Council leader says extra cash needed for £37m Commie Pool revamp

CITY council chiefs are to ask the Scottish Government for millions of pounds in extra cash to help revamp the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
The £37 million project, which has to be completed in time to host the diving competitions at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, is facing a major funding shortfall.

Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell announced an additional £1m grant last week as part of
the 2014 "legacy" programme.

Council leader Jenny Dawe said the extra money was "very welcome", but she added: "It would have been even more welcome if he had made it £10m."

At the same time as refurbishing the pool, the council is planning another major sports redevelopment – demolishing Meadowbank Stadium and building a smaller sports centre on the site.

Cllr Dawe said: "We have put aside enough to get on with things, but it will be extremely difficult to do them both.

"The chances are we will be going back to the Scottish Government and seeing if we can negotiate some more help."

She said one of the problems with the Commonwealth Pool was the constraints imposed on possible redevelopment because it was a listed building.

"The building cannot be extended in any way, so the swimming lanes will never be of Olympic standard," she said.

Cllr Dawe added that the council had considered disposing of the pool and building a replacement.

"If you started with a piece of land and built a brand new facility which was totally up to international standards, that could be done for less than it will cost us to refurbish the pool," she said.

"Someone might have taken it over and used it as a pool, though not to the same standards. There was an approach, but the listing was an insuperable problem."

She said de-listing the building would have given more options for redevelopment. "I believe officials did make tentative approaches but we were told 'no way'."

The £25m redevelopment plan for Meadowbank, funded partly from the sale of part of the site, will include a 5000-seater stadium, a new running track and an indoor sports complex.

To secure Government funding, the council must make sure the new centre meets the criteria laid down for "national and regional sports facilities".

Cllr Dawe said: "If we were not able to raise enough money, we might have difficulty making it a truly national facility."

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: "We have offered to meet the council to discuss its available funding."

If its easier to build from scratch than to renovate, why not demolish Meadowbank and Commie pool and build a new pool at Meadowbank and a new Stadium on Dalkieth Road?

Or, charge the regualr patrons the going price for entrance, instead of subsidising a minority sport for the rift raft!

Currently UK (including Scots) taxpayers are subsidising the London Olympics to the tune of 6 billion pounds( total budget just over 9 billion pounds) - virtually none of which will be spent outside of London, and certainly not in Scotland.

Just to put that figure in perspective, the total Scottish Government budget for 2008-2009 is 33 billion. So a total of just under on fifth of the annual Scottish Government budget is being spent on the London Olympics, meanwhile we in Scotland cannot even get a few million to do a renovation to our premier olympic sized swimming facility.

And the English subsidise Scotland?? I thinketh not.

One way to recoup some costs would be to fill the pool with fruit juice*. You could swim and drink at the same time and extra charges would be made for any juice consumed. I should imagine the extra 37m quid would be generated within weeks of my suggestion being implemented.

* I was going to suggest beer but that would be silly and irresponsible.

This council are rubbish. If it was the old Labour council they would have gotten round it. Senior councillors would have their hangers-on round the commie with cans of petrol and boxes of matches and get over the listing 'problem'.

They would then find one of their developer buddies to build a nice new one with their back pockets bulging.

4. Once more - The Olympics, like almost all those before it, is expected to break even and perhaps even make a profit.

All govt grants to the Olympics will be repaid back to the Treasury.

But don't let that stop you having a good moan about it.

God bless the SNP for winning the Commonwealth Games for Glasgow...(also known as 'taking the credit for something they never contributed to'.)

You still here?

After openly admitting yourself that you post under various names (although not intentionally admitting lol)...

And still no explanation as to why or how the offending post was removed *completely* from the website - not modded, but completely removed.

Crawl back into your hole and come out when you are prepared to post here as yourself and only yourself, otherwise any and every comment you make is worth the usm total of nothing.

First thing to do in the revamp is get some heating sorted for the changing rooms - getting changed there is akin to stripping naked in the Arctic circle in a force ten gale, except marginally colder.

Forget your speedos, all you need is a walnut shell and elastic band by the time yo are ready to warm yourself up in the pool.

Blimey, she just gets worse and worse.

"We have put aside enough to get on with things, but it will be extremely difficult to do them both. The chances are we will be going back to the Scottish Government and seeing if we can negotiate some more help."

What?? Either you have the budget or you don't. You told us two months ago that you did. What the hell is going on in this administration? Utter, utter incompetence from the top down.

Will they keep the wee windae under the water at the deep end? I just love dooking under and looking in at the dusty boiler room.

I'm sure the life guards also like perving, sorry peering through the windae form the other side too,

Care to explain how? What are visitor numbers expected to be? How much are the tv rights? You don't have a clue do you?

They should raise the cash from tickets and sponsored swimming, not from taxpayers. We're not made of money.

#5 mig: Great idea but why stop there? The leftover pulp from the fruit could be made into healthy muffins and sold for, say, 99p for six thus generating even more revenue and solving the waste problem in one.
It's a lack of imaginative ideas like these that hold our capital city back.

£5000 would be more than enough to update and repair the Toilets at Tollcross School, where because of the state of them, our Children were frightened to use!

The Olympics have just gone overbudget by an estimate of 4 times. And they have barely started yet.
Again this government accepted an unrealistic bid probably secured with little brown envelopes.
So how can anybody say they will come out even when they dont know the final cost???
What kind of pr*ck comes on here everyday and peddles obvious party political lies??

Why doesn't Dawe put her efforts behind doing one thing properly. Projects would go much better if they didn't attempt to be so contentious. They claim consultation, but it is done in such a biased manner that it isn't respected.

AaronL,

two suggestions:

1) Nobody wants the council to knock down Meadowbank - not even the council, only the officials and developers. Save yourself some money and concentrate on the Pool.

2) But why this obsession with the Pool anyway. Who is asking for an Olympic standard pool? Glasgow don't need it as they are hosting swimming events. If Edinburgh host any events they will be for diving only. The Pool is already large enough for local and international use (it is already Olympic in size). So why the obsession?

I believe it has something to do with undermining the listed status so the council can completely remove the facility and build a piddly little one in its place, just as they are doing at Meadowbank.
