A CAMPAIGN to save a city bus service will have been a waste of time if people do not use it, a councillor has warned.
Inverleith councillor Stuart Roy McIvor said while he was glad the number 13 bus service between Blackhall and Lochend – which attracts just 44 passengers per day – was not axed altogether, he did not want to see it come under threat again due to a lack of use.

Protesters fought a campaign which resulted in the service's off-peak hours only being cut, but the SNP councillor warned constituents at both ends of the city to make sure the service was used, or ultimately lose the argument.

"Those of you living around Blackhall and Craigleith in particular, I would urge to use the 13 bus," he said. "It will remain under threat as long as folk do not use it – and that stands to reason."

The half-hourly service currently costs the council £8.20 per traveller – nearly £95,000 per year.

Forget the bus - get a council tax rebate on this and take a taxi - it's cheaper!

#1 - I wouldn't trust the Lothian Buses figures on passengers at all. Same thing happened on another route and when independent people took the numbers they were in excess of 24 times the offical figures.

13 has always been a very unlucky number,be of with this bus now.

I use the 13 morning and evening, Monday to Friday, and just don't believe the official figures.

#2 If that were true, they would be making a massive profit on the route and so would not be under threat at all

The route terminates in the wrong place. If it terminated in Davidson's Mains or Cramond it would be more financially viable.

Hmm, bus company provide figures to council to decide whether subsidy warranted. The lower the figure, the more likely subsidy will be given.

However, if more people are paying customers, the bus co get subsidy AND fares.

Hmm.

"Protesters fought a campaign" - Absolutely rubbish. It was the Craigleith / Blackhall Community Council who conducted their own survey and presented it to the Council with considerable backing from Cllrs Lesley Hinds and Iain Whyte.

"The half-hourly service currently costs the council £8.20 per traveller – nearly £95,000 per year." How many times do people have to be told - this is utter bile. The Independent survey forced Lothian Buses officials into carrying out an urgent review of the service. Their findings, which were welcomed by the Craigleith / Blackhall Community Council, calculated that since the initial 13 weeks of the bus journey recommencing, passenger numbers on the Supported section of the route had increased from some 220 per week to approximately 500 per week based on recent statistics. As a result, the subsidy now runs at a greatly reduced figure of £3.64.

They forgot to say the study was done on a Sunday between 3am and 6am and the 44 people were the ones doing the survey.
