LYING virtually naked with bloodied wooden daggers pinned to your back wouldn't be the first choice of activity for most tourists visiting sunny Spain.
But brave Joanne Simm will be enduring the pain and embarrassment when she visits Pamplona to campaign against the "barbaric" sport of bullfighting.

The 24-year-old from Holyrood Road is campaigning against the way animals are treated during the San Fermin Festival, and tomorrow will charge into the city with 100 other activists to bare her skin.

The annual Running of the Bulls takes place on Tuesday and will see several of the creatures chasing members of the public through the streets of the city before being battled in the bullring.

Joanne said: "I'll do anything I can to help stop this barbaric and mindless 'game'. If it means lying bloodied in some nipple tassles and a pair of underwear, so be it."

Joanne, an Open University environmental student, said she was hoping her stand would encourage Pamplona to follow other Spanish cities and take an anti-bullfighting stance.

She said: "Contrary to popular belief many places in the country, such as Barcelona and Torello, don't support the horrific activity. It is mainly tourists who keep the trade going, so we are calling on visitors to boycott this."

More than 100 people will travel to Spain for the event, including people from Germany, America, Australia and the Ukraine.

Joanne, who works part-time as a campaigner for Advocates for Animals, is the only Scottish representative of charity PETA attending the protest.

She said: "We want to shock people into thinking with this stand. We'll simulate how a bull looks when it is tormented and tortured in the ring by wearing bloody banderillas on our backs.

"It really is disgusting how the bulls are treated. Electric prods are often used to rile and disorientate the animals. Jelly is rubbed into their eyes to blind them and they are often sedated with tranquilisers. It is not a fair fight."

Tomorrow's protest is not Joanne's first in the name of bulls. Four years ago she travelled to Spain with PETA to campaign against bullfighting by running nude down the street with spears in her back.

She said: "Unfortunately we need to go back and drum in the message. It was very inspiring to hear the Spanish cheer us on.

"A survey conducted by Gallup a couple of years ago showed that 72 per cent of Spaniards had no interest in bullfighting, compared to 54 per cent in the 1980s."

Joanne, a vegan who never wears animal materials, is a regular on the campaign scene.

In the past she has taken part in anti-seal shooting and anti-hunting demonstrations.

She said: "Tormenting and butchering animals for entertainment is straight out of the Dark Ages."

There is nothing barbaric in bullfighting, the bulls that run in the streets dont appear in the ring, some people do anything to take their kit of.

Are you serious? Of course bull fighting is barbaric. Any 'sport' which results in the injury or death of an animal is a sport for little men who want to feel big and powerful for the first time in their little life.

And Joanne looks like a right little minx, i'll be keeeping an eye out for her returning!

The let this girl go out with he ambulance/paramedics in the Lothians should she wish to counter barbarism; save her the fare and b/b in Pamplona.
Bull fighting in Spain ceased to be a major activity for Spaniards many years ago; it is mainly a tourist attraction.
See football for Spains principle "sporting" activity.
As for being a vega, then I hope that she has sound medical advice concerning aspects of her future health

#1 as usual is as wet as a p. The usual sex orientated eedjits are also posting their comments. She is doing something and not b4 time the world be aware of the barbarity of bull tormenting. Excuse in past was the meat fed the poor - what is the excuse now?
Ever read Ernest Hemingway? Maybe #1 can only read little words.

Does a bull have a worse or better life than a bullock that's raised in order that it may become a meat patty in a Mickydees?

Most sports which result in the injury of an animal are cruel. Fishing is one notable exception. The sad thing is that those humans that take pleasure in blood sport do so purely because they delight in the suffering of an animal. They wouldn't enjoy it if it was a robot animal. For them, it is necessary for the animal to suffer for any enjoyment to be derived. A robot animal wouldn't suffer.

With that said, I am an omnivore, however, do animals have to suffer in order for me to eat well? No. Animals raised in healthy, clean and stress free environments are testament to this fact - they taste much better. Case in point; the wagyu beef of Japan - the animals are fed the highest possible quality grain, provided beer to drink, massaged and enjoy classical music. All of this contributes to the best cut of beef known to man.

Let's learn from this. Animals are there not to entertain us, but to sustain us. They have as much right to a pain free life as every one of us.

She will be locked-up by the Spanish Police, and flung into a cell, not all have the tolerance like the UK.

*1 first of all get a job! You seem to have time to offer comment at any time of day or night. You have a quite unbelievable range of ridiculous opinions on all manner of news items and as usual your views here evince complete ignorance and understanding of the real issues. No right minded person could think that running a bull through for so called sport, in a bullring or elsewhere, is acceptable. The article rightly highlights the noble efforts of a young lady whose principals are clearly in a league far beyond your limited comprehension. Please stop boring readers with inane drivel and allow reasonable bloggers to promote real discussion.

To say that bullfighting is only for tourists is just plain not true. Bullfighting is huge in Spain especially in the south around Madrid and Andalucia where it comes from. Bullfighters are massive celebrities and are always on the T.V. and in gossip mags and have the same kind of status as footballers. The reason it's not big in Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia is not because they think it is cruel or barbaric but because they see it as 'Spanish' and as they are Catalans they want nothing to do with it - they hate Flamenco as well.
Personally I fail to see how an old bull being hacked to death by a guy in pink tights can be considered a sport. If you ask me it's just sad and sorry spectacle that should have been banned years ago.

You see, most of you halfwits are missing the point - Spain and Political Correctness just don't mix, THANK GOD!!! Otherwise we'd end up like the ludicrous USA, UK and all the other McDonald's-loving traditionalless countries.
I won't bother watching out for this dumb loony when I watch the San Fermines, besides, she won't get anywhere near the front line of "San Ferminers".
Viva España!!

Good luck to Joanne and her fellow protesters. Killing animals for sport is not acceptable.

#3. I think you will find that there are many women enjoy watching these poor animals slaughtered and many women in Spain who idolise the butchers.

The naked protest at the beginning of the festival has been going on for many years and is attended by hundreds of people.

She is not doing anything original or groundbreaking and certainly won't stand out anywhere.

The running of the bulls goes on for 7 days and is much more historic and tradition bound, than just killing bulls

Here we go again, the usual uninformed tripe roled out about the corrida. Yes, there is cruelty but it is NOT sport, there is NO contest. Too many people comment via their emotions and feelings without any real knowledge of the subject. To suggest that the bulls have stuff rubbed into their eyes for example is rubbish. A toro with defective vision is in fact a matador's nightmare, since it's attempts to gore and chop with it's horns will be entirely unpredictable. Senorita Simm and others like her should leave other peoples to their own customs.
