Lights failure causes city traffic chaos

COMMUTERS were delayed by up to an hour after traffic lights went out in the city centre.
It is understood tram contractors accidentally cut through a cable near Shandwick Place at around 3.30pm yesterday.

This switched off lights on Lothian Road, Charlotte Square and Shandwick Place during the evening rush hour.

At one point, there were traffic jams stretching from the West End to Murrayfield, and as far as Bruntsfield Links in the other direction.

Buses were still being delayed by as much as 45 minutes at 9pm last night.

And the problem was still not fixed this morning, with problems with the light sequencing causing further delays. The work to move utilities on Shandwick Place is due to finish by July 7.

But commuters have been warned of a fresh round of tram line disruption next month when work to divert utilities gets under way at Haymarket. The work is due to continue until February 2009.

While we have to put up with all the disruption surrounding the trams (that's the last mention of them) we now have another major city centre route - The Mound - being dug up and disrupting traffic whi quite probably has made its approach from a different direction to avoid the tram works....oops!

What was wrong with a policeman or traffic warden (or a quick thinking bus worker) taking up a point and directing traffic

In the old days a policeman (or two) would have taken control of the situation.

Sadly, policemen these days are more concerned with anything but doing their jobs.

A survey of communters said they never noticed any difference yesterday but did appreciate the cooncil providing a novel reason for the traffic jam.

It's about time that politicians started listening to traffic experts and allowed for free moving traffic by the use of one way streets, roundabouts (without traffic lights), grade separations and pedestrian subways. If the traffic moved better (faster) there would be less pollution, less frustration and less road rage, not to mention the savings in time, energy and fuel. They seem to forget that the buses run on the same roads as the cars. If the cars move faster, so will the buses.

I came through the West End on Friday at half four on a bus. There were polis on traffic duty, and frankly it wasn't much worse than usual. Ye just have to accept it, we live in a big toon. Read a paper or a book! Or just enjoy the view, it's priceless!

Thank Jehovah for the trams. All central traffic problems will be cured forever once the trams are on-line!
