Published Date: 16 August 2008
Colin Nish grabbed a glory double, his first one of the quickest ever goals in the SPL, as Hibs edged out Falkirk in a five goal thriller at Easter Road this afternoon.
Mixu Paatelainen's side twice led by two goals only for Bairns striker Michael Higdon to score two of his own. But it was Paul Hanlon's first goal for Hibs early in the second half which earned the Edinburgh club their first win of the season althoug
h the woodwork came to the home side's rescue in the final minute as substitute Mark Stewart crashed a tremendous shot off goalkeeper Andy McNeil's left hand post.

Hibs got off to the perfect start with the opening goal coming in only 23 seconds as Nish, guilty of a bad miss at Kilmarnock on the opening day of the season, dug a pass from Dean Shiels out from under his feet before skipping past Lee Bullen and prodding the ball between Falkirk goalkeeper Robert Olejnik and his near post.

It was just what the home fans, anxious following a miserable run of pre-season results and that setback at Rugby Park needed, and you could almost see the confidence pour through Mixu Paaatelainen's under-fire players.

Steven Fletcher should have done better after robbing Bairns defender Darren Barr of possession but, with Nish and Dean Shiels in support, the Scotland striker opted to go for goal himself although his weak shot was never going to trouble Olejnik who then dived on a low cross from Shiels to prevent Hibs doubling their lead.

A clever backheel from Nish, who was leading the line superbly, gave Alan O'Brien the opportunity to display his blistering pace but a heavy first touch allowed Jackie McNamara to retrieve the situation before Olejnik pulled off a point-blank stop to deny Fletcher.

O'Brien slammed a shot into the sidenetting before Nish clamed his second goal of the game in the 24th minute, dropping to his knees to nod home a Paul Hanlon cross which had eluded everyone in a packed Falkirk penalty areas.

The Bairns had posed little threat but they shocked Hibs by pulling a goal back in the 29th minute as Higdon was left all alone to head home Gerard Aafjes cross.

John Rankin should have restored Hibs two goal lead a couple of minutes later when O'Brien left him with only Olejnik to beat but somehow the midfielder drilled his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Falkirk should have punished Hibs for that miss when Russell Latapy picked out Kevin McBride only a few yards out but he was unable to connect with the ball as the Bairns suddenly burst into life, taking the game to the Easster Road side which had begun to display a distinctly nervous disposition as had the home support.

Those nerves were soothed, however, as Hanlon claimed his first goal for Hibs, the 18-year-old stooping to head home from close-range after Nish had nodded a Shiels free-kick back across goals just two minutes after the interval and only a terrific save from Olejnik as he again denied Fletcher kept the Bairns' interest in this game alive.

But again Hibs were made to pay in the 53rd minute as Jackie McNamara threaded a superb pass through to Higdon who found room between Rob Jones and Chris Hogg to rifle the ball into the roof of the net for his second goal of the game.

Olejnik pulled off a superb one-handed save high to his left as his personal battle with Fletcher continued, the Hibs striker left shaking his head in disbelief as the Falkirk goalkeeper prevented him from scoring for the third time.

Fletcher had yet another chance when Nish, far beyond the back post, headed O'Brien's cross into his path but on this occasion the 21-year-old fired wide and only the woodwork prevented him claiming his first goal of the season as his left-foot shot for once beat Olejnik only to clip the top of the bar.

McNeil was forced to push a low shot from substitute Mark Stewart round the post as the Bairns pressed for an equaliser, Higdon just squeezed out at the near post as he went in search of his hat-trick.

Hibs: McNeil, Van Zanten, Hogg, Jones, Hanlon, Shiels (Chisholm 90), Keenan (Murray 74), Rankin, O'Brien (Campbell 86), Nish, Fletcher. Subs not used: Grof, Yantorno, Morais, Canning.

Falkirk: Olejnuik, McNamara, Barr, Bullen, Aafjes, Arfield, Cregg, McBride, J Stewart (M Stewart 72), Higdon, Latapy (Robertson 71). Subs not used: Fliners, McCaffrey, Gibb, Staunton, Mitchell.

Referee: Willie Collum.

I wasn't there. How did Rob Jones measure up? Seemed to get beat in the air and caught out of position too much last season.

Great to see big Nish & O'Brien play so well today. Now hopefully the boo-boys, doubters, doom & gloom merchants & Yams will cease their inane ramblings.

