Joiner blames economy for ignoring ban

A SELF-EMPLOYED joiner has blamed the faltering economy after he was caught behind the wheel while suspended from driving.
Richard McGee, 26, who runs his own joinery firm, was stopped by police while driving a van he used for work. It turned out he was already serving a suspension and had no insurance.
He was caught on Niddrie Mains Road in Edinburgh on June 9, when police checked his car.
McGee said he had hired an employee to drive him to and from jobs after being suspended from driving.
But the father-of-two claimed that business had got so bad during the latest financial slowdown that he had to let the driver go.
When friends who he relied on to ferry him about were too busy, he drove himself.
Yesterday, at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, he was fined £430 and disqualified for a year after admitting driving without a licence and insurance.
His solicitor, Donna Cooper, told the court that McGee usually made around £600 per week from his business.
She added: "The business has not been going well and he had to let the person he employed to drive him around go."
