MORE than 1500 new hotel rooms are needed at Edinburgh Airport by 2013 to cope with the number of visitors coming to the Capital, planners have warned.
The number of people passing through Edinburgh Airport is expected to rise from around 8.9 million a year now to around 13 million in 2013, and 23 million by 2030.

To cope, an extra 550 rooms will be needed near the airport by 2010, a further 100
0 by 2013 and 2100 more by 2030, according to a report to go before the city's planning committee.

Almost two-thirds of the rooms needed are in three and four-star hotels. The planners also say more high-quality accommodation is needed in the Capital itself.

Peter Dornom, general manager of the Edinburgh Marriott Hotel in Glasgow Road and chairman of Edinburgh Principal Hotels Association, said: "It is important to promote the ongoing growth of the west side of the city, as we have the airport on this side.

"With the continuing expansion of Edinburgh Airport and opportunities for new business parks, I'm very supportive of these proposals, but it is important the developments meet national expectations as well as those of the city."

Graham Birse, deputy chief executive of Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said the need for new hotels reflected the city's growing international reputation for business.

He said: "The focus on 1000 new hotel beds for west Edinburgh is important in recognising the growing role and potential this area has for the city.

"As part of our current shortfall of 4000 beds city-wide, such an investment could only be welcome.

"The success of the airport, the West Edinburgh plan and the potential for two more world-class headquarters north of the A80 are building blocks in growing our international reputation and connectivity.

"None of this will happen without building infrastructure fitting for a European capital city."

Councillor Jim Lowrie, convener of the city's planning committee, said: "Edinburgh Airport is identified as a gateway to Edinburgh and Scotland.

"This report gives further evidence of Edinburgh's growing success and the need to manage that growth in a planned and structured way."

A spokeswoman for the airport said: "We consider the need for additional hotel provision, both on airport and offsite, to be a key requirement to provide our growing number of passengers with a range of quality and choice."

The report - which recommends that an area south of the southern boundary of Edinburgh Airport be used for high-quality development - will go before the city's planning committee on Thursday.

This article is an example of the biggest load of commissioned bull yer ever likely to read in NotNewsPaper. It’s unbeleivable tae think that these sorta articles come from a small circle o business lunches and a handful of punteres with no real concern about what the city needs - only how they can fill their pockets wi filthy lucre - ha ha ha - ye’d think the world would have cottoned on by now?

I would dispute that claim #2 - London, yes of course, but Edinburgh is already starting to build a more than half decent network of international flights, and in many respects is ahead of Glasgow & Newcastle (especially to some key European destinations).

You are correct and I now fly direct to far more destination from Edinburgh Airport than used to be the case when connections had to be made in (usually) London. From press reports I believe that Edinburgh Airport is Scotland's busiest and handling nearly 9 million passengers per annum.
Route and passenger growth brings employment, both on site and downstream and reflects a bright local economy much to the chagrin of one commentator here who labours under the fanciful notion that business and social services are all part of the same organisation. Just as well for us all that she is not in charge of anything other than her computer's keyboard. ;-)

Number 8
When I fist come to Scottish factory after Poland and Germany I am finding need to go to London for the changing planes. I now flying direct from Wroclaw and 2 German places. Makes flyings to Edinburgh factory to be fastest not wasting time for me.
When first start coming to factory I am staying in hotel. Edinburgh have many hotel but many only three stars which not suiting me. Better hotel often full so I have company house made to stay with Scottish secretary when visiting Scottish peoples at factory. Edinburgh need many more quality one hotel.

Why not build a nice big hotel near Kirkliston and give the people there a Lothian Bus link into Edinburgh?

||10!! Grumpy.

An acquaintance who is a senior official in Edinburgh's planning department recently told me that consent has been granted for an hotel on the site once occupied by Grampian Country Foods. Perhaps not Kirkliston but fairly close to it if my memory correctly serves me. My understanding, however, is that the hotel will be something similar to a Travel Lodge.
When entertaining prospective clients from Europe and the USA I often have to book hotel accommodation for them. I take Dr Atischu's point that there is a lack of quality hotel bed spaces in the city. This sometimes causes me difficulty as my clients most certainly do not 'do' Travel Lodges.

Edinburgh is the only Capital City in Europe not to have a train link from/to it's airport. This must be the reason we need more hotel rooms, it's just the amount of people coming into the airport - but not being able to get away from the place.

23 million by 2030 I doubt very much! By then there won't be such a thing as affordable air travel without an affordable supply of oil. For those who don't know already, global oil output is forecast to peak circa 2010 and then fall relentlessly at about 5% a year until supplies are exhausted. You can talk up growth as much as you like, but you need an energy supply to sustain it and Scotland sold all her oil to the Americans!

#15, you don't need to go very far to find a counter-example. Dublin does not have a rail link to the airport. Still, a nice fast rail link going through to Glasgow would be a step forwards to a competitive market.

Baa is financing Glasgow Airport Train link.It just gets worse for Edinburgh,The tram line is 2nd best ,It wont be able to handle it,We have shot ousselves in foot with tram,And should have listened to SNP,Now international financial companies are avoiding Edinburgh because theres too much red tape ,Glasgow has and always will lead the way and we would do well to follow,Well done Glasgow for your positive thinking and expansion to your Subway system ,Every big city with ambition should have one.
