THE man who guided Glasgow Airport through last year's terror attack has been appointed the new boss at Edinburgh Airport.
Gordon Dewar, 41, will take up his managing director role in September after current boss David Johnston moved to a new job with airport operator BAA.

He is Edinburgh Airport's third managing director in 18 months, but Mr Dewar, who has been acting MD for the past month, said he was looking forward to shaping the airport's expansion plans.

Born and bred in the Capital, Mr Dewar today promised to build on the airport's successes in establishing itself as Scotland's number one airport.

Before joining BAA in February last year, Mr Dewar worked for transport consultancy group Halcrow and among the projects he worked on was creating the city's road traffic greenways.

He said: "It has been a privilege to lead the team at Glasgow Airport over the last 17 months, particularly in the immediate aftermath of last year's attack, when the dedication and professionalism of our staff ensured the airport was back in business within 24 hours.

"The attack underlined the importance of emergency planning and working with external agencies.

"The day itself was obviously a challenge but it is only in the following days that you appreciate the skills of your staff and the amount of work which was put in."

He said he was looking forward to the challenges at Edinburgh and insisted the airport was "crucial" to the Capital's future.

The previous managing director, Mr Johnston, was in the airport's hot seat for less than a year having taken over from Richard Jeffrey, who had been in the post for six years.

Mr Johnston was last month promoted to group procurement director for BAA and one of his first jobs will be to help sort the aftermath of the Heathrow terminal five debacle.

Edinburgh Airport is now Scotland's busiest, carrying more than nine million passengers a year.

The growth has been achieved thanks to expansion of direct international links from the Capital.

Colin Matthews, BAA's chief executive, said: "Gordon has been a key member of the BAA Scotland team over the past two years."

Mr Dewar will be alowed to spend and do what his English Masters at BAA say he has to do and what he has to spend...No more...No less. BAA Scotland [if there is one]? Has a long Haul Facility already in place some 40 odd miles away at Glasgow International, don't hold yer breath for such facilities at Edinburgh as they are probobly not required?

Planes are bad for the environment. People should travel overland in a fried-out VW combi van.

#3 - I suspect that what you say is true.

In which case, BAA should invest in a decent DIRECT train service from Edinburgh to Glasgow Airport, which should have baggage check-in facilities at Waverley (like Paddington does/did for the Heathrow Express).

The current Glasgow Airport rail link doesn't help anyone living East or North of Glasgow, as the transfer from Queen Street to Central won't be much fun (especially with 25 kg of bags and if your journey coincides with rush hour).

If BAA's plan is still for Glasgow to remain the main long haul airport for Scotland then, until you can get to the terminal in less than an hour from Edinburgh (the closer to 30 mins the better), it'll still be easier for many people in the Central Belt to fly from Edinburgh, even though that means going via London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt etc.

Mario, it's easy to keep those credit card "dollies" at bay. Just wet your pants before you go up the escalator. Works every time.

"Pleased to meet you. I'm Gordon Dewar, Chief of Terror Attack Airport."

#6 - more like he didn't want Glasgow. I mean, why push robin reliants when you could be pushing Ferraris? Edinburgh will give him the chance to shine, and good luck to him. I can imagine his career became utterly unsatisfying trying to promote an airport elsewhere in terminal decline.

Would the council be right to consider raising bus fares to finance a tram extension?
Yes, it’s worth stumping up for this step forward
No, many bus passengers will never use the tram
Only if trams have space for wheelchairs and prams
