UNDER-FIRE education leader Marilyne MacLaren has survived attempts to force her to stand down – after being saved by Lord Provost George Grubb.
An attempt by Labour councillors to force a vote calling for her to go was ruled "incompetent" by the Lib Dem Lord Provost, but Councillor MacLaren still faces intense pressure over the coming weeks.

Today, she was due to be interviewed by the chief investigative officer from Scotland's ethical standards watchdog.

And council leader Jenny Dawe has admitted for the first time that Cllr MacLaren made a "mistake" when she both falsely accused parent Lynda Flex of leaking information on four proposed school closures to the Evening News, and subsequently banned her from an education forum.

An internal council investigation found the education leader broke the councillors' code of conduct, and if the Standards Commission comes to the same conclusion, Cllr MacLaren could face censure, suspension or a ban.

At yesterday's meeting of the full council, Labour tabled a motion calling for Cllr MacLaren to stand down until the findings of that investigation were known, because of the "damage to the reputation" of the council.

But Cllr Grubb refused to let it be heard, saying: "Since this is before the Standards Commission, I rule that it is inappropriate to discuss at the moment."

Speaking to the Evening News, Cllr Dawe said: "Marilyne has accepted the (internal report's] findings and she now clearly realises she made a mistake.

"She was wrong to say it was Lynda Flex who leaked the information, and she was wrong to remove her from the forum.

"She made two errors of judgement and she accepts that."

But Cllr Dawe said there was "circumstantial evidence" at the time that led to Cllr MacLaren's actions, and said she will support the education leader in any future vote of no confidence.

"As far as I'm concerned, she's doing her best," she said.

No councillors were allowed to speak on the matter at yesterday's meeting, but Cllr MacLaren had prepared a statement where she was expected to say: "I acted at the time of the leak in good faith and what I believed to be in the best interests of the school communities.

"While there appeared to be a body of evidence at the time pointing to Mrs Flex as the person who leaked the names of the four schools, I now accept that this is not the case – which is why an immediate apology was forthcoming.

"Since the forum was simply a sounding board for voicing opinion, and was not a fully constituted sub-committee of education, children and families, I believed I was within my powers to ask Mrs Flex to leave.

"I now accept that I was mistaken in this view."

Labour's education spokesman, Ricky Henderson, said: "That Cllr MacLaren acted improperly is beyond doubt, as the chief executive has confirmed.

"Given the ongoing damage that is being incurred to the council's reputation by this matter, we think it right for Cllr MacLaren to consider stepping aside from her post on a temporary basis until the findings of the Standards Commission are made known."

"which is why an immediate apology was forthcoming"

immediate ? I thought the original incident happended sometime in April.

Don't think an apology in October could be desribed as "immediate".

I presume that this farce is going to be a complete whitewash by this council and no-one will suffer from this apart from Lynda Flex who has went through this hell since April. We all know who we will vote for in the next elections!!!!

#2 Immeadiate after the facts had emerged (to the woman in question) and the report was out (in terms of letting everyone else know). You aren't allowed to say anything to the press while the issue is being investigated.

Not surprising, but a complete disgrace nonetheless.

You are allowed to apologise when you know you've done something wrong.

How long does that take ?

The arrogance of this woman to wait until the investigation was over before she apologised is unbelieveable. She has proved herself to an woman with no principles or morals and should NO WAY be involved with children. She'd be the kind of person that offers to buy a child a lolly and then say it's not good for you and take it off them.

#4 No, seriously, there is no sense in which the apology was immediate. It was refused, denied, ignored and then grudgingly apologised for once it had become clear there was no other possibility. MacLaren's conduct was dreadful, but sadly, in keeping with her past behaviour.

How can hyperbole be boundless? Bit of an exaggeration, no?

I'm sure the Council will be happy to keep Marilyne the Useless around as long as possible. After all, her very obvious failings detract attention away from the rest of them and make other Councillors look like shrewd operators in comparison.

Her best is clearly insufficient, there is only one set of interests on she has been acting on behalf of and that is her own. The Provost is only supporting her as he is equally incompetent in appointing her in the first place. Anyone with any dignity would have stepped down long before this but Cllr MacLaren is clearly too attached to the grubby council gravy train to show even a belated glimpse of honour. Her clinging to office stinks of desparation, she is truely pathetic.

#6 Couldn't agree more. Grubb is the biggest waste of space - quickly followed by Marilyne MacLaren. She should resign immediately, and Lynda Flex should take her place and Grubb should follow suit.

Since Labour did nothing at all for their 'traditional areas' all of which remain just as deprived and run down as ever before it amazes me that anyone actually has the brass neck to suggest they are a valid alternative.

This sounds like a silly mistake but if it is being investigated then the council are doing their job properly and this motion of no confidence was simple political grandstanding by a discredited and pointless party who in no way deserve any power as they are currently proving at national and UK level.

"Since this is before the Standards Commission, I rule that it is inappropriate to discuss at the moment."

If they find her at fault it will be a really sad day for the Standards Commission when for the first time they were forced to find a councillor at fault. The Whitewash Commission is a more apt name.

James 37, you beat me to it! "due to be interviewed by the chief investigative officer from Scotland's ethical standards watchdog" - nothing for Marilyne to worry about there, then. He couldn't detect a f@rt in a space-suit.
Here's the transcript in advance:-
CIO - Did you behave unethically?
Marilyne - No, of course not - One is a Cooncillor.
CIO - That's absolutely fine, then Ma'am. Sorry to have troubled you, please collect your expenses on the way out.

Thomas the Tank,

. . . mind you, since Marilyne's not a member of the Lie-Bore Party, there might just be an unprecedented finding against her!! But if this worst scenario does happen, she can at least be consoled with Jenny Dawg's ringing endorsement "As far as I'm concerned, she's doing her best"!! I wouldn't put these people in charge of a sinkfu o'dishes!

"...she's doing her best" - is that the gentle sound of a LibDem boot being whacked into a rival?

Anyways, when she goes - and it's only a matter of time, I suspect - could we have someone in charge of our schools who actually sends their kids to them, rather than to Mary Skinterse or wherever? They might actually be motivated to do a half-decent job then. Just a thought.

She may have been saved on this occasion by the use of procedure but the hounds smell blodd and she will go. If the LibDems have any sense at all, they'll cut her loose like a nag from the troika and let the pack sate their appetite.
This woman is an increasing liability, not only to the LibDems, but to politicians in general and, now that her closest allies in Planning, City Development, Education and particularly the Police have long since retired, is finding that she has neither the political aptitude nor the intellectual capacity for anything other than colouring in books and even then, I suspect she would merely eat the crayons!!
