HIBS are adamant the cloak of silence they have thrown around their hunt for a new manager won't be lifted until they reveal the identity of Mixu Paatelainen's successor.
As the search for a fourth manager in three years entered its second week, club officials were still remaining tight-lipped, refusing to comment on any of the individuals on an ever-growing list of possible candidates.

However, the Evening News understands Falkirk boss John Hughes remains the leading contender to take the Easter Road hot-seat although another of his former clubs, Coca Cola Championship outfit Swansea, are also on the look-out for a new manager following Roberto Martinez's move to Wigan.

And the Bairns have paved the way for Hibs to make an approach for Hughes, signalling they won't stand in his way should another club come calling, with the 44-year-old having hinted he feels that, after six years with Falkirk, it's perhaps time for a change.

Falkirk's managing director George Craig said: "No approach has been made. At the moment, it's all speculation. John has been making it known maybe he's reaching that stage in his managerial career when it's time to see if he can face another challenge.

"If an opportunity was to come along for him I would consider it. We'd be understanding. I hope that between ourselves and John and whatever club came in for him we'd be able to come to an amicable settlement."

Although known as a rugged, no-nonsense defender, Hughes has won many admirers for the passing style of football he's demanded at Falkirk where, despite staving off relegation on the final day of the season, he also guided the club to the final of the Homecoming Scottish Cup and the semi-finals of the Cooperative Insurance Cup.

As such, Falkirk qualified for Europe for the first time in their history but, it is understood, the former Hibs skipper would turn his back on that prospect to become manager of the club he's supported throughout his life.

Hibs have promised to behave in a "professional and courteous way" towards all applicants for the post, the club anxious to avoid becoming embroiled in the feverish speculation which always descends at such a time, determined that when they do, finally, unveil their choice it will be their first-choice.

Meanwhile, it has been claimed Hibs have signed Morrocan internationalist Youness Bengelloun from Olympiakos Nicosia.

Not the first time a Scottish club board has signed a player without the managers say so, but surely the first time a board has signed a player without a manager?

Or has the new manager requested the player? Curious.

Think Hughes will be a decent appt for Hibs.

However Falkirk abandoned the free flowing football this year - they played a more direct game as results were need more than passing football. It worked.

Why are the Evening News using a picture of Easter Road with the old main stand to illustrate the story???

Nearly as bizarre as Jambo's finding the need to comment on Hibs stories.

The EN published this picture (at the request of Hibs board) to ensure that there is no fan backlash when more players than Fletcher are sold this summer. They need funds for 2 new stands. The cost of the new East Stand has jumped by 50%, but there is a 2 for 1 offer at the moment from most builders.

Jones - £800,000
Fletcher - £3.0 million
Riordan - £1.5 million
McCormack - £50,000
O'Brien - £3
Keenan - 50p

Last year McGhee bottled taking the Hearts job - to big for him -Now he's off to Aberdeen which seems strange as he said all last year that Murderwell were the third best team in SPL.
Makes you wonder where Hibs are in the managerial pecking order - clearly well after Hearts, Dundee Utd and aberdeen. It now looks like they may be below Motherwell.

Yes, you're right. The Mark McGhee scenario is indeed strange.

The same Mark McGhee who has made a name for himself as a manager of no principles or loyalty whatsoever, who has walked away from just about every job he has held when another club came calling.

Only he saw sense when Hearts came calling..........

How strange indeed.

Im a bit confused as to who has signed this player, Mixu, the board or the new manager? Of course, the Scotsman doesnt seem to think this warrants attention and to make things even more baffling reports "it has been claimed", what does that mean exactly, who has claimed it?

Surely the guy has signed or he hasnt, not sure how they can get away with publishing this as a claim with no source cited and no info on the player. Maybe a quit phonecall to ER or your sources at the club would help?

DAILY RECORD STORY

HIBS have snapped up Moroccan midfielder star Youness Bengelloun - despite the Easter Road manager's chair being vacant.

The Leith outfit parted company with Finnish boss Mixu Paatelainen just over a week ago.

But that hasn't stopped them from snapping up Bengelloun from Cypriot club Olympiakos Nicosia.

