FALKIRK 2
McCann 3, Arfield 89
HEARTS 1
Stewart (72)
AFTER hauling themselves level, Hearts succumbed to a late Scott Arfield goal as their recent encouraging run of form stuttered slightly in the misty Falkirk drizzle. Michael Stewart had equalised Neil McCann's opening goal and Csaba Laszlo's side seemed certain to leave with a point, but Arfield's 89th-minute intervention was a cruel blow to the visitors.

Hearts recovered from an insipid first half to restore parity and dominated the second 45 minutes. A late Falkirk attack appeared harmless until Arfield emerged with a well taken winner minutes from full-time.

McCann's debut goal had accorded his side a justified lead at the interval. He wasn't the sole debutant on the glistening Falkirk Stadium surface. Adrian Mrowiec appeared for the first time in a Hearts shirt since joining on loan from FBK Kaunas. Inside three minutes, one of his predecessors made an instant impact. Graham Barrett scarpered past Lee Wallace with consummate ease and his low cross, which clipped Christophe Berra, landed kindly for McCann to stroke beyond Marian Kello from eight yards. Tynecastle may hold a place in his heart, but the winger wasn't for showing sentiment.

Hearts' reply was Larry Kingston's impromptu effort which Robert Olejnik palmed for a corner. Initially the visitors' rhythm was disrupted due to Falkirk's versatile 4-3-3 formation, which reverted to 4-5-1 whenever they ceded possession. Gradually Stewart began to assert himself and on 21 minutes an equaliser seemed certain when he executed a one-two with Mrowiec inside the opposition penalty area. The Pole steadied himself for a strike which eluded Olejnik but Jackie McNamara's sound positional sense allowed him to clear.

Referee Steve Conroy's decisions were often curious in the first period, none more so than the refusal to caution Arfield for a clear dive in the penalty area after knocking the ball past Berra. The thought arrived that Arfield would have been instantly booked and nationally derided thereafter had he been wearing a maroon shirt.

The game continued to simmer with Conroy hardly evincing control. On 40 minutes, Saulius Mikoliunas chased a through ball and slid into a 50-50 challenge with the advancing Olejnik. The Lithuanian was perfectly entitled to do so but collided with the Falkirk goalkeeper in the process. Having seemed to view the incident as the fair contest it was, Conroy belatedly booked Mikoliunas fully 90 seconds later as Olejnik received treatment. Understandably, this roused fury amongst travelling fans.

Stewart booted the ball behind the home goal as the half-time whistle sounded, summing up Hearts' frustration. They had suffered in the final third due to a lack of numbers and the isolation of lone striker Jamie Mole was doing little to alleviate the problem. He was replaced by Christian Nade early in the second half as the visitors began a period of sustained pressure on the home goal.

Falkirk were fortunate to escape when Berra appeared to be tugged back inside the penalty area. The hosts' overall performance betrayed no signs of their bottom-of-the-league status but for long periods of the second half they defended in numbers. Revitalised Hearts had assumed the attacking impetus and one sensed a goal was coming. When it did, it was quite spectacular.

Kingston's lofted free-kick was headed clear by Darren Barr, however the Falkirk players loitering on the edge of their penalty box remained static. Stewart didn't. He pounced to drive a glorious finish low into the net, taking the deserved acclaim from delirious Hearts supporters in the aftermath.

Steve Lovell, McCann's replacement, and Lee Bullen both watched shots fly wide of Kello's goal but it took until the final minute of regulation play for Falkirk to secure victory. Hearts perhaps sensed their job was done, however substitute Steve Lovell rolled the ball into Arfield's pass for a calm finish from 18 yards low to Kello's right.

Falkirk (4-3-3): Olejnik; McNamara, Barr, Bullen, Scobbie; Arfield, McBride, O'Brien; Barrett, Higdon, McCann. Subs: Flinders, Cregg 82 (for O'Brien), Latapy, Aafjes, Lovell 65 (for McCann), Stewart 84 (for Barrett), McCaffrey.

Hearts (4-4-1-1): Kello; Jonsson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Mrowiec, Karipidis, Stewart, Mikoliunas; Kingston; Mole. Subs: MacDonald, Palazuelos 88 (for Karipidis), Nade 51 (for Mole), Makela, Thomson, Ksanavicius 51 (for Mikoliunas), Rapnik.

Referee: Steve Conroy.

Attendance: 5968.

