EDINBURGH City Council has spent more than any other local authority on external consultants, it was reported today.
Figures released under Freedom of Information show Edinburgh spent £8.2 million on advisors in 2006/07. North Lanarkshire was said to be the second-biggest spender at £7.1m.

In total, Scotland's councils spent a record £67 million, a rise of 30 per cent on the previous year.

Edinburgh City Council finance convener Gordon Mackenzie reportedly said: We've had a number of large capital projects that have come on-stream and we've had to get in consultants for that.

"In addition I would argue that getting consultants in on the short term can actually save you money in the longer term."

Incredible !

On top of bloated staff numbers they need to employ even more people 'off' the books - doubtless lots of them will be pals of labour/lib dem councillors !

Get Sir Alan Sugar or Don Trump into one of these councils and you'd be amazed at how much council tax could be cut!

(OK you might have one or two golf courses extra but don't kid yourself that our current lot are whiter than white!?)

"consultants" and "experts' are over-rated and certainly over-paid.

Nice work if you can get it.

And how many of the "consultants" are former senior managers who retired on a big package and are now back bringing their vast knowledge and experience to help their ex colleagues on the council and to pay for their next round the world cruise?

I believe the latest council employs experts "off the books" to unravle the mess left by the last incumbants. Also its fair to say that they only employ them for the period required.
I dont vote SNP by the way

Should the council be spending £112,000 on repairing historic furniture?
Yes, £112,000 isn’t a lot of money to preserve our heritage
No, there are better ways to spend the money
