IT IS a dubious claim to fame which Edinburgh's Labour leader will be keen to live down.
But Councillor Andrew Burns has become the first politician in modern times to be thrown out of the City Chambers after accusing city leader Jenny Dawe of being "less than truthful".

Stunned veteran councillors said they had not seen anything like it in 40 years after Cllr Burns was ejected at Lord Provost George Grubb's insistence.

The Labour leader was thrown out after refusing repeated requests to withdraw his comments.

The remark came during a stormy debate about claims that Councillor Gordon Mackenzie had illegally chaired a meeting of council development firm EDI after he had resigned from the role.

A motion to suspend him for the rest of the meeting for "obstructive and offensive" behaviour was tied at 29-29, leaving the Lord Provost to use his casting vote.

Cllr Burns then left yesterday's meeting without protest, to applause from the Labour benches. Cllr Dawe took exception when Cllr Burns challenged her insistence that Cllr Mackenzie had not tendered his resignation to the EDI board. "I am not lying and I ask you to retract that statement," she said.

But Cllr Burns insisted: "I said the council leader was being less than truthful. I stick by that."

He said that official council papers from June 9 stated that Cllr Mackenzie would leave the board with effect from June 23.

The Evening News has seen an e-mail from Cllr Mackenzie's PA to the secretary of EDI asking for Cllr Mackenzie's resignation to be postponed on June 12. It said: "Would you please ensure that Councillor Mackenzie's resignation from the EDI Board is postponed. Councillor Mackenzie intends to resign this year and will confirm the date in due course. This notification supercedes any other correspondence on the matter."

After the meeting, Cllr Burns remained defiant, saying: "There is simply no question that I used the word 'lie' or 'liar' in my comments to the council Leader.

"The council leader had said, in response to an earlier question, that there was no written/signed letter relating to Councillor Gordon Mackenzie's resignation from the board of EDI. There is such a signed document – I have it in my possession – and I responded to the council leader that she was being less than truthful in her response. I stand by that."

Former Lord Provost Eric Milligan supported him, saying: "I have never seen anything like this in all my years at the City Chambers.

"For this to happen in the capital city of Scotland is a disgrace and George Grubb ought to be ashamed of himself for using his casting vote to push this through."

But Cllr Mackenzie said: "We ended up in a situation where we had to suspend Cllr Burns. He was given opportunity to change his wording but he didn't and that is unfortunate."

is this another scam from politicians? over the past few weeks we have seen the depths to which they will go to screw the electorate, now its handbags at dawn in edinburgh! if cllr burns has the above document then why was'nt it presented at that meeting? also if our council leader jenny dawe has in fact misled the council for what ever reason then she should not only resign but hang her head in shame!
this is once again a situation showing us that politicians cannot be trusted in any way shape or form, they promise you the earth when they are trying to be elected, once secure they are only out for themselves without regard to the people they represent, as in national and scottish government.

Its all a big mistake - Andrew Burns would not have used the word 'truthful' because he would clearly have no idea what it meant.

Burns should have been thrown out of office a long time ago for being "less than competent".

He's right about Jenny though...big Tramline-building, school-closing supremo speak with forked tongue.

if he's found to be right, can Dawe be thrown out, preferably by defenestration?

Is the complement refenestration?

I was wondering if the word "refenestration" exists. If so, then the procedure to restart Microsoft Windows could be succinctly written as...

How to Stop and Restart Microsoft Windows
1. Defenestrate Windows
2. Refenestrate Windows
ermmm still in the dark?

#8 I've seen plenty roadworks as well and the roads have improved. Take a walk up to the Gillespie crossroads and see how much the road has been improved from there to Balerno. What do you suggest? Not repairing the roads?
Most of the roadworks in the city centre have been caused by the trams project which your beloved Labour party pushed through with the backing of your Tory allies and the Lib/Dems.

I don't think you're in any position to make fun of, or criticise anybody else regarding their use of English.

#8 You are entitled to your opinion, but do you have to be so offensive? Calling people idiots because you disagree with them says more about you than it does them.