Berra must be the worst appointed captain I have ever seen at Tynecastle ( Take the dosh if it is still there), Wallace send him to easter rd where he belongs, nade very poor, Having said just looked at the league position and they say it never lies, that's why we are Edinburghs BIG TEAM.

usual half-wits in evidence, not least the imbecile BTO who says hearts lost "in a shameful way". the word 'shameful' would strike me as a word which could describe a lot of things, hearts losing this game would not be one, but hey-ho, if BTO says it was shameful then i suppose it must be the case, on some level.

wasn't at the game but going by the report above...

* unpunished act of cheating by opposing player. no surprise.

* mysterious booking for mikoliunas for fair challenge. no surprise.

* unforthcoming penalty for hearts for strong claim. no surprise.

it's quite, quite remarkable that neil mccann can somehow conjure up a goal vs hearts after about 1 minute, considering the amount of 'pitch time' he had during his second spell with hearts. he managed to tap about a million pounds out of hearts during that spell for next to no return for us. first game against us and he scores before you can say "injury prone chancer". the irony hit me like a ton of bricks.

so we've lost the game, fair enough. if it was deserved then it was deserved, if it wasn't then it wasn't. it's not the first or last game we will lose this season.

personally i'm getting tired of referring to dodgy refereeing decisions. not that i don't want to refer to them, it's just that i'm getting weary of having to refer to them because they just keep on coming. the league season is only 5 games old and yet we've had a pile of them already.

i can accept losing, i can accept losing even if hearts have been unlucky. i'm finding it very difficult to keep having to accept all the other kicks in the dish that happen to players like miko and the unpunished diving which goes on against us.

Diggers Dog,

I only normally read the comments, but thought I would post for a change. Just back from Falkirk. The result was a travesty. An insipid first half performance from both teams saw Falkirk score their only chance from a dreadful Wallace mistake.

Second half we almost completely dominated, particularly after Mole went off and both Nade and Ksanavicius came on. Kingston was moved out to the right and was 100% more effective as he had been dreadful up till then. Conway denied us a stonewall penalty when Berra was pushed in the box when just about to head it in. Great finish from Stewart who was the best player on the park and it looked like being a draw until another woeful bit of defending from Wallace saw Falkirk steal it.

Overall I think we have the makings of a really good team, if only we had at least one more striker and a left-back (surely anyone at Kaunas could be better?). Falkirk despite the result were pretty awful and I genuinely think are relegation contenders as they simply can't be that lucky every week. As a final note, Eggert had a tremendous game at right back. Shame about Wallace.

Another learning curve for Csaba and the lads.
I think he got it wrong in the 1st half,Mole again isolated up on his own.
Is it coincidence that when Larry plays bad so do the team.

Wallace poor defending once again cost us the game.Falkirk scored in 3 mins but Wallace had already been beaten easily twice by that time(2nd time led to the goal)
IMO Wallace/Miko/Karipidas/Kingston &Mole were all very poor. Stewart was our best player & Nade was good when he came on.
Although dominated the 2nd half /denied a 'stonewall'penalty no real complaints.

#MROWIEC looked a decent player but not a wide left or right midfielder as deployed today

you can't have an open and honest debate on here, it's not possible. i openly admit to not having been at the match, serg pretends he's a jambo who was at the match (shock), and yet it's the honest-as-the-day-is-long jambo that gets panned.

I was Just about conned With The SHABBA STORY !!

Even as a hibs fan =
Both The Edinburgh Managers Coats are on a "Shoogly Peg" !!

Hibs & Hearts both go through a lot of Managers

seems to be normal nowadays to sack yer manager after one or two defeats !!!

Although most of us will have to admit - We BOTH expect that news sometime in the future ??

Are there any genuine Hearts fans on here who did not reallistically expect us to lose today?Does history not tell you that the team at the bottom of the league always get their first win against Hearts.I stated this last night but questioned whether Csaba had instilled more self belief into the players this season.Unfortunately this is not the case and until we have a stronger mentality then these results will continue to haunt us.

While you are there. Why did you pretend to be a girl?

Is this a football forum or a pantomime with the same sad numpties having a go at each other every day,I tend to read only however it is becoming very tiresome as the average mental age seems to be around twelve!

Long as I can remember Hearts have always had trouble with Falkirk.Remember a game at Tynecastle 30-40years ago, falkirk were up the park twice scored both times and won 2-0.We hit the bar,the post, had them disalowed.

It's one result in a long season and we are still above the fester road carbunkles in the league.
Bring on the derby.

MON THE JT'S

PS any of you hobo's know if the messiah will be fit for the derby.