The 26-year-old Paris-born ace has already been given the grand tour of the Easter Road club's facilities and will join them after he plays for his country in two World Cup qualifiers later this month.

Bengelloun has been far travelled during his career and has featured for a variety of clubs including Paris St Germain, Neuchatel Xamax, Alaves and Panserraikos.
________________________________________________

If you read his playing record he has a bit of a chequered career but is a current Moroccan international (like Benji !!!!!!!)

At the very least you would think something would be on the clubs official site ? (perhaps it is I haven't visited). Just think this is normal practice when signing a player, you would think more could / would be done to validate these claims.

#41 Thanks for the info not sure we really need another defender/defensive midfielder with Bamba, Murray and Thicot all able to do the same job.

It just strikes me as strange that this paper didnt seem to know anything about it. Surely the Scotsman, Edinburghs paper, should be able to get some better info on this guy and whether he is officially joining and again, who actually signed him?

#42 Thats my thoughts aswell but theres nothing on the club site, all just seems a little odd and I would still like to hear from the club or another reliable source if he has signed and who decided on it?
46

I've heard that Jim Gannon (ex Stockport manager)has been interviewed for the job. He did a good job there with little money to throw around, has a reputation for playing passing football and believes in bringing on home-grown youth players rather than highly paid mercenaries. Worth a shot perhaps?

#52 Care to explain that comment given league position? Don't forget Hearts scraped a number of results last season but overall performances were not good so there is no real reason to feel confident for next season, especially as main players will not be there and there seems little sign of quality recruits to replace those departed.
55

Rolland,

08/06/2009 15:42:32
#55 Gladly, Csaba took a bunch of players and got results out of them, the competition have / will be weaker, you'll loose Fletcher and Jones, with no budget to replace. There is little sign at the moment, but at least we've made a signing and Black is a solid decent pro. We ain't the far off a decent striker and Glen is a year older more experienced now.

Yogi nearly took Falkirk down I suspect he will go one better next season with hibs.

Let's get McGhee's motives clarified.

Despite what he said, the following was a post from last year...

"Supporter,Hamilton 22/05/2008 12:58:07
Notice there's no comment quoted from McGhee himself - I spoke to Leitch at the weekend he said then that the Hearts stories are all BS! McGhee WAS given an offer way back i.e. a discussion on his potential salary and there hasn't been any further contact because a) McGhee said he wasn't even thinking of anything until the end of the season and b) Romanov had to be told the "conditions" McGhee had attached. Also - you're not forgetting the Celtic factor I hope = according to Chris McCart's son (McCart is now at Celtic) if he wins the League Strachan has said he will probably quit and there's no way McGhee will do anything until that's sorted 'cause he wants Celtic."

And from the "News(sic) of the World" around the same time...

"GORDON STRACHAN wants best mate Mark McGhee to replace him at Celtic. That's why Motherwell gaffer McGhee last week turned his back on a move to Hearts.

The Fir Park chief announced he had a change of heart on the way to the airport to meet Jambos owner Vladimir Romanov.

But Sport of the World can reveal it was Strachan who convinced McGhee to stay. Strachan could leave Parkhead at the end of next season — and will put McGhee's name in the frame."

Win some, lose some, eh..?
79

Bleeding Heart,

08/06/2009 20:06:38
#75 "pundit" - I think Romanov DID mention a "war-chest" of that magnitude.

And indeed, HMFC did spend around £14M.

The problem, however, was two-fold. Firstly, the money was largely raised by racking-up the club's borrowings from £22M to £36M.

Comrade Romanov's personal fortune appears to have remained substantially intact.

Secondly - and worse still - the monies were squandered by Romanov whilst he spent three years playing real-life fantasy football.

What Burley, or someone like him, could have achieved with that kind of financial backing we can only speculate. But it does leave one just a tad miffed at dear old Vladimir...
80

Bleeding Heart,

08/06/2009 22:14:58
#84 - No, not solely on transfer fees (although Beslija cost £900K or thereabouts), but a substantial amount on wages.

As for the rest...?