Best display of the season so far from Hibs. How good could it have been if we had a manager. Rankin contributed othing but was left on the park. We were a man short in the midfield. Hogg lost his man for the 2nd goal.

On the plus side. Keenan was always busy and had a good game in a midfield deep holding role. O'Brien continued his improvement and is now enjoying himself. More to come from him as his confidence grows.

Hanlon, still gets passed to easily on occasion but had a good game. Van Zanten is becoming a very valuable player for Hibs. Good defensively, likes to attack and still finds the time and the energy to come inside and partner Jones in the middle of the defence.

Jones, another great game. Sheils, not at his best just now but will play through it. Fletcher unlucky not to score.

Typical Hibs, played some really nice stuff, and the next minute the defense is imploding.

Still 3 goals (should have been at least 7), and O'Brian played very well. He received a standing ovation when replaced in 89 mins.

The defense still needs to be sorted out and will cost us dearly if the manager can't get them to work as a unit. However 3 points in the bag and we're now ahead of Hearts in the table. Normal service now resumed. :-)

4* different game than the one i was at with some of the things you have said. Jones a like the big man but today they scored 2 goals 1st a cross from wide free header, goal, 2nd right through the middle of our defence, goal. Rankin not saying had his best game should have scored but then again how many chances did we miss, rankin done alot of work and covered most of the pitch. O'Brien my man of the match (never thought i would say that) outstanding crosses and covering back.

Agree with most of your comments but can't say I am overly impressed with Keenan. He did little in this game for me and throughout the game there was a huge void between the Hibs defence and the 2 forwards. i.e. the Falkirk midfield were able to dominate that space due to the ineffectual midfield of Hibs - particularly Keenan and Rankin.

It was the first goal that Hogg left the ball with Higden behind him.

Hibs were in sublime mode at times today. Should have been 5-1 at half time. Second half was more even, but Falkirk were never worth a point. A bit like the Yamz at the Riot Dome.

Private Pike,

Keenan was often involved after the first 15 minutes. He was playing in front of the back four and I thought had a good game. Up to now I thought he was a bit like Rankin. ie too lightweight and not enough ability to compensate. But I was pleased with him today. A bit to go yet I'll agree.

Hogg certainly played a part in conceding the first goal but he was not alone. Falkirk were given too much time on the ball to pick out an easy cross. The second goal was down to Hogg, it seemed to me, when he lost his man and Jones was unable to cover in time.

At first I thought Mixu showed again today that he cant read a game but then I read the comment at #7 and maybe Rankin did have a good game. Maybe I've got it all wrong. Maybe I wasn't at the match. Maybe I dreamt it all.

Don't think so.

Great result, first and foremost. For a team seeming bereft of confidence, the result was the most important thing. However, the performance was excellent. Following on from the comments above, some of the players who were written off prematurely in my opinion were excellent.

O'Brien in particular was awesome. His speed and ability to drive was Hibs biggest weapon today. I appreciate it's still early, but keep that up and we'll have the fans favourite we were promised.

Agree that Hogg didn't do as well as he should with both goals, but I felt that Jones was equally to blame, especially with the second, however, a wins a win. Hopefully that's the monkey off the back and the doom and gloom boys will now get off the lads backs and support them.

#13 just to say dont just look at the ball pal watch the work rate that some players do not saying Rankin is top class but the work he does is valuable. How can we even look to say anything against Mixu the team should have scored 6 or 7 but the chances were not taken and you then start to fall deeper and defend as not to give another goal away. #14 agree with you weak through the middle of defence today.

Well done the Hibs.

As a JT I want to see both teams chalenging, without the inane comments and humourless jibes that have percolated into the threads these days.

No doubt the bigots and Stuart Dougal haters will have their say over there but it just makes it better when we are both fighting, metaphorically, after seeing some of todays comments, for a high place in the league.

Roll on the derby, it might be third place we are fighting for but so what.

Sinsible thread so far, shock, horror!

Did not make the game today, could not even listen to it on the radio! Open mike (think thats what its called now)? shoite or what!

Good result today, maybe Nish had a good kick up the bahooka with the Pinua signing? with good competition for that area thats what was needed. Any chance of a signing or two in defence to sort that lot out?

