800 years of Scots military history marches into view
AN exhibition on more than 800 years of Scottish military history is to go on display at an Edinburgh museum next month.
The show at the National War Museum at Edinburgh Castle will feature clothes, weapons and tactics from some of Scotland's most famous battlefields.
The exhibition, Call to Arms, will also highlight four different Scottish fighting men – including a 15th-century Galloglaigh – a roving mercenary – and a 19th-century Scottish soldier employed by the British Army. A 17th-century Highland warrior fighting clan and a modern-day Army soldier will also feature, along with a Claymore broadsword and a cluster of 19th-century grapeshot for a cannon.
Jonathan Ferguson, assistant curator at the National War Museum, said: " Scotland has always had a fearsome reputation on the battlefield and while technology has unquestionably changed the way warfare has been conducted over the centuries, one thing remains constant – the importance of infantry in any conflict."
The exhibition will run from May 23 until February 1, 2009.
