PARENTS fighting school closure plans have hit out at their ward councillor, Steve Cardownie, for being uninterested in "one of the biggest local issues" in recent years.
Campaigners fighting to save Royston school claim that Cllr Cardownie – who is also deputy council leader – has made no effort to meet with them or listen to their views since the plans were announced in June.

They say he has snubbed their invitat
ion to community meetings on the issue, as well as not replying to phone calls and e-mails.

Cllr Cardownie also failed to turn up to a council-organised public consultation meeting into the closure of Royston last week, as well as a similar meeting for parents at Trinity Primary – the proposed receiving school for the closure-threatened Fort Primary, which is also in his ward.

Grant Cunningham, chair of Royston's parent council, said he has been repeatedly trying to meet with Cllr Cardownie since June, but has had no response.

Mr Cunningham said: "There was a period when I was phoning his office at least one a week and e-mailing him and I kept getting apologies from his secretary that he hadn't got back to me yet.

"There have been a lot of community meetings and he's never been to any of them. It's really disappointing, particularly given his position as deputy leader.

"I don't expect him to say he is 100 per cent on our side, but it would be nice to get our point over to him and have him listen.

"People here know who has been supporting us and who hasn't so I can't see how people are going to vote again for a local councillor who isn't interested in one of the biggest local issues in a long time."

He added: "I was particularly frustrated during the summer holidays to read about him in the paper talking about Festival street performers, bins and the Lady Boys of Bangkok but made no mention of the school and I find that disgusting."

But Cllr Cardownie insists his lack of contact with parents is not because he is uninterested but rather because he wants to gather all the facts from the consultation process before he takes a more informed view on all the closures.

He said: "I want to get all the information first so I can look at it all at one time. One of the biggest mistakes a politician can make is to state an opinion before they have all the facts.

"I played a pivotal role in keeping Fort open before because I felt that was the right thing to do. I take a great interest in education."

Steve doesn't like dealing with the "little people". The parents should be happy he hasn't verbally abused them and smacked them in the mouth.

Top bloke our Steve a real mans man, and he'll take on any wee lassie who says different.

When asked where the other £13m in cuts was going to be made, the council leaders at last night's meeting said 'they don't know'. So in order to make £14m in savings, they are hoping the closure of 4 schools at a saving of £1m will give them £1m to finance further meetings and consultations to decide where the other £13m is going to be found.
Oh. wait a minute... the savings are to be re-invested into schools said Marilyne Maclaren. So, they still need to find the £14m.

I tend to agree with the sentiments of (most of) the above.

#1 please provide a brief justification for your high opinion of our Dear Deputy Leader.

Ah, the wisdom of Cardownie: "One of the biggest mistakes a politician can make is to state an opinion before they have all the facts."
Indeed so. Another big mistake is threatening bar-staff but we won't drag that up. Btw I do believe #1 may intend to convey a touch of sarcasm. Just guessing.

#1 You really are a dumb ba$tard. This guy is a waste of time and completely inefficient to say nothing of being guilty of gross incompetence in his position. Just look at the many fiasco's this guy and his tragic council have mismanaged.

"I want to get all the information first so I can look at it all at one time."

Here's an idea. Perhaps talking to parents might help to, you know, gather information. Find out what people's concerns are, what they want their local councillor to do - that sort of thing. Just a thought.

Cardownie is more interested in importing Russian wifes
than any one in his constituency. He jumped ship once and he will do it again if he thinks it will benefit him.I have yet to meet anyone who admits to voting for him.Perhaps we have Afghani style elections in Edinburgh!

Mmm, not a lot of support for Cardownie in here. Cardownie the Invisble who doesn't have the time of day for his constituents. Which ward is he moving to since he won't be getting voted back in here ?

Don't worry Mr Cardownie, you where conspicious by your absence. I think this was a piece of political cowardice om your part "I was collecting information". Where from? Why could you not have spoken to the people you are meant to serve. We might have had some respect for you if you had at least have told the people the change is going to effect that you supported the change. As I have said all along, this whole thing is a faite accompli. Don't worry Mr Cardownie, we will remember.Enjoy your last term in office.
