EDINBURGH rugby chief executive Nic Cartwright has confirmed the team are to remain at Murrayfield next season.
"We had looked at all the options but nowhere else available was big enough," said Cartwright, adding: "We looked in particular at Meggetland but the last few crowds we have had have been bigger than the capacity there. Even the Cardiff game, where
we were relatively disappointed with the crowd, we sold more tickets for that one match than we had for the first three games of the season."

Based on official attendance figures Cartwright's sums do not quite add up. The first three games of the season saw Edinburgh aggregate 4121 whereas the Cardiff match produced an attendance figure of 2395.

Nevertheless, it is fair to say that after league turn-outs peaked around mid-season, two subsequent matches have seen improvements compared to early season.

Cartwright added: "We did a big survey of the supporters, asking them for their views and I'm glad to say that they were keen to stay, which fits in well with a decision that we had just about made anyway.

"It is not ideal being in a stadium that can hold almost 70,000 but we have done a lot of planning and will be doing a lot of promotion work to increase the crowd still further next season."

It was Gordon McKie, chief executive of the Edinburgh owners, Scottish Rugby, who floated the idea of a switch to the council-backed Meggetland.

The view now, though, is that Meggetland, where the capacity is around 3000 and might stretch to 4000 with temporary facilities, would be too small. "Once we get past 5000 or 6000 I'm sure we will get a good atmosphere at Murrayfield which will make it an even better place to come," said Cartwright. "If we can get a few crowds like we did against Glasgow, then people will want to keep coming back"

Edinburgh home crowds: 1389 (Ulster), 1326 (Ospreys), 1412 (Dragons), 1638 (Llanelli), 6225 (Glasgow), 4100 (Munster), 2506 (Connacht), 2395 (Cardiff).

Big Smoke if you were at the Glasgow, Leicester or Leinster games earlier this season you will know there is a good atmosphere with around 5000 in the stadium... go on give it a try!

Big smoke, granted playing in Murrayfield with only 3000 + like tonight is not great however to me if the quality of the game is good it doesnt matter where I am watching it. If Edinburgh cant find a pitch in Edinburgh thats in good enough condition with decent enough parking then so be it its Murrayfield again next season.

After watching tonights cracking game I dont really care where we watch them just as long as we win.

I was at the games, there is no atmosphere! Edinburgh may be playing well but when your stuck in a stand that far away from the action that is not entertainment for me.

Big smoke the challenge then is to find a stadium that meets HEC criteria in Edinburgh that can cope with 5 to 10K crowds, offer sponsors hospitality and doesnt cost an arm and leg to rent it. If we can find that great I would love a stadium like that but there isnt an obvious candidate.

Also atmosphere is not about the size of the ground. It helps, but its more about performance. Leinster fans turned up in numbers yesterday but were rarely heard because there team didnt play well / werent allowed to play. If your side is getting stuffed week in week out there will be no atmosphere whether we are playing at Murrayfield, Myreside, meggatland meadowbak, heriots or indeed Tynecastle or Easter Road. Peple make atmospheres and people only turn up if the team is winning (as Scotland will find out this Autumn if things dont improve.

#1 how much atmosphere do you want? Yes we could do with being closer to the action but having been to the match on Friday it was really good, the Leinster fans to our right made their presence felt although they were a little stunned when Contemponi missed the last second penalty kick, mind you as a Edinburgh fan we were stunned when it was awarded and then missed. After all this was Contemponi he never misses!

its not perfect but the best option at the moment, if all these ####ers who complained about there being no atmosphere actually came to the games they could make a difference. Frankly there have been better atmospheres at some Edinburgh games than there have been at internationals!!
