Diversion work ads reveal scale of delays

TRAM chiefs are advertising for contractors to take on utility diversion works in Leith which should have been completed last year, it emerged today.
TIE is seeking construction firms to carry out 6,000 metres of utility diversion works within the Forth Ports estate. The move follows previous adverts looking for companies to tender bids to carry out utility diversions at Edinburgh Airport.

It is understood TIE is looking for a new construction company to take over from Carillion, which is employed elsewhere on the £512 million route.

Last month, it emerged some utility works were still only 70 per cent complete, with work between Newhaven and Leith Walk at 39 per cent.

Newspaper adverts reveal the utility works at the Forth Ports estate are not expected to be completed until October, contradicting claims made by TIE that the first phase of the tram project would be finished by the summer. TIE said the utility works in Leith were being advertised to allow Carillion to finish utility diversion work.

Presumably TIE is expecting the new contractors to do the work for free since Carillion have already been paid for it within the fixed price contract ?

One has to wonder why TIE were ever allowed control in the first place. Surely an organisation that know what they were doing should have been a consideration. After their performance in the planning of the quite ludicrous EARL Scheme they shouldn't be allowed near a model railway never mind a pointless tram scheme.

The "gogarburn tram stop" is not TIEs problem. The act says that RBS "shall fund the design procurement and construction of a tram stop within the vicinity of the Site[Gogarburn], if a tram stop is required."

Now as far As I know RBS are not exactly rolling in money to pay for this sort of thing at the moment. So insead of asking the SNP you ought to ask RBS if they are going to pay for "their" tramstop.

#Sadly they never knew about the severe risks (financially AND structurally) of attmempting to tunnel under Turnhouse. Thankkfully the SNP rescued the country from a potential disaster in every sense. Sadly those with their spotter heads on fail to see this.

At the start, Alfred McAlpine was appointed on a fixed price contract. Work was speedy and efficient.

However, now we're all subject to Carillion and their insane sub-contractors who dig, fill in, dig and fill in until the locals don't even know how to get out of their own streets.

I'd be glad to see Carillion penalised for their failure to deliver and a new contract put in place. So would a few thousand other residents near the roadworks.
