HOPES have been raised that two stretches of disused train track put up for sale have now been secured for the future development of Edinburgh's rail network.
A section of disused railway land at Abbeyhill and a former brewery railway siding at Haymarket Station were put on the market by the property arm of the now defunct British Rail last year, sparking fears that developers would snap up the land.

But today it emerged that publicly-owned track operator Network Rail was interested in buying the land with the support of Transport Scotland.

Patrick Hutton, secretary of the Capital Rail Action Group (CRAG), said: "This is great news and I do hope the sale is completed because it is vital that we protect key transport assets like this.

"The Haymarket land needs to be secured for future options of increasing capacity at the station. But the Abbeyhill land is also essential for future provision for any reopening of the South Sub but also the reopening of the Borders Waverley route."

PS Just why should Network Rail have to 'buy' the land already owned/inherited by/from the BR Property Board?

#2 - a very valid point. If this land (belonging to the taxpayer) was 'sold' by a now-defunct nationalised industry - who would get the proceeds? - and why does it have to be 'bought' by another organisation also owned by the taxpayer? Or is it yet another merry-go-round scam by a crooked cartel of developers, property agents and lawyers?

#3 - with a bit of luck, the vibrations from the trains will weaken the foundations and one of Edinburgh's more horrendous architectural aberrations (and that is saying something) will crumble into rubble.
But Edinburgh badly needs better public transport. Reopening some of these abandoned rail lines (especially where they're still unbroken and re-usable without demolitions and major engineering works) makes sense. Restore at least a third track through Calton tunnels, and the Abbeyhill loop, and we'd have lots of extra capacity for the Borders Railway (announcement tomorrow) and the South Sub and even extra services to East Lothian. The Haymarket Brewery sidings could be used for terminating the Shotts services - they'll have taken so long getting there that a wee walk won't matter....