There have been plenty of people challenging the LibDems and the SNP - is it not a bit childish stating that 'anyone who challenges them' gets thrown out? Only 1 person has, and this was for (in his own way) calling someone a liar - which may or may not be right, but Burns knows full well the way to tackle the issue, he's been in politics long enough.
14

Megan H,

26/06/2009 12:50:21
#12 now you are being less than truthful. Gorgie Road has been in that state for years before the present council took over. As to the tram project you also know that it was the will of parliament and council that the trams continue against the advice of the SNP. Are you ashamed to accept responsibility?
I also await the next election. On the evidence of the Euro elections Labour will be wiped out with large gains for the SNP. Even Darling would lose his seat to the SNP.

"A motion to suspend him for the rest of the meeting for "obstructive and offensive" behaviour was tied at 29-29, leaving the Lord Provost to use his casting vote."
It strikes me that Cllr Grubb has misused his position within the Chambers, in a tied vote the Chairmans casting vote should be cast as "status quo ante", i.e. against the proposed motion. It would appear that the traditional rules do not apply to the Lib Dumbs.

The First Defenestration of Prague involved the killing of seven members of the city council by a crowd of radical Czech Hussites on July 30, 1419

The Second Defenestration of Prague was central to the start of the Thirty Years' War in 1618.

This is astonishing not because a politician lied, nor because another refused to back down, but because George Grubb, already established as one of the worst Lords Provost this city has ever had, used his casting vote completely inappropriately. He is obliged by convention to maintain the status quo in any such vote. The status quo would have been for Andrew Burns to remain in the meeting. What on earth is Grubb playing at?
29

Bill MacD,

1-gordon... Of course politicans cannot be trusted. The very idea that we should expect to trust politicians and expect them to behave better than the rest of us is nonsense. What we need is a political system that doesn't depend on trust. We need fair votes, transparency, freedom of information, and mechanisms to undermine the power of parties. Then, and only then, will we have a political system that responds to the people.

Unfortunately both main political parties prefer to alternate total power, and so cynically deny us any real changes. The Lib Dems and Greens are at least slightly better, but can't do much about it under the abusive system. Anyone who still votes either Labour or Conservative should be ashamed of themselves, until one of these parties commits to genuine change.

did they go down the dustpipe with the council,or did they go down down with the council? maybe they have caroline waiting with marghareta times for the matchstick men, or are they trying to get evryone to join the army now?

#18. I know it is hard for the SNP supporters like yourself to accept it, but hiding behind the 'will of the parliament' is cowardice. The SNP Executive rubber stamped the trams when they could have stopped them.

Since then, there have been many reasons why the project should have been stopped and monies diverted elsewhere (school closures etc) and SNP happy to sit and keep the project going.

i don't know at what point council and national politics were deemed "clean"... this sort of behaviour and thing like cash-for-peerages hasd been going on for LONG before the treaty of 1707.. where scottish autyhoritarians were promised land and terms of office in the new united parliament if they voted in favour of a union. Not a thing has changed. Why not start up a "wevolewtion" as Rik from the Young Ones would say, and overthrow the state. Least then we might get a decent bus service to Bathgate.

Pity it too so long. If he had been thrown out 10 years ago perhaps the council wouldn't have wasted so much money on a congestion charge and closing aal those roads in the city. Burns should be held personally accountable for all the money he's wasted.

#1 He obviously DOES have the document, and has clearly even shown it to the Press, never mind producing it in the Chamber - see yesterday's story:

#43 gordon is really Gordon then eh? get a life numpty heed! i think the standard of intellegence is a wee bit higher than yours obviously, i know when and where to use a capital letter but its a natural trait that either on a computer or by txt capitals are dispensed with. (me thinks he's really dopey in the 7 Dwarfs) lol.
#55, i stand corrected but why make the comment and have the facts but the outcome was still the same, ie he was thrown out anyway! this is more than double standards! who do we believe? is the administration really in control or are they led by greed and self gratification? if the resignation in question was resinded then where is the actual proof of that, if it is true what the leader of the council ststed then why was'nt there proof? that would nullify the copy of the letter that cllr burns has. total numpties, they could'nt run a p** up in a brewery.

Not a straw to choose between the three of them.
Burns - tried and found guilty of incompetence years ago.
Dawe - you only have to be in her company and lisyen to her for a few minutes to realise she is really a pseudo politician.
Grubb - completely out of his depth as Lord Provost .

Why are people like these three allowed to masquarade under a " working for the people of Edinburgh" banner ?
Self gratification comes to mind !!
