looking for a pension can I recommend the one we are currently providing.

If you are looking for an easy life and/or an easy way to enter Britain then the Hearts Life-Plan is just for you!

We can pay you over £10,000 every week but without the need for any pointless medicals.

Don't take our word for it, read these recommendations from some very satisfied clients....

"When I'm no longer playing, I know my family will be financially secure" Mr Beslija, Belgium

"Even when everyone said I was too old, Hearts were prepared to supplement my pension with an outrageous offer."

MTG that is all very well but if HEarts secured a place in the UEFA cup through the inter tattie then im sure you wouldnt be complaining. At the same time though I would not consider the clubs in the UEFA to be the best in Europe. Generally they are the 3rd 4th 5th and 6th teams from various leagues so if there is an opportunity to let a few more in through the back door a la inter tatty then so be it. This is its last season anyway. Definitely dont think cup runners up should go to Europe especially p1sh like Gretna and QOS.
55

GGTTH#1,

You're right its not the best way of getting into europe. The SFA b*lls up getting the 4th place into europe as they put the changes in too late to UEFA - hence QOS are there even if Rangers beat them. Apparently this is the last year of the Intertoto - some big teams in England and abroad have been in it and got far (think a spainish team got to the final) so it can't be that bad.
Hibs will struggle as they will probably play a Swedish team half way through their season while we are still pre-season - not an excuse just fact. Still think it is better than playing English prem teams in friendlies. I remember Hibs beating Balckburn 3-0 and calling Shearer a waste of money in a preseason and they went on (i think) to win the prem league that year.

re 60 - I wouldnt be happy if we enterd the intertattie cup and certainly go to any of the games, i admit though that if we got into the UEFA cup because of it i would go to those games (hippocrite, yes)

There's no disguising any longer that in view of our results, I was more than a little over-optimistic that we might, just might, once again (what with all the money spent etc) have a team that'd rival the likes of Kilmarnock and other sides on the up and up. However, it was not to be and I really have to admit finally that things are
"EVERY BIT AS BAD AS THEY AT FIRST APPEARED".

#86 There's always going to be a few Jambos who slate everything Hibs do regardless of logic. I'm sure you'll agree that that sort of childish pettiness isn't exactly unique to the Jambos!
Personally, I don't agree with the inter tattie. It'd make much more sense to just allocate the extra UEFA spots to other countries. But as long as it is there, I don't see why you wouldn't enter it. Even if you don't qualify, it's got to be a better pre-season to play matches that count for something than the usual can't-quite-be-bothered 35-substitution extravaganzas that most pre-season friendlies are...

for the record regarding my views of the intertattie cup, i will stick by my opinion in saying i dont like it. I just dont see the point in rewarding failure.

i am not having a dig at the hobo's but the attitude of "ah well if we dont make 3rd then we can at least try the intertattie" is the right way to go and the same would apply if it was dundee utd, aberdeen or anyone else even hearts.

Are you insinuating that these braindeads are in fact Hobo,s alter ego,s kidding on they are Lithuanians for a wee chuckle at the expense of us "heed in the sand" Jambo,s.

Surely not,why would anybody waste so much time and effort on such a futile scheme.

No you must be mistaken Jambo through & through.

Actually you are wrong there. I am not a gormless cretin and I had you sussed within 2 weeks of joining this forum. You just denied it for so long that even now you still think you have everyone fooled.

ANother thing. What posesses someone to make up a fake nickname, use broken English, post every day with the sole purpose as to attempt to wind other people up????? I mean have you actually sat down and thought about why you did it?? I am genuinely confused as to why? 18 MONTHS!!! 18 MONTHS!! And if you profess to carry it on day after day you really are totally and without doubt PATHETIC.

You must have THEE saddest life in the world. You and Riley (if you are not him) really REALLY need to think about your actions and give up with this total and utter useless campain against people on this forum.

GROW UP!!!!

Beggars belief to be honest.

A bit of footie banter is whats its all about surely.

But the mindless rubbish that this teet and her girlie friend Denise have been spouting is beyond me.
Perhaps we should all invade the Hobo threads in some guise and drivel and drool all day long on there.

Nah lifes to short.

Serg. One last thing.

If you are sitting there considering opening a new account with the EN and making a new user name so you can carry on with this pathetic charade. Just think about it for 5 mins. Do you really want to spend another 18 months not living life and spending your days glued to this site? Are you really that sad that you ARE considering it??

I genuinely hope not dude.

I have been watching hearts since 1950 and have seen some great hearts teams and some poor ones. The team on Saturday must be the worst I have seen, most of that team would not have got a game in the reserves in the 50's or 60's.The will never get anywhere until there is a good uk manager.

Back to the topic.

Teams in dire need of a overhaul. Its blatantly obvious who deserves to be in the team and who doesn't. Sort the core of the team out and build round that with either the good youngsters or buy in 2 or 3 players with proven track records and have experience.

A legend in his bedroom right enough.

The wee scumbag has had zero cred for a while now and it is of no suprise that when the screw started to turn the weasel had no option but to come clean.

If it put is fantasy,s into something more worthwhile then perhaps it may do something good in the world.

Perhaps it will heed this good advice and maybe come back here one day and say thankyou..

Yeah mate.Perhaps we should count ourselves lucky that we only really have the Pilton fake and the crazyman Biley a.k.a Dublinhibs to put up with.

Its a shame sometimes when these threads end up going pear shaped but i suppose its the same as the goings on,on the pitch.

Still, its nice to see another loony running a top football club, poor Man City fans.
