FIRST Minister Alex Salmond has led a meeting of the British-Irish Council at Hopetoun House in South Queensferry.
The First Minister welcomed representatives from all eight British-Irish Council administrations – Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and the UK Government.

The main items for discussion were demography and energy.

The summit discussed energy and the need to ensure energy supplies, including the opportunities in renewable energy resources such as harvesting the offshore energy between the coasts of Scotland and Ireland via a sub-sea grid.

The council also took the opportunity to consider the current economic climate.

Ministers expressed concern about the impact of the global financial crisis on the real economy.

Also attending the meeting were Northern Ireland's First and Deputy First Ministers, Martin McGuiness and Peter Robinson.

So whilst Gordon Brown was helping resolve the world economic crisis with George Bush, Salmond was mixing it with the political heavyweights of the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.

Sounds like a productive meeting mind you, they managed to express concern about the impact of the global financial crisis on the real economy.

I trust they had a nice lunch at the tax payers expense.

Salmond looking good in his role as Statesman and Scotland (and her people) getting another wee taste of what Independence could be like.

In short, another wee confidence booster, the type unionists like Mr Rufus absolutely hate because they know lack of confidence is the only thing which has kept Scotland tied to the union.

It's coming RTF, learn to live with it, learn to love it.

Hey Brian, that meeting sounded like a complete waste of tax payers money. I would dearly love to see how much it cost as well as what was achieved.

Rufus,

So whilst Gordon Brown was taking his wife on a shopping trip to the USA, alex salmond was busy focussing on problems which affect Scotland, and the scots.

Make no mistake, things have not gone to plan for Gordon, he was in Washington so he could be seen standing along with Bush, McCain and Obama, when the 'bail out' for banks was agreed on Friday. Great picture. Except, the bail out didn't happen.

Gordon missed the photocall. Never mind. Will he fly out there again next week, so he can get in the picture??

All designed to make Brown 'look' like the big international leader, helping those yanks sort out the 'global financial problem'. What a waste of taxpayers money.

I'm sure hopetoun house was much cheaper, and a helluva lot more productive.

Rufus thinks George Bush knows more about energy finance and economics than political and professional representatives from the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. Isnt LSD so yesterday?

3.

He doesnt think a meeting between 2lame duck national leaders on their way out as a waste of time.
No fear of humiliation you have to admire that in a way.

This type of glad handing by Salmond is sheer hypocrisy. This is the man who claims Scotland should be INDEPENDENT ,yet the very fact he seeks these alliances shows that his version of so-called independence is nothing short of a charade. Other sensible political commentators know Scotland is best served by a union of its nearest neighbours and for the past 300 years we have had such a stable structure called the United Kingdom. Salmond plays the game and unfortunately there are too may gNATS who cant't spot the clues. After the rhetoric dies down the fact remains - we are better served standing united rather than divided and Salmond knows that deep down- just wake up and smell the coffee!

Demography : It would be nice to be a fly in the wall listening to that. How many more immigrants do they they need to sway the vote in their favour (as they are currently doing, see Islamic vote, appeasement , swamping etc ).

The survey puts the Conservatives on 41%, down three points from last month. Labour is up three on 32% with the Liberal Democrats on 18%.

The poll - the first to be carried out after the end of the Labour conference and the resignation of Ruth Kelly - suggests that voters may be returning to Labour amid fears of a worldwide economic crash, and will underline fears in the Tory party that it has yet to "seal the deal" with the electorate. Based on the poll, the Conservatives would struggle to win an overall majority at an immediate general election.

With polls now suggesting a narrowing of the gap between the two main parties,

Brown and Bush. Two of the most powerful leaders in the world, sorting out the current economic crisis whilst Salmond finds his true level with the big power brokers from the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.

I am suprised Salmond has time for these high powered meetings.

He should be preparing his presentation for the Lloyds Tsb board. Well maybe not the board. They will no doubt be too busy to attend and will send along a couple of office juniors to pay the usual lip service.

#Rufus

Are you an idiot.

Why would you be against Salmond meeting the leaders of Wales and NI to discuss the financial crisis and way they can help each other.

As we have seen from previous meetings like this it tends to allow Wales, NI and Scotland provide a joint position to prevent London government from walking over us for their benefit.

Labour has a relativley good conference, nobody stabs anyone in the back,Gordon manages a half decent speach and the number of people willing to vote for them goes up only 3% from one of their lowest ratings ever and they think they are ok again deary me