#14 Dood (and others)

It seems that somebody has finally explained to O'Brien that its possible to sometimes run with the ball directly at the opposition goal and not always towards the corner flag. Why, sometimes by running into the box he will have a direct shot at goal and score or get brought down and win a penalty. That's the difference in his play plus, in the second half, he was even covering back and tackling.

I agree, he's also a confidence player though. He came into a honking team at a honking time due to his injury last season. High expectations from the punters and I just don't think he coped with it.

Punters sometimes forget that managers see players every day and therefore see things that we don't. Alan O'Brien must have shown something to Mixu to get a second chance - here's hoping he takes it. He certainly is a player on the up just now.

I've just seen the goals on Setanta. Ist goal Jones at the back could maybe have done better butit was a superb cross and sometimes you just have to admit that it were worth a goal.

2nd goal. As I said yesterday Hogg lost his man and it was impossible for Jones to get across in time. So, to all Hogglovers are you content to see Hibs lose goals and points in your blind loyalty to a liability like Hogg?

Canning must be given a chance with Jones. Jones would get even better with a steady partner and would not have to be forever covering two positions. Van Zanten is also to be found trying to cover for Hogg.

28

HIBEESTILLIDIE,

Hawick 17/08/2008 19:08:45
#28 come on now pal Hogg is a better player than Jones, I like them both but for me Hogg is the better 1 and would be in my team every week. player of the season for us last year. Jones was well good first season 8 or so goals plus excellent displays, last season not his best not much of a goal return dodgy at times in defence. This is a new season though so hope his all round form comes back and Hoggy keeps his form going from last year.

There is nothing better than the East Terrace singing Jones always believe in Jones!
29

Private Pike,

Jones and Hogg. Second goal for Falkirk. Each had a man to mark.
Jones, covering the channel and making sure his man was in front of him. Hogg, wanders forward and leaves Hignett between him and the goal. The ball comes through, easy pass now that Hogg isn't where he should be, and Hignett has a clear run in on goal.

Now you might not see this when you watch it although 99% of suporters will. But one thing ilustrates the difference in attitude between Jones and Hogg.

Hogg, after making the mistake ambles back while Jones sees what has happened and busts a gut to get across to cover and almost makes it.

Incidently no one asked me who my player of the year was last season.

Never mind, lets hope the team can score more goals than Hogg gives away.

#30 - I'm not wanting to start bickering with a fellow Hibbie after a good weekend, but......

Your AntiHoggism is becoming fairly tiresome. Yes, he makes mistakes, who doesn't? However, you seem grateful to punce on every little mistake he makes and gleefully castigate him afterwards.

Would you just give it a rest please. Yes, you don't fancy him as a player. Most of us actually do. Hence why he was voted player of the season. Because most of us rate him. Rate him higher than Jones, who in my opinion still drags Hogg out of position far too often with his poor positional awareness.

But that's just my opinion. I'm not a football guru, just a mere punter who watches the team every week. But then you're obviously an expert, eh?

I'm not having a bash, just give the guy a break and maybe respect that others have opinions on players as well without the need to rubbish them.

Hi Dood
I don't watch the team every week, just the home games.

What I give you is my opinion but you tell me its tiresome and I should stop. Yet, you not only give us your opinion but claim that most Hibs supporters agree with you. You know, most Hibs supporters I know agree with me so don't let's go down that road.

One difference between us is, that for this season, I have decided to only castigate Hogg for particular incidents. You seem happy not to address the issue but rather to offer general statements which require no proof and for which you offer no evidence.

Anyway, we are both Hibs supporters, and I have up to now always enjoyed reading your comments.

I get upset when I see a Hibs player consistently costing us goals and points but I do respect those who have a different opinon to me as we all want the best for our team.
35

Neutral Observer,

Regarding the Hogg debate. Hogg is, in my opinion, a good player but he needs to concentrate better. Its no good being a top man for 90% of the game if, during the other 10%, dreamy play costs the team goals. Jones has different qualities and I like his committment and ability to step forward and meet balls in the air that are fired from the opposition half.

Well done to the Hibees, bit worrying about the two goals we lost. And yes, I think Jonesy was at fault.

But we had plenty of chancees, I'd rather have chances than nae chances.

Good things to take from the game were:
O'Brien - getting better, keep it up son.
Fletch - he WILL get more goals, patience.
Keenan - get match fit and you will do well.
Hanlon - love the badge kissin for yer Da!
Van Z - he's beginning to settle.
