THE dirtiest streets in Edinburgh are getting worse despite an overall improvement in the city, a report has revealed.
Roads and pavements in the Leith area were found to have become even filthier than they were last year, when they also came last in a cleanliness survey of the Capital.

The Leith ward scored 61 points out of 100 on a cleanliness scoring system, o
ne point lower than last year.

The neighbouring Leith Walk ward also scored poorly, although it had improved.

But the score for Edinburgh as a whole was 72, up by four points and the highest the city has scored.

Cleanliness studies are carried out by Keep Scotland Beautiful for the city council.

Leith councillor Gordon Munro said the fact that Edinburgh's overall score was its highest yet showed that his ward was being neglected.

He said: "Every time these tables come out we say things have to change in Leith but the score is getting worse.

"The litter run between Leith Walk and Leith Academy, with Greggs bags and chip wrappers, is terrible and the level of dog fouling is also contributing to this situation.

"It works both ways. We need more from the council in keeping the streets clean, but we also need to go into schools and educate, as well as crack down on irresponsible dog owners.

"People should be proud of Leith and keep the place looking nice. The fact the score has gone up in other areas of the city shows more has to be done in Leith itself."

But the council's director of services for communities, Mark Turley, told councillors in a report that a range of measures were starting to make an impact in Edinburgh as a whole. He said: "These scores have improved through a number of measures, including increased flexibility in meeting demands and working collectively to maximise the effect of limited resources.

"Improving street cleansing is still the top priority for improving the quality of life for residents in the city centre and second priority in all but one other neighbourhood.

"Recent street-cleansing surveys show that the city is cleaner than it has ever been although some wards have still to reach an acceptable standard."

He added that street sweepers had started working an hour earlier on Leith Walk in a bid to ease the problem.

Alastair Tibbitt, chairman of Greener Leith, said: "I wouldn't blame the street cleansers themselves because they do a terrific job.

"I would want to see more fines being dished out and more wardens."

You do have a lot of ignorant people that don't think rubbish should go in bins in Leith but the problem is made worse by the fact that the council has never invested in the pavements and roads in the area - so the general feeling is of a run down area.

There is no colour or plants/ flowers to try and brighten up the place around the foot of Easter Road.

Too many people seem to think its fine to simply throw away their rubbish, or let their dogs sh1t wherever they like without picking up the mess. They should be handing out a few hefty fines to concentrate people's minds. yes, Leith and the streets off the walk are a mess. The Council do their best but it's the residents who dump and who should pay the price. Have some pride people!

Should Edinburgh not just declare UDI from Leith?
It's time.

This yet again proves that all that wind about people being proud to be from Leith is just that "wind".

On this occasion I don't blame the Council. In fact it's quite simple I blame the people who are dropping it or letting their dog drop it.

I from Edinburgh and work here but don't live here anymore. Edinburgh has turned into one big dump. It's not only Leith Princess Street, South Side I could go on. Thank God I don't live here anymore.

I'm from Leith. And I'm proud of it. I don't drop litter and I have to run an obstacle course to get to the end of my street for all the dog sh*te. The reason dog owners take no responsibility for this is because as far as I know they never get punished. Come on EEN, how about some INVESTIGATIVE journalism for once. Tell us how many people have been fined for not cleaning up after their dogs in Leith. I bet the number is really low. How does it compare to the rest of the city? C'mon Adam Morris, write a story with a point.

Darty , why dont you invest in Binoculars and a mobile phone, and maybe a megaphone.

Alternatively dont spend money on this stuff and move out.

Leith makes me depressed. Whenever I go there i just feel sad.

Gosh Mario, maybe YOU need the binoculars as you are obviously very short sighted.

14 Alex - people were happy and going about their business

Yes Alex, police officers generally are "happy and going about their business" when charging the suspect. ;-)

"People were going about their business" . Ive seen this too , normally going about their "business" whilst slumped in shop doorways with their trousers still on.

Junkies , Sex money Ladies and Drunks. Thats Leith in a nutshell.

#17 - Know your history, we......

I do know my history and the result of the referendum. And therein lies the great mystery of why Edinburgh was lumbered with Leith.
Leithers claim that the world's daftest game, in which a man or woman squanders a good part of the day in whacking a small ball with a stick was first played there. There can surely be no defence against such stupidity.
By 'we' do you mean you were alive at the time of the unofficial referendum? If so it is surely time to get your teeth into the tumbler and get away to your bed.

Leith is rubbish, has always been rubbish and will continue to be rubbish until the end of time. What a pointless story, talk about stating the obvious. Whats the next story going to be? 'Sun rises in morning, moon comes up at night!' Even a blind man knows Leith is the ar***ole of Scotland/Britain/Europe/World/Universe....etc etc.

Try as I may I have never discovered the point of Leith. Many of my business associates share my view.
Passing through the old boundary northbound in Leith Walk is akin to entering a twilight zone.
Many of the locals I observe in Leith strongly suggests that a degree if in-breeding is still endemic.

Kirsty Boyd-Williamson,

So does my husband.

Only me. The training regime I subjected him to on our betrothal has been remarkably effective to the point that he bears many characteristic similarities to a doe-eyed puppy.
